If spider silk is so strong, why don't we use it to make
things like bulletproof vests?
Why don't they just get silk from spiders?

Are mute swans really mute?
No. Mute swans ARE quiet birds, but not really mute. They
can hiss, snort, and even trumpet when they really need to.
Is it true that spider silk is stronger than steel?
Spider silk is remarkable stuff. It's one of the strongest
fibers found in nature, and it IS indeed stronger than steel
cable. It's even stronger than Kevlar, the material used to
make bullet-proof vests.

------------------------------------
As Ye Give, So Shall Ye Receive
At the 1994 annual awards dinner given for Forensic Science,
AAFS president Dr. Don Harper Mills astounded his audience
with the legal complications of a bizarre death. Here is the
story:
On March 23, 1994, the medical examiner viewed the body of
Ronald Opus and concluded that he died from a shotgun wound
to the head. The decedent had jumped from the top of a
ten-story building intending to commit suicide.
He left a note to that effect indicating his despondency. As
he fell past the ninth floor, his life was interrupted by a
shotgun blast passing through a window, which killed him
instantly. Neither the shooter nor the decedent was aware
that a safety net had been installed just below at the
eighth floor level to protect some building workers and that
Ronald Opus would not have been able to complete his suicide
the way he had planned.
Ordinarily, Dr. Mills continued, "a person who sets out to
commit suicide and ultimately succeeds, even though the
mechanism might not be what he intended" is still defined as
committing suicide. Mr. Opus was shot on the way to certain
death nine stories below at street level, but his suicide
attempt probably would not have been successful because of
the safety net. This caused the medical examiner to feel
that he had a homicide on his hands.
The room on the ninth floor from whence the shotgun blast
emanated was occupied by an elderly man and his wife. They
were arguing vigorously, and he was threatening her with a
shotgun. The man was so upset that when he pulled the
trigger he completely missed his wife and the pellets went
through the window striking Mr. Opus.
When one intends to kill subject A, but kills subject B in
the attempt, one is guilty of the murder of subject B. When
confronted with the murder charge, the old man and his wife
were both adamant. They both said they thought the shotgun
was unloaded. The old man said it was his long standing
habit to threaten his wife with the unloaded shotgun. He had
no intention to murder her. Therefore the killing of Mr.
Opus appeared to be an accident, that is, the gun had been
accidentally loaded.
The continuing investigation turned up a witness who saw the
old couple's son loading the shotgun about six weeks prior
to the fatal accident. It transpired that the old lady had
cut off her son's financial support and the son, knowing the
propensity of his father to use the shotgun threateningly,
loaded the gun with the expectation that his father would
shoot his mother.
The case now becomes one of murder on the part of the son
for the death of Ronald Opus.
Now comes the exquisite twist. Further investigation
revealed that the son was in fact Ronald Opus. He had become
increasingly despondent over both the loss of his financial
support and the failure of his attempt to engineer his
mother's murder. This led him to jump off the ten-story
building on March 23rd, only to be killed by a shotgun blast
passing through the ninth-story window. The son had actually
murdered himself, so the medical examiner closed the case as
a suicide.
It seems that if your intentions are evil then one way or
another the brunt of them will be felt by you.
Isn't that interesting. It works the other way around, too.
If your intentions are good in the midst of confusion and
chaos, somehow you will enjoy the fruit of your intentions.
Is it any wonder we are constantly admonished to never,
never, never quit?
What both this short story and our admonishers know is the
LAW "As ye give, so shall ye receive."
Wherever one goes they will, sooner or later, come face to
face with this truth. Those who take it to heart and act
upon it, with the deep knowing in their heart, will find
they become what they think about all day long.
As we continue to think we are successful; as we continue to
know we are accepted; as we continue to believe we can do it
- then so shall it be.
The introductory story appears completely bizarre, yet, is
there anyone who can say that the final result was not a
product of a man's thinking? No matter how bizarre the way
the results will arrive.
Man has the habit of saying "If I do this, then I can
determine the result and the method" Not so. The law will
determine the result, but the method may be a complete
surprise.
That is why, when you KNOW you are financially successful,
you should be gracious in accepting financial gifts. It is
not your business to spell out the exact means in which the
law will function. It is only your business to practice the
law and the results will come.

A Quick Lesson On Sinuses
Your sinuses are hollow air-filled spaces within the
bones of your face, behind and above your nose.
Sinus means a cavity or hollow, but we see them as
part of our breathing apparatus The lining of the
sinuses produces a soft gel-like fluid called mucous,
and tiny hairs, called cilia.
What is its function?
The mucous and cilia humidify and warm the air you
breathe, aid your sense of smell, and improve the
sound of your voice. There is a constant sweeping
by theses cilia of mucus out of your sinuses and into
your nose and throat through small openings which
cleans and moisturises your nasal passages.
Why is it a problem when the sinuses don't
function properly?
When the sinus linings become infected, usually due
to viruses or bacteria, they may swell, causing an
obstruction and interfering with normal drainage of
mucus. Infection causes swelling, which makes it
even harder for your sinuses to drain, causing
pressure pain headache fever, and local tenderness.
Things you can do to help yourself.
Drink plenty of liquids to help dilute the secretions.
Have you ever "steamed" your face? It feels so good.
A quick method is to fill a sink with very nice warm
water, gently put your head over the waves of steamy
warm water, and place a towel over you and the sink.
Inhale a couple of times, but don't prolong it. Just
feel the warm breeze on your face. Applying warm
facial packs work, too. Be careful not to scald yourself.
Avoid bending over with your head down. This can
cause more pain and pressure.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure

Come suppertime Kenyata and Sonora rolled out
a feast. Just like all households around the
world, when company was present they rolled out
their best. The meal consisted of a meat that was
hung over the fire on a spit. Beside the meat was
a pot filled with local vegetables and roots.
Additionally there was fruit and raw vegetables
prepared. The meal was terrific. It was not only
delicious but seemed to have almost a spiritual
wellness to it. The kids absorbed the food and the
friendship.
"Well, I guess it's time kids!" Sam knew the
two teens wanted to get home to show their parents
their graduation into higher law.
"I'll tell you what. Why don't you two go on
ahead and I'll stay here for about an hour. That
way you will have private time with your folks."
"Thanks Grandpa. Thanks Mrs Kenyata and Miss
Sonora for the wonderful supper. We will not
forget this day. If you don't mind we will leave
now but we will be back." AliAnn was saying
goodbye.
"Thanks for coming you two. Say hi to your Mom
and Dad, and your Grandma."
"We will Mrs. Kenyata. Thank you."
With that Sammy and AliAnn closed their eyes,
envisioned themselves back in the village at their
Mom and Dads hut, knowing they were there. They
vanished to the eyes of their friends in Africa
and reappeared at home.
One look and their Mother knew. She had been
working over the fire doing something when she
noticed the kids walking up to her. She
immediately let out a cry - OOOOhhh! Eloise ran up
to her children and gave each of them a hug like
she would never see them again. She gave them the
traditional whisper "Welcome" in their ears.
Eloise was in tears. She was so happy she
could hardly contain herself. Her children, the
fruit of her loins, had now graduated into living
by higher law.
She called Mazunta, not out loud but with her
mind. She made sure he knew it was urgent. He was
down on the beach with some of the men. He stopped
what he was doing and came running.
He didn't even get home before he knew what
had happened. He came running up to his kids and
gave each of them a hug and "Welcome".
He looked at Eloise. She had been crying.
"Bueno", that was his nickname for his wife, "this
is a great day. Let's celebrate. I'll tell the
village.
"Wait a minute! Where is your Grandfather?"
"He'll be along shortly Mom. He wanted us to
have this time together. He knew what it would be
like and he knew it was private."
"Come, kids, sit down. Tell us about it."
The kids relayed the story of the lioness
attacking them and the need for them to make
decisions in a hurry. They pointed out how they
knew, as boy and girl, they could do nothing with
human knowledge. They instantly knew the only
thing they could do was to react with higher law,
believing. "If it wasn't for having Midnight here
in the village we might have been scared, Mom. But
this was just another big cat and while it was on
the attack we knew we loved it and that it would
not hurt us. But somehow, something clicked,
inside each of us. We just somehow put to work all
you had taught us. It just seemed the natural
thing to do. So we had no fear we just saw things
immediately, the way we wanted them to be. It all
seemed so simple."
"They were simple, AliAnn, because of your
training. I am glad you took the final step. You
too, Sammy. Your Granddad is a wise man. He knew
that was all you needed to cross through the veil
of simplicity. Welcome to the world of higher
law."
"I and your Mother are very proud of you kids.
I am glad you reacted the way you did. Now you can
serve and you will find that rewarding."
"Dad, how come you and Mom didn't tell us
about the work you did with Miguele and with
Romano, Riata and Oomano?"
"Because, son, it was not important to you. It
was only important to them. We have no need to
tell you so you will think well of us. Only if it
served you or your education would we have relayed
the story to you."
"Hi you two. Oh my!" A tear came to Alewka's
eyes. She was approaching from the guest hut and
knew immediately what had happened. She quietly
came up to AliAnn and hugged her. "Welcome". And
then to Sammy, "Welcome."
"Thank you Grandma. We just needed a push in
the right direction. Grandpa set up the scene. It
all happened so quick."
"Where is your Grandpa?"
"He ..."
"I'm right here. What's all the fuss?" Sam had
quietly slipped in behind Alewka.
"Oh, Dad!" Eloise came running up to him and
hugged and kissed him. "Thank you." She lay in his
arms. My, he loved his daughter.
Mazunta came over and took Sam's hand. "Thank
you, Dad. This was a bit of a surprise."
Alewka came over and just took his arm and
hugged it. She knew her man and she loved him with
every fiber in her being.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Take the Cake: Where did we get the expression "that takes
the cake"?
From the competitive cakewalk. This dance originated among
the Negroes of the South - and got its name from the fact
that at barbecues, picnics, and box suppers a strutting
contest was held among the men. The man who cut the best
capers in "strutting his stuff" was given his choice of
cakes - and along with the cake went the girl who baked it
as a partner for the meal.

three other men of the cloth swapped their clerical garb for

several really horrible shots, their caddy asked, "You guys
wouldn't be priests by any chance?"
"Actually, yes, we are," one cleric replied. "How did you
know?"
"Easy," said the caddy, "I've never seen such bad golf and
such clean language!"

REMEMBER! - IF YOU SEE IT IN thePEBBLE - IT IS SO!
I am always fascinated how we all seem to be floating from
one condition to another in this spaceship earth, almost as if
we were each in a capsule of our own. What makes us think
anything is any different when we die, is only an ignorance
founded on our lack of effort trying to get out of our capsule.
