TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

How is the word "cuckold" related to parasitic birds?

Could a former US president, like Bill Clinton, ever serve
in the future as vice-president?

But what about a former president who DIDN'T serve the
maximum term as president?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Will the other birds actually raise the intruder baby birds?

In some cases, yes. It doesn't even have to be the same
species. Cowbirds are notorious for laying their eggs in the
nests of birds of other species, and the other species
sometimes do feed and care for the cowbird babies. Not in
all cases, though. Sometimes the other birds will abandon
the nest with the cowbird eggs or destroy the eggs.
Sometimes, too, the foster parents will TRY to raise the
baby cowbirds, but just can't do it. Imagine being a
hummingbird or hawk asked to foster cowbirds! And cowbirds
DO leave their eggs with hummingbirds and hawks. In fact,
the cowbird has been recorded leaving its eggs with almost
150 different species of bird.

Do parasitic birds get along with foster siblings?

SOME parasitic birds, such as the cuckoo, make sure to
destroy the eggs already in the other birds' nest, so there
ARE no foster siblings. But cowbirds often leave the other
eggs there. It's a good strategy. Researchers recently
discovered that cowbirds who grow up with foster siblings
get more food and thrive better than those who are the only
bird in the nest. It may be that with more mouths to feed,
including their OWN young, foster parent birds work harder
to provide food

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW!™

Just a Little Willingness to Love...

What is love? A ticklish sensation around the heart that
can't be scratched? Something I earn when I do things right?
Something I give to get something back? My definition is
that love is a willingness to choose to see and respond to
the best in another person, even when they are not
experiencing or expressing it themselves at the moment. This
gives you the opportunity to be loving, no matter what the
other is doing! It also requires that you decide to give up
petty (and not-so-petty) judgments of others and replace
that with the willingness to see them in their best light.
Quite a tall order!

Now, how do you recognize love in your life? Do you have a
well-defined way of recognizing love coming to you? Is it
"it has to look, sound, feel like this or it isn't love"?
Or, are you open to seeing, hearing and feeling love in many
forms? You can miss a lot of love in your life if you have a
narrow, restricting perception of which form is acceptable
to you.

How do you express love in your life? Familiar quotes worthy
of bringing into application are "Work is love made
visible." "Works, not words, are proof of love." and
"Service is nothing more than love in work clothes."
Consider your expressions of love. Do your words match your
actions? Do you say you'll do something for another but
"forget" regularly? Are you willing to match your walk with
your talk? It seems to me to be a waste of energy to spend
much valuable time talking about what I'm going to do, or
what I think I should do, when I could be using that time
for doing it!

Love also looks a lot like time. When we say we love
someone, or, for that matter, that we love to do something,
the proof is often in the time we spend with the person or
the time we spend doing the activity, isn't it? When I was
seeing many couples in my counselling practice, I would
often hear the pain as one partner expressed their
loneliness, saying, "You do not spend time with me." The
demonstration of love means spending time with those you say
you love, doesn't it? We've all seen or heard stories about
parents who were too busy and missed their children's
childhoods. Regretting it later is not nearly as effective
as doing it now!

Remember, too, that you cannot give a gift you do not have.
Be loving to yourself. Spend time with yourself. Know what
you enjoy and do it! It is also important to have good
communication skills so that you can communicate to others
clearly when you think they are being unloving to you. I
think it is unloving to allow others to be unloving to you.
We are responsible for teaching people how to treat us! If
you do not say anything, you are telling them it is all
right with you.

IMPORTANT: If love makes the world go round, we'd better do
our bit because the world is turning at 2,000 miles per
hour, and we'd get quite a jolt if it stopped.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

Meniere's Syndrome

"Meniere's" is a condition affecting the inner ear.
Although we don't have a specific cause for Meniere's,
we do recognise that the major symptoms are very
debilitating. These are vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing
fluctuation, and pressure or fullness in the ear.

In a healthy ear, a message is triggered from the
inner ear to the brain, letting the brain know that
there is some sort of imbalance. The brain sends
a return message asking the inner ears' nerve
cells to correct this imbalance.

Our cells automatically carry out this message or
command. It is our body's intention to be "in balance"
at all times, so it adjusts for any differences.

In Meniere's, these filtration and excretion activities
seem to be hindered or impaired. So any message
is either not going to be received correctly nor will
it be interpreted and returned appropriately
(A simplistic interpretation.)

Although it can be troublesome, Meniere's is not
something that's contagious and it isn't fatal.

Meniere's disease usually occurs in only one ear. It
affects both ears in only about 30% of patients.
The major symptoms that cause most of the difficulty
are characterized by abnormal sensation of movement
(vertigo), loss of hearing, and noises or ringing (tinnitus)
in one or both ears.

This condition has an affect on the entire family. Not
only does the person have the attack, but the family
also has to tiptoe around and be very quiet. Frequently
they are speaking to a person that can't hear them very
well, either one or both ears. It's very frustrating and
tiring. Visit http://www.menieres-disease.ca

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to
http://www.the-pebble.com OR order yours from
your favorite bookstore. ISBN # 1-4137-4723-X

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

On shore Mazunta raised his hands to command
attention. The crowd hushed. "From this day this
village shall all live by higher law. As your
children walked out onto the water, Mr. Sam Henry
silently removed from each of you all impediment
to living as we do. For those who wish to, I
recommend you listen to your children for they
will show you the way. They will not push you nor
require you do so. They will permit you to lead
the way, yet let it be known all can do this. From
this day some of the activities in this village
will change. Please accept them as being a natural
part of life. Living by higher law asks of each of
us that we aid mankind in his assorted travails.
Your children are now eligible to do that work and
will be asked. Let them do this." He lowered his
hands.

The crowd milled around him and around all the
older ones who had lived in the village for some
time, practicing higher law. David, Pam, Boolanga,
Karmuz, Eloise, Mazunta, Sam, Alewka, Ben and
Helen were all kept busy answering questions. The
village was alive with curiosity. None had
witnessed such occurrences as they had today.
Living by higher law was something "others" did.
Now, however, it was within their own lodges.
Their own children were living examples of the
law.

The questioning went on for hours. This event
today had suddenly awakened the curiosity of the
older ones. To see one child do this would have
allowed them to carry on with their thinking
higher law was for others. But to see all the
children, even the little ones, use higher law,
and that some of those standing out on the water
lived within their own huts, brought the message
home solidly.

Higher law was the subject for the rest of the
day and night. Around the evening fire there was
non-stop talk about the affairs of the day. The
children had not only walked on water but they had
traveled by using higher law, albeit a very short
distance.

The evening fire was abuzz with conversations.
None of those who had lived by higher law were
free from the questioning. All were keen in their
thinking and queries. Mazunta knew that tomorrow
there would be many more to cross over the veil of
simplicity.

He rose and raised his hands. "Tomorrow the
children and I will do some traveling. They will
see many things and will learn to control their
thinking with such precision that they may come
and go at will. For the rest of you there are
others here who can work with you. Feel free to
demand their time. They want to spend it with
you."

That was a true statement. Sam and Alewka had
long been coming to this village and appreciated
the hospitality, as had Ben and Helen Striker.
Those visitors were one thing but there were also
those who now lived here, such as David and Pam
Wiley, whose children were among those who
graduated this day.

"One word of caution. The way we have lived
our lives in this village have made this village
strong. Even though we are able to do things
different we will lose much if we do not maintain
our camaraderie. While I know you know this, it is
wise to be aware the evening fires are still a
vital part of our life and should remain so."

A cheer went up. The older members of the
community did not want things to change so much
they barely recognized life in the village any
more.

It was Mazunta's way of letting them know life
still goes on in spite of ones advanced abilities.

Sam Henry was finally able to meet up with
Mazunta. "Well, Maz, this has been some day!"

"You ought to know, Sam Henry. You are the one
who started it all. Thank you, by the way, for
taking AliAnn and Sammy to Africa and causing
their decision point. We were all becoming
lethargic here and failed to recognize the kids
were ready. Yes, Sam, this had been some kind of a
day. I am glad you stimulated it. I think I will
take the kids to the monastery high in the Andes,
then over to visit Riata, then to Africa and then
back here, tomorrow. Would you like to come?"

"Sure, Maz. That would be great. We can show
the kids many things. All will be well."

AliAnn came up to Sam and Maz. "Well, what are
my two favorite men up to now. It looks like you
are scheming. Oh! I know. Wow! Now you won't be
able to get away with anything will you?" AliAnn
just realized she could witness thoughts as they
passed through the minds of others.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Quaker: How did the "quakers" get that name?

George Fox, the founder of the Society of Friends, in his
speeches admonished the magistrates of England and told them
they should "quake" at the word of the Lord. the term
"Quakers" comes from this phrase - and was devised by
Justice Bennet, a magistrate of Derby.

HA! HA! HA!

Hans Grapje was raised in a Catholic school in The Hague
and, as a young man, aspired to become a priest, but was
drafted into the Army during WWII and spent two years
co-piloting B17s until his aircraft was shot down in 1943
and he lost his left arm.

Captain Grapje spent the rest of the war as a chaplain,
giving spiritual aid to soldiers, both Allied and enemy.
After the war, he became a priest, serving as a missionary
in Africa, piloting his own plane (in spite of his handicap)
to villages across the continent.

In 1997, Father Grapje was serving in Zimbabwe when an
explosion in a silver mine caused a cave-in. Archbishop
Grapje went down into the mine to administer last rites to
those too severely injured to move. Another shaft collapsed,
and he was buried for three days, suffering multiple
injuries, including the loss of his right eye.

The high silver content in the mine's air gave him purpura,
a life-long condition characterized by purplish skin
blotches.

Although Cardinal Grapje devoted his life to the service of
God as a scholar, mentor, and holy man, church leaders
agree: he will never ascend to the Papacy.

No one wants a one-eyed, one-armed, flying purple Papal
leader.
