Isn't buying and selling ivory illegal?

How can you tell the difference between ivory from different

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

As we head into October: Why is October named the eighth
month ("octo" being Latin for "eight") when it's actually
the TENTH month?

Because once upon a time, back in the ancient days of Rome,
October WAS the eighth month. That was before the calendar
was changed and months were added (the original Roman
calendar had only TEN months).

What are the four organic gemstones?

Jewelers recognize four organic substances as gemstones:
ivory, pearl, amber, and coral. Other precious and
semi-precious gems are considered minerals.

SBC sees little threat from Skype, Net calling
by Justin Hyde

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - SBC Communications Inc. sees little
challenge to its traditional telephone business from
services such as Skype that offer free phone calls over the
Internet, SBC's chief financial officer said on Thursday.

"I don't see it as a significant threat," SBC CFO Rick
Lindner said in an interview with Reuters. "The fears of
what may happen there are overblown."

In recent weeks several tech giants, notably Google Inc. and
Yahoo! Inc., have either launched or bolstered services
offering free voice calls between computers.

Skype, which also allows users to place relatively cheap
calls to regular telephone numbers worldwide, agreed last
month to be bought by Internet auction site eBay Inc. for up
to $4.1 billion.

That deal raised the specter of a well-funded Internet
calling service taking on the U.S. "Baby Bells," such as SBC
and Verizon Communications Inc.. Several analysts have
contended that while eBay bought Skype to increase Web-based
commerce, it would eventually look to expand Skype further
into telecommunications.

EBay estimates Skype will produce revenues of $60 million in
2005 and more than $200 million in 2006. EBay Chairman and
Chief Executive Meg Whitman told analysts on Wednesday that
Skype would make its money from add-on services, not phone
calls.

"It is very clear that voice communications is moving on to
the Internet," Whitman said. "In the end, the price that
anyone can provide for voice transmission on the Net will
trend toward zero."

Skype had 57 million registered users worldwide as of
September, not all of whom frequent the service regularly.
According to Nielsen/NetRatings, 1.85 million U.S. users
either went to Skype's home page or used the software last
month.

But Lindner said while some "techies" might want to "scour
the Internet and buy applications and services from a number
of different providers," the mass market of customers will
prefer to buy voice, video and data services from one
company on one bill.

"Why has WalMart been successful in areas like groceries?
It's because its convenient for people to go to one location
and buy everything," he said.

Lindner also said consumers will prefer to send calls over
reliable networks. Most U.S. telephone network equipment is
designed to go offline for no more than a few minutes per
year.

"That's a big difference from simply relying on the public
Internet to handle your communication needs," Lindner said.

SBC said on Thursday that it ended the quarter with 50.2
million traditional telephone lines, a 5.1 percent decrease
from a year earlier, driven by a loss of 643,000 wholesale
lines.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

Fibromyalgia
A very real and debilitating, but invisible condition

This medical condition causes chronic pain and
tenderness in muscle tissue. It occurs on both sides
of the body and above and below the waist. There
are 19 "trigger points" such as lower back, neck
shoulders, arms, hands knees, hips, thighs, legs,
and feet, to name some. From these, you can see
that any movement and activity would cause someone
to want to stay still. By itself, Fibromyalgia does not
cause physical harm. Rather, because its pain is so
constant and severe, it prevents the person from
participating in many daily activities…and there is
no known cause. The treatment is mainly rest, easy
exercising such as walking a few yards or blocks
daily, biking, or swimming. Painkillers such as
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are available,
but they are also problematic. They increase the free
radical load, which in turn has to be cleared up or
neutralized with antioxidants.

Stress is one of the biggest problems as it creates
tension, which tightens up the body, so the pain and
discomfort are increased. Many people now end up
on disability because they cannot work. In many cases,
relationships fall apart. I know of several people who
could easily sleep weeks at a time if they allowed
themselves to do that. However, they, like most of us
feel they have a responsibility to live some sort of
normal life, and in order to do that, push themselves
to above their level of ability. If you are suffering from
Fibromyalgia, please know that research is showing
excellent results with the use of high quality grade
nutritional supplements. With significantly less pain
and fewer muscle spasms, Fibromyalgia sufferers' energy
level rises. What is so wonderful to watch is the hope
and planning for a "back to doing things" attitude: the
positive attitude that bounces back. Life gets better!

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

Sam and Maz had a short talk and decided to stay here
overnight and the next day. They would leave for Africa
tomorrow around noon and that would get them to Sonora's
right around six in the morning. That would give the kids
the whole day there and then leaving there at six at night
would get them home just before the village usually woke up.

Maz told the kids he thought it would be a good idea to
stay the night. A cheer went up, not only from the kids that
came with him but from the China orphanage kids as well.
They were all becoming friends and getting to know one
another as kids do.

That evening there was a fire held out back of the
covered area of the orphanage. Riata set up the ritual of
fire here, much as the villagers did where the visiting kids
lived. It was a way of developing a closeness amongst the
kids.

All the young broke off into natural groups founded on
either sex, age or common interest. They were all busy
talking with each other. There was an enormous interest from
the kids at the orphanage about living by higher law. They
were keen.

The adults all sat together and themselves enjoyed each
other. They had not seen one another for a while and the
visitors brought news plus a refreshing newness to the
evening.

As you might expect the fire went long into the night.
No one wanted the evening to end. Riata and other adults
placed no limits on bedtimes. There was simply too little
opportunity for the kids to get together like this. The
adults wanted the kids to enjoy each other as much as
possible.

Sam placed the last log on the fire around three in the
morning. Some of the kids had already gone in to lay down
for sleep. The older ones stayed around the fire and talked.
This night forged many a relationship and friendship.

Near four in the morning the fire wrapped up and
everyone went to bed.

Sam and Maz slept right where they were, around the
fire. The kids they brought with them were mostly inside,
sharing space with newfound friends.

It was near noon before there was much activity around.
The late night took its toll on the kids, yet none would
have changed it. Kids just seem to float from one situation
to the other. That the day was half gone when they awoke,
was a subject that never even entered their minds. Each
lived in the moment. That might be a good lesson for
everyone.

With groggy heads, sleepy eyes and stumbling steps they
all managed to get some breakfast in them. Again they broke
off into groups as they did the night before. They were
still talking and higher law was still the subject of
interest.

Sam and Maz knew it would not be long before many from
the orphanage would be living by higher law. Each smiled to
the other. It was truly amazing how the kids taught one
another.

Riata and the other adults smiled, too. They all knew
what was going on and where they had to make a correction
they did.

Getting the kids mustered to leave was going to be a
chore, but for higher law. They had all grown so close none
wanted to leave. Yet leave they must.

"Okay guys, its near two o'clock. I think we should be
off." Mazunta sent this thought to everyone of his charges.
Each stopped what they were doing and looked at him from
where they were. They were reluctant to stop and leave but
they knew the time had come.

Slowly, ever so slowly they gathered to be with Mazunta
and Sam. It was decided that Sam would leave first and the
others could focus on him, to join him. Sam said his good
byes and gave hugs and kisses where he wanted. This time a
hug and a kiss was also given to Tlang. She was surprised
and pleased.

Sam was off. Mazunta said his good byes and the kids
were busy doing likewise. In a matter of five minutes the
goodbye process was finished and the visitors were gone.

Sam had touched down on the hill behind his friends hut.
He sent out a strong thought unto all the kids. They "homed"
in on that and all arrived in a matter of minutes.

Standing on the hill looking down upon the herds was an
awesome sight for anyone at anytime, even every time. The
kids had not ever seen such a sight. They were in awe,
silent, impressed. None spoke for a long time. They just
absorbed the scene in front of them. They were entranced by
what they saw.

"Well, hello everybody!" Hemno and Sonora knew the kids
had arrived and had walked around the hut to welcome the
visitors.

"Kids, this is Sonora and this is Hemno. This is their
home. They are good friends of mine and have fed me many a
meal." Sam introduced the two young people to the group.

"Welcome to higher law you guys and welcome here, to
Africa, and our home. What would you like to do?" Sonora
inquired, although she already knew the answer. It was the
same for everyone. They all wanted to do down the hill to
see the herds, up close.

That is precisely the answer Sonora received from all
the kids in front of her. "Good, let's go!" Without further
talk Sonora simply vanished.

The kids were momentarily confused until Hemno spoke.
"Well, are you guys coming?" And then he vanished to their
eyes.

Young Sammy was the first to catch on. "Come on guys.
They are already down the hill. Let's go." Then he
disappeared. Within seconds the entire group was down the
hill.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Laconic: Where does the word "laconic" come from?

From "Laconia" - the general name for Spartan territory. The
Spartans were noted for their brusque speech - the best
example of it being their reply when Philip of Macedon wrote
to their magistrates: "If I enter Laconia I will level
Lacedaemon to the ground." The Spartans' reply was: "If."

I live in awe of how the mind brings circumstances into
