thePEBBLE - 10/29/05 - Not Always What You Think!
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
A typical, obviously American, community. Two young people
given an opportunity for an a adventure with an attainable
financial reward. Their adventure into the inkonwn, not
restrained by dogmatic rules or community restraints, leads
them to resources that change no only the two adventurers'
attitudes, but attitudes of others.
The reader will either come away with a a feeling of
wonderment or question the writer's declared source, his
Maker, for the content.
I was not envious of the characters' adventures but enjoyed
the book as it refreshed the wonderment I had as a youth and
now as a practical adult, to "think outside the box" about
powers that are within us.

Honourable Joe Clark, the former Prime Minister of Canada
It took me back to my youth and now inspires me to "think

What were early swimsuits made out of?
Imagine swimming in a wool swimsuit that, when wet, could
weigh twenty pounds! Yikes. But that's what the first
"streamlined" swimsuits of the early 1900s were like.
Is it true that you shouldn't swim for at least an hour
after eating?
Most of us learned as children that we shouldn't go back
into the pool after eating for at least an hour or else we'd
risk stomach cramps and drown! Actually, though, that's not
true. According to the American Red Cross, there is no
scientific evidence proving that swimming and eating
produces cramps. Muscle cramps are caused by fatigue and
chilling and have nothing to do with digestion or with the
body focusing its energies on digestion and drawing blood
away from the muscles. In fact, long-distance swimmers will
actually eat while in the water to avoid fatigue (and, thus,
muscle cramps).

Not Always What You Think!
A woman walks into a theater and seats herself in the back
row. There is no one else there yet and she's just getting
settled when she notices a shadow in the front. She gets up
to investigate and finds a man laying down across five of
the seats in the front row. "Sir," she says to him. "Not to
be rude or anything, but it's not fair of you to take up
five seats like that. When more people arrive, they're going
to need them!"
"Oh." he replies.
"I'll ask you again to move! You don't need five seats!" the
woman persists.
"Oh.... he replies again.
"Well that does it! I'm fetching the manager!" she snaps,
and storms out of the theater. A moment later she returns
with a manager in tow and points accusingly at the man who
has refused to move.
"Sir, this lady has lodged a complaint and I'm afraid I have
to agree. There is no reason for you to take up five seats."
the manager informs him.
"Oh......" the man replies again, not moving.
"Just where do you come from that you think you can take up
five seats anyway?" the manager inquires.
".....the balcony......"
You see, things may not always be what they seem. That is
true of things in your life, too. I don't know how many
times I thought I had failed, only to find, surprisingly, I
didn't.
Life is like that. We are all taught as youth that, in our
minds, we do not always mean what we say. We grow up that
way, not having had proper instruction as to how important
it is to stick to our word, or our ideas, for our sake only.
The result is we grow up with minds that don't believe us
when we get older. Our minds are much too used to hearing
one thing and then we go do another. So we get surprised
when we succeed at something when we thought we were
failing.
Worse, we too often set our goals, read them every day, but
deep down inside we don't believe we will attain them. We
have been too long schooled in not reaching our goals and
objectives, so we just assume we will fail.
Yet, things are not what they seem. Your mind is just
waiting for you to take a hard objective, set your sights,
and go for it until you reach it - accepting NO ALTERNATIVE.
Once you do this you will find nearly everything else in
your life happening as you say, also. The reason is you have
shown your mind you mean business. You have shown your mind
you will not stop until you reach what you have decided
upon.
That is why the admonition to "keep on keepin' on". Like
Churchill said, "Never, Never, Never quit."
Regardless what you see, you must remember YOU set your
goals as something reasonable, honest and worthy. There is
nothing wrong with your goals. You simply haven't found the
right road yet. Someone once told me "There are many roads
that lead to the town square. If one is blocked, use
another. You will get there."
Don't like where you are in your plans?

Consent Forms
So you are going to have some sort of medical procedure and
they require you "to sign a consent form".
Please know your rights and responsibilities with this very
important document. A signed consent form is a legal
document. It is not up for dispute after everything is done
and you are not happy with the results. You sign it and you
agree to the results.
You don't sign it and you don't get the procedure. Simple
and clear!
So how can you protect yourself? Understand what you are
agreeing to. Ask. Don't assume you know and don't "trust"
your doctor to do the bet for you. He/ she will, but it's
also your responsibility to understand.
Take notes. Ask what the possible complications and/or side
effects can happen. If you don't know a phrase or sentence,
ask for clarification. For instance, if your doctor says his
success rate is 95%: the HUGE question is: if you are one of
the 5%, can YOU live with the outcome?
The language used will be medical terminology and chances
are you probably won't understand its serious and real
meaning. Just for "interest" I will include some
complications and side effects written on a real consent
application. Could you live with these results?
"This operation results in total loss of hearing in the
operate ear. This operation results in a temporary leak of
cerebrospinal fluid (fluid surrounding the brain). This leak
is always closed prior to the completion of surgery. On
occasion, however, the leak reopens and further surgery may
be necessary to stop it. (Infection??? Meningitis?)
Anesthetic complications are very rare, but can be serious.
You may discuss these with the anesthesiologist if desired."
(My list has several more health challenges for this
particular surgery.)

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------
During the break there was much buzz about what the
young people had said. AliAnn, to be sure, was talked about,
but not only her. The villagers knew they had heard about
things that were new and unique. They knew they had been
treated to an adventure and experience they needed to
absorb, savour, enjoy for a long time. It was their job now
to think on these things the kids had said. They well
realized they had the privilege to live in a special
village.
Slowly, but eventually, they drifted back to their
places at the fire. Mazunta had been right. This fire was
different than all the rest.
Before those who lived by higher law came to this
village the nightly fires were more of a party. Since that
time, love had been added, and the village saw the fires as
the perfect opportunity to develop cohesiveness. They used
the time to learn, to enjoy, to bond. It was not a conscious
thing they planned out. It was a natural evolvement. That
way none felt "pressured". Instead they felt eager and
hungry for knowledge and news.
They were kept eternally safe, for this village was
still known as the village of the big black cat. Midnight
had given them this legacy that would remain with this
village forever. None would dare think of attacking or
harming this village for they never knew where the cat was.
Only white man with his arrogant superiority, would come
here to tell these people what to do and that was avoided
because of the shield placed around the area by those who
lived by higher law. So the village was safe to grow and
develop in any way it wished. It was clear they chose love,
wisdom, doing what their Maker wanted. Here, prosperity was
not measured in money for that was worthless. Prosperity was
measured in happiness, joy, peace. All the rewards that come
from living the way our Maker wants, with no one having a
"personal agenda" meant happiness, joy and peace lived in
this village every day.
The first adult rose to speak. It was a man who came to
the front of the fire circle as had the rest of the
speakers.
"I choose not to go through this experience again. When
our children were away this village sank into the depths of
despair. I was unhappy to a depth of my being I cannot
describe. I am happy our children learned a lot. I am happy
they enjoyed themselves and saw a lot. I am happy they made
new friends in China, yet this village is nothing without
the sound of children laughing, playing, crying, screaming
as they play ball on the beach. This journey presented a
time in the village that we did not expect. We were not
ready for the silence, the inactivity, the absence of all
our loved ones. When our children were missing it took away
our sense of purpose. It created a hole in the village and
in every person in it. There was no reason for us to carry
on. Some think it would be a holiday, being away from our
children. Not so. Our children are the reason for our being.
All we do we do because of our children. When they are not
here it empties us in a way that creates a hole in our
being. That some of the kids left, would be all right, but
when all left it was a disaster. Let us not permit that
again. It taught us all to love the more, and appreciate the
more, our children and what they mean to this village."
The speaker sat down. The mood was again somber. The
villagers well know what he was speaking and they were
remembering. The speaker was right. None of them wanted to
go through that again.
The next speaker was a woman, an elder woman who no
longer had her children at home. She was a grandmother.
"I looked out across the village and I saw forms, empty
shells moving about, but without purpose. These forms were
but shadows of their former selves. I have seen photographs
and I have seen they come from what is called a negative.
When I looked out upon the village it was as if I was
looking at a negative. Only when the children returned did
the photograph take on color and vibrance. To say we were
left with a hole in our hearts is really saying we had lost
the most important thing in our lives.
I am glad all our children now live by higher law, for
it will keep them with solid footing on the ground. It is
good we share these experiences for it is important to the
children they learn of the emotions of those left without
them. It is good they learn of the importance of children in
any setting, not here only. I am sure all Mothers feel the
same. All Fathers would suffer if all children were absent.
Let us not fool ourselves. Any life without children in it
is missing out on the joy, purpose and substance of life. It
may be fine for a woman to say she does not want children,
yet she should have lived in this village when all the
children had left. No, it is unwise not to have children or
to live where no children can be heard, seen, enjoyed. The
landscape becomes as desolate as that in the center of an
old volcano, or that of the moon, when the children have
left."
She sat down. The children could feel the sorrow, the
emptiness, the desperation. Being wholly interested in what
they were doing and where they were going, they had no idea
their absence in this village would cause such a feeling.
They had not yet looked at the role they, as children,
played in the grand scheme of things. Playing their ball
game on the beach didn't leave them much time to think on
such weighty matters either. They were all just doing their
job, being happy, carefree children.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Gag: How did a joke come to be called a "gag"?
The term was originally used by actors to mean an ad-lib
joke thrown in to throw another actor off his lines. The
joke stopped his speech as effectively as a gag.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
HA! HA! HA!
An area pastor tells of his first Sunday in the new parish
and presenting the children's message. Seems the sanctuary
in the new church had some magnificent stained glass
windows, so his message centered on how each of us is called
of God to help make up the whole picture of life (the life
of the community of the faithful). Like the pictures in the
windows, it takes many little panels of glass to make the
whole picture.
And then he said, "You see each one of you is a little
pane." And then pointing to each child, "You're a little
pane. And you're a little pane. And you're a little pane.
And..."
It took a few moments before he realize why everyone was
laughing so hard.
