thePEBBLE - 10/30/05 - Understand Your Audience!

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

A typical, obviously American, community. Two young people
given an opportunity for an a adventure with an attainable
financial reward. Their adventure into the inkonwn, not
restrained by dogmatic rules or community restraints, leads
them to resources that change no only the two adventurers'
attitudes, but attitudes of others.

The reader will either come away with a a feeling of
wonderment or question the writer's declared source, his
Maker, for the content.

I was not envious of the characters' adventures but enjoyed
the book as it refreshed the wonderment I had as a youth and
now as a practical adult, to "think outside the box" about
powers that are within us.

Jerry Harlton

Jerry Harlton was an executive assistant to the Right
Honourable Joe Clark, the former Prime Minister of Canada

It took me back to my youth and now inspires me to "think
outside the box".

TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

What does "Viking" mean?

What made the Viking expansion possible?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

How deep is a fathom?

A fathom is six feet (1.83m), used mainly in the measurement
of marine depths.

In what country did Vikings live?

Actually, Vikings lived in several countries. These
notorious sea raiders and explorers hailed from three
Scandinavian homelands: Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The
Danes made their mark in the British Isles and along the
coastlines of Europe. The Norwegians sailed across the
Atlantic Ocean to reach America. And the Swedes traveled up
Russian rivers to reach Constantinople and the Orient. Just
last month, in September, researchers reported finding a
Viking burial site, with six Viking men and women, in
England. It's the first Viking burial ground found in
Britain.

Understand Your Audience!

Little Mikey got on a bus and sat down next to a man. He
noticed that the man had a strange kind of shirt collar, so
he asked him, "Excuse me, sir, but why do you have your
shirt collar on backwards?"

The man smiled kindly and answered, "I wear this collar
because I am a Father."

Little Mikey thought a second and responded, "Sir, I have a
father, but he wears his collar the other way around. Why do
you wear your collar so differently?"

The priest thought for a minute, and said, "I am the Father
for many,"

Little Mikey quickly answered, "My father, too, is the
father of many. He has four sons, four daughters and many
grandchildren. But he wears his collar like everyone else
does. Why do you wear yours backwards?"

The priest, flustered, said impatiently, "I am the Father
for hundreds and hundreds of people."

Little Mikey sat silently for a long time. As he got up to
leave the bus, he leaned over to the priest and said,
"Mister, maybe you should wear your pants backwards."

"Out of the mouthes of babes" comes to mind as I read the
joke above. Sometimes the world can be so simple it baffles
those of us who are looking for the complex.

Whether we are in internet marketing or not does not matter
at this point. The value of knowing your audience cannot be
measured.

It is clear the Father was talking on the basis his audience
understood who and what he was. That was not the case, as
was later proven.

How many times in our efforts to convince people to take
action, do we make this same mistake? How many of us write
our sales messages, speak our sales messages, prepare our
sales messages, assuming the person we are addressing is
fully knowledgeable about even the basics of out topic?

I have long heard it said that all ones sales messages
should be created to reach a six year old. That includes the
one where you are trying to persuade your nine year old to
run down to the corner to get you a loaf of bread.

That statement does not mean you "talk down" to anyone. It
only means you speak or write so your audience can
understand what you are saying. It is not that they don't
understand your words. It is that they may not understand
your message.

Some of you may have noticed my writing seems to go full
circle. That is to say I usually finish up my articles with
their title. I start out by saying what I want to say and
come right back to the place I started.

That is in emulation of a man I admired. I had several
occasions to listen to him speak. He nearly always confused
me. He would start out with the title of his address and
then he would go off into seemingly unrelated areas. I would
sit there listening and wonder what on earth did this have
to do with his topic. Then, suddenly, in his concluding
remarks he would come back to his topic with a few
concluding remarks that struck his audience like a bullet.
He would somehow wrap up his discussion by bringing everyone
back to his topic in a way that made everything make so much
sense we were in awe.

This man knew his topic, his language, his ability and most
importantly - his audience. His style had impact, not
because it was anything special, but because he knew how to
reach those he was addressing.

It is good advice, try it.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

HIV INFECTION & AIDS
(ACQUIRED IMMUNO-DEFICIENCY SYNDROME)

AIDS is caused by a virus, which slowly destroys a person's
immune system. It is important however, to realize that
there is a lot of encouraging news for these patients.

Most of it is aimed at trying to rebuild their natural
immune system and hopefully slow down this process.

Usually there is a tremendous time lag between the actual
infection occurring with the virus and the point where
clinical signs and symptoms are demonstrated.

This may be as long as 15 years. This is the window of time
when it is very important to build up the person's natural
immune system in the hopes that they can delay becoming ill
from the disease, if in fact they suspect a problem.

Success is now seen in many of these patients who are on
special nutritional supplements, known to boost the immune
system. I have run into a real dilemma in my nursing clinics
and I would like to throw this out for comments. I am now
meeting HIV positive and AIDS patients who are considered
"survivors" and are doing relatively well. The challenge I
see is that because they are managing so well, they are now
back in the workforce, where they could hold positions. BUT
because of the health regulations in various jobs, they are
declined.

As well, many are cut off from their meds and ostracised
from community functions because they no longer fit the
"profile". What drugs they are on, are expensive and they
have no money to cover them. Quite the dilemma and I have no
ideas. From a humanitarian point, this is neither healthy
nor desirable.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

Today they learned much about the interrelationships
between children and adults. Many, going through puberty,
were also learning about the relationships between men and
women, still others were looking at the role they, as a
group, played in the life of the village. Thank goodness for
living by higher law. If not for that these topics would
have been far too deep for them to comprehend.

Life was not difficult in this village. Yet there were
still all these different relationships that had to be
figured out. They were natural conditions but still they had
to be reconciled in each individual. All the children
realized they held a power over the village, yet not more
than if all the adults decided to leave at once. It was not
a power trip anyway. They just wanted to look at how things
work that they may preserve the good things for when they
bring children into the world and would want to teach them.

The next speaker was a male. "You have heard how
terrible life is in a community where the children have been
removed. You have seen how emotionally devastating it is.
Now, let us look at what physical things happen in village
life when the children are removed. Our children haul water
for our cooking and drinking. They haul wood, they run
chores for their parents. They help with the carving of our
trade goods and our canoes. They gather food with their
Mothers, they give hugs and kisses to their Grandparents,
they look upon their parents with awe and reverence. If we
need wood for the evening fire the kids go get it. If we
have to go fishing for food, the kids come and learn, that
they may go alone one day. If we have to get game, the kids
come and observe so they may do it next year. All these
things are practical chores the children of this village do
to help the village. None believe that only the children can
do these things for the adults can too. But it is important
to realize that children contribute measurably to life in
this village. I noticed that while we were on our way to the
fire tonight, my wife gave things to my children so they
could carry them. We just finished having a beverage, most
of which was prepared by our youth.

There is one more thing our youth do for this village.
They keep us young. They keep us on our toes and are always
asking questions about things. They keep us seeking answers
and they make us attend with them on things they are doing.
That keeps a village young and vibrant. The children are not
a necessity, yet they are a gift from our Maker. They are
not a bother, at least not all the time," laughter broke
out, "they are a privilege to each adult in this village.

It is good our children went away for without that
experience we would not have come to really understand how
important it is to have children among us."

With that the man sat. He was cheered. He had nailed the
point right on the head.

Once again the village was abuzz, all sitting around the
fire and talking about the speeches and the content thereof.
A cheer went up for all of this evening. They were cheering
themselves. The adults were bringing their understanding a
little closer to the children and the children were raising
their understanding to that of the adults.

Maz rose. "This night has been a summary of the
education we all received over the last few days. It is
interesting what happens when we share our knowledge and our
feelings. I am certain this village is stronger for the
sharing of knowledge that took place here tonight. Please
continue to think on these matters. They will make this
village healthy.

Now I wish to do something a little more formal. We have
guests with us tonight. They came with us from Africa. Some
of you have met them before, some have not." Turning to
Sonora and Hemno he asked them to rise. "This young woman is
Sonora. This young man is Hemno. They live in Africa just
above the plains your children just told you about. They
have been of much help to us as we move about helping
mankind. Each lives by higher law and each is welcome in
this village." Mazunta walked up to Sonora and Hemno, stood
between them and put his mighty arms around each of them.

There was a hearty, healthy, happy cheer go up from the
village. They had shared their stories and now each was
feeling better. All was well in the village. Life and
enthusiasm were beginning to filter back in. Sonora and
Hemno could never quite figure out what happened but
suddenly they had become the guests of honor. From that time
they were wined and dined. Not one wish do they utter but
it was presented to them within minutes.

This was a night to celebrate. All were home, safe and
sound, plus Mazunta had made room for things important to
them. Each learned a lot and the sharing was a good way to
have everyone in the village learn.

The drummers had kept a steady low volumed cadence going
all night. As the night wore on the villagers were becoming
tired. Maz signaled to the fire tenders not to put any more
wood on the fire. It would be an hour yet before it would
die down enough that folks would begin drifting off to
their homes.

"You know Maz, I think Mom and I will be leaving
tomorrow. I want to show Mom the orphanage in China and we
still wanted to go see Sien's monastery into the hill. Thank
you for your hospitality. We may be gone in the morning when
you wake up. If not we will come over for a morning coffee."
Sam was tired.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Fall Guy: Why do we call a dupe a "fall guy"?

The word "fall" not only means to "stumble" but also to be
"lured" or "entrapped". And so we call a person a "fall guy"
who is entrapped and left to suffer the punishment while the
one who did the actual mischief escapes.
