A typical, obviously American, community. Two young people
given an opportunity for an a adventure with an attainable
financial reward. Their adventure into the inkonwn, not
restrained by dogmatic rules or community restraints, leads
them to resources that change no only the two adventurers'
attitudes, but attitudes of others.

The reader will either come away with a a feeling of
wonderment or question the writer's declared source, his
Maker, for the content.

I was not envious of the characters' adventures but enjoyed
the book as it refreshed the wonderment I had as a youth and
now as a practical adult, to "think outside the box" about
powers that are within us.

Jerry Harlton

Jerry Harlton was an executive assistant to the Right
Honourable Joe Clark, the former Prime Minister of Canada

It took me back to my youth and now inspires me to "think
outside the box".

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What does "Viking" mean?

"Viking" is Norse for "piracy." Recent scholarship, however,
suggests that the Vikings were much more than barbaric
raiders, taking advantage of a vulnerable Europe. The
Norsemen were also skilled craftsmen, shipbuilders, and
poets who actually enriched the European civilizations they
invaded.

What made the Viking expansion possible?

Sails. With sails, the Viking longships could sail at more
than ten knots and appear suddenly on a foreign coast. The
sails the Vikings used were made out of wool.

Anti-Spyware Group Pushes Guidelines
by Wendy Davis

MORE THAN SIX MONTHS AFTER it formed, an anti-spyware
group headed by the Center for Democracy and Technology, the
Anti-Spyware Coalition, released guidelines Thursday
designed to assess how to evaluate spyware and other
potentially unwanted software programs. The group's
guidelines carry no legal weight, but might be influential
with some members--like Aluria and Lavasoft--that
manufacture anti-spyware removal software.

The proposed standards don't spell out whether any
particular product should be classified as harmful, but
instead provide various risk factors--a laundry list of
traits of software programs, with each trait assessed for
its degree of risk.

"The risk factors have general weights (high, medium, and
low) that help show the relative impact to the user," states
the document. "Although all behaviors can be problematic if
unauthorized, certain ones tend to have a greater impact and
are treated with more severity than others."

When programs serve pop-up ads, one of the key indicators of
potential harm is whether the pop-ups "are clearly
attributed to the source program," according to the
guidelines.

The guidelines also look at factors that could indicate
whether consumers have consented to the programs. For
instance, in the case of bundled programs, one factor is
whether consumers have opted-in to receive the bundled
software (considered a high indication of consent) or
whether consumers' only notification about bundled software
came in an end-user license agreement (considered a low
indication of consumer consent).

Similarly, the easier a program is to remove, the more
likely it is that the consumer has consented to the program,
according to the guidelines.

The organization is accepting comments on the guidelines
through Nov. 27.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

The Challenge Of Living With Addictions:
Alcoholism & Other Drugs And Activities

Mosby's dictionary defines addiction as "a compulsive,
uncontrollable dependence on a substance, habit, or
practice, to such a degree that cessation causes severe
emotional, mental, or physiological reaction".

It also defines an addict as someone who has "become
physiologically or psychologically dependent on a chemical
such as alcohol or other drugs to the extent that the normal
social, occupational, and other responsibilities are
disrupted".

They define a codependent as "state or close association
with a person who is dependent or addicted to a potentially
destructive behaviour such as substance abuse, gambling, or
smoking. This codependent is said to facilitate the
behaviour of the dependent one".

This is a favourite concept. I beg to differ. From a nursing
perspective, this is not a helpful definition. I want to
encourage the family members that they are NOT the problem:
nor have they facilitated any behaviors.

They do not force anyone to ingest or smoke, or contribute
to bad habits. In many cases, "money" dictates what happens
in a family unit. My goal is to help the "caregiver" who is
usually a spouse or the children to learn to stand up for
themselves.

It amazes me that we still have these self-esteem problems
despite all the media discussion and education.

So in the caring professions, we need to really speak out
and let people affected by these conditions, not assume the
blame. Rather we should build them up to withstand this
blame and find ways for them to avoid or absent themselves
from the scene.

BUT this doesn't have to be a permanent move. It just gives
time to heal some wounds that are very similar to the
addict's, but are not "sought" by them.

When an addict acts out " emotionally, mentally,
psychologically, or physiologically" or where "the normal
social, occupational, and other responsibilities are
disrupted", we need to step forward with help,
understanding, and practical solutions.

And when this habit is "compulsive, uncontrollable
dependence", we need to be quick about it. The cloak of
secrecy is counter-productive.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

Sam and Alewka did not rise early. They slept in. When
they arose the day was warm and sunny. They meandered over
to Maz's and Eloise's.

"Hi, you two. You still look sleepy eyed." Eloise saw
them coming and had a warm beverage for them.

"We decided to sleep in because of the time zones,
honey. We thought we would leave here around noon or just
after and that way we would arrive in daylight just after
the orphanage has begun their day. Thank you for the drink."

"You are welcome, Mom. When you get there please say hi
to Tom for me. I haven't seen my brothers since Tim and
Sharon's wedding. Oh! Tim and Sharon were here once. Still
that is six months now. I wonder how Tom and Tlang are
making out? Boy that one sure hit him hard. He fell head
over heels in love the moment he saw her."

"Tinkerbell, they are doing fine. I saw them when we had
the kids over there. They are both still infatuated with
each other and do everything together. Your Mom and I are
going to enjoy spending some time with them."

"I'll bet. One day Maz and I will have to go over there
and spend some time. We still have a little work to do here
yet."

"Even though that might be true, with the kids now
living by higher law you are not needed near as much as you
once were. Learn to live with that Eloise, and learn to like
it. The kids are doing and living just as you taught them to
be. Do not be sorry because they no longer need you, be
happy, because that it the goal you worked toward. Besides
its wonderful when you see your children begin to shape
their own lives. Be happy about it."

"Yes, Dad, you've been hinting at that for years and I
have kept it in mind. I know I no longer have babies and I
know they are both doing very well. I also realize that now
they live by higher law they are equal in all respects. No,
I'm pleased. I'm proud of my kids, of my parents, too, for
that matter."

"Wow! Where did that come from?"

"Oh, I don't know. It's just been a while since I told
you I love you. I am a very lucky woman to have had parents
like you. I love you both."

Without hesitation Eloise came over to her Dad and gave
him a big hug and kiss. She did the same to her Mother.

"Thank you honey. I love it when you do that." Sam was
smiling at Eloise.

"Oh, Dad!" She slapped her Father on the arm.

They sat around the small fire pit in front of Maz's and
Eloise's hut. They chatted away for quite some time.

"By the way, where is Maz, and the kids?"

"I think the kids are down on the beach and Maz might be
there too. He wanted to check one of the canoes this
morning. You know him, someone likely has him cornered
wanting to speak with him. He'll talk all day if he thinks
it is of help to his listener."

Sam laughed. "I know, but he knows when and how to shut
up too. I think I'll just saunter down to the beach and see
what's up." With that Sam rose and walked away.

"Well, hello David. How are you this fine day?"

"Hi Sam, I'm fine and you?"

"You know me David, everyday above grass is a good one.
How's Pam and the kids?"

"We're all fine Sam. We're thinking of going up to
Pinehill to see Pam's folks. Now the kids live by higher law
things have changed a little for us. It's a good change, but
we have to get used to the idea they no longer need us as
they did. That's okay but we must learn to live with it."

"I's say that's a good idea. If you do go up to
Pinehill, please say hi to Lynn and Bob for us. Even though
we live in the same town we hardly ever see them."

"I will, Sam. What are you up to?"

"Since we've been away from home, Dave, things have bee
pretty busy. I think Alewka and I will slip over to China to
see Tom and Tlang at the orphanage, then go over to the
monastery in the rock to see Sien. I think that will be a
good trip. Then, I suppose we'll go home."

"Good for you. I like the idea of you visiting. All I
have ever seen you do is work or care for someone else. It
is good for you to move about, Sam. Good for you."

"Well, thank you David. By the way that monument you
created to Old Pete? It's doing quite a job. Folks from all
over Pinehill spend a lot of time there. It attracts them.
Now folks are even coming from Philadelphia. It's attracting
a lot of attention. You did a good job on that one."

"Thanks, Sam. We both know what I did. I thought it was
right. If it serves the people, that is good. Thanks."

"You're welcome. Have you seen Maz lately?"

"Not since this morning. I saw him walk past here on his
way down to the river. That was a couple hours ago."

"Okay, I'll find him. Thanks, David."

"You're welcome, Sam. You and Alewka have a good trip
and we'll be sure to say hi to the Hunters."

"You have a good trip too."

With that Sam was on his way down to the river in search
of Mazunta. To get there he had to dodge and duck his way
through the kids and their ball game. Both AliAnn and Sammy
called out "Hi Grandpa!" and waved.

Maz was no longer on the beach. He and two other men had
taken a canoe out onto the river to test it for leaks,
cracks and worthiness. During the hot summers before the
rains begin the canoes sit out in the sun all day long. That
dries them out and they need to be regularly soaked to keep
the wood tight. If not, then cracks will develop as the
canoe dries out and then they begin to leak. The villagers
can fix that and that is what Maz and the other two were up
to now.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Easy as Duck Soup: What is the reason we say a task is "as
easy as duck soup"?

A pond of a puddle of water is, by humorous analogy, called
"duck soup". a puddle caused by rainfall will materialize
without human effort. thus "easy as duck soup" indicates a
project requiring no special effort.
