How can ice cause fires?
Melting ice can actually cause homes to catch fire! As odd
as that may sound, fire department experts say it's not that
rare. When ice melts, the resulting water can often seep
into areas where simple rainfall cannot. Fires can start
when water from melting ice gets into the walls of buildings
shorting out electrical connections. Homeowners are advised
of the importance of clearing gutters following major ice
storms.
What are Americans most afraid of?
According to a poll by Discovery Health Channel, Americans
are more afraid of snakes than anything else. One-quarter of
us say the critters inspire "extreme fear." Other top
extreme fears: being buried alive, heights, being bound or
tied up, drowning, speaking in public, hell, cancer,
tornadoes and hurricanes, and fire.

Tips And Tidbits
Russians remember killed reporter
Hundreds of people have gathered in central Moscow to pay
tribute to prominent journalist Anna Politkovskaya - a day
after she was murdered.
They lit candles and laid flowers as they held posters
describing the killing as politically-motivated.
The 48-year-old mother of two was known as a fierce critic
of the Kremlin's actions in Chechnya.
Her death has been widely condemned in Russia and elsewhere.
But there has been no word so far from the Kremlin.
Russia's prosecutor-general has personally taken charge of
the murder investigation - focusing on possible links to her
investigative reporting.
Ms Politkovskaya was due to publish an article on torture
and kidnappings in Chechnya on Monday, her Novaya Gazeta has
revealed.
Anna Politkovskaya was found shot dead on Saturday in a lift
at her block of flats in the Russian capital, Moscow.
Grainy CCTV footage from the building shows a man in a
baseball cap following her inside just before the shooting.
Police sources quoted by Russian media say Ms Politkovskaya
was shot three times in the body and once in the head.
A Makarov pistol and four cartridges were reportedly found
near her body.
Her newspaper is offering a $1m (£534,000) reward for
information to track down the killer.
Putin blamed
Mourners - some weeping - laid flowers outside Ms
Politkovskaya's home, as hundreds gathered in Moscow's
Pushkin Square and in the Chechen capital, Grozny, to
condemn the murder.
"Don't be silent," said a message written on a mask one of
the protesters was wearing across her mouth to highlight
allegations of press freedoms in Russia.
"The Kremlin has killed freedom of speech," said one of the
posters at Pushkin.
Another said "Anna was killed by cannibalist state power."
Others blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the
murder.
Ms Politkovskaya often wrote about human rights abuses in
Chechnya and her last published article in Novaya Gazeta
attacked pro-Moscow militia there.
Ms Politkovskaya had received death threats in the past and
suspicions were immediately raised that her death was a
contract killing.
Ms Politkovskaya became ill with food-poisoning on her way
to report on the Beslan school siege in 2004, which some
believed to be an attempt on her life.
In 2001, she fled to Vienna, Austria, after receiving e-mail
threats claiming a Russian police officer she had accused of
committing atrocities against civilians wanted to take his
revenge.

Your Immune System: Delicate Yet Critical
How It Serves You And Why You Need To Keep It Healthy
PART 5 of 12
RECOGNIZING THE INVADER
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/imagepages/19331.htm
"An allergy occurs when the immune system reacts to
substances (allergens) that are generally harmless and in
most people do not cause an immune response. Antibodies are
formed by the immune system in response to the presence of
an antigen such as pollen, mold, dust or dander." These are
important definitions and descriptions.
Recognize that these definitions and links come from
well-respected and trustworthy sites. (I think I have said
those words before, but it IS really important that unless
you have this kind of reliable knowledge, you can be so
easily misled.) All of these sites have research studies
attached. This is Step One in the care and feeding of your
Immune System.
Let's see how they could be put to practical use in your
body and in your life through examples. As you have just
read, the Immune System is a series of protective mechanisms
or systems found naturally in your body. This protection is
both internal and external. It provides protection to the
entire body, with many "subsections". These protect you
regionally (limb) and locally (finger). Immune System keeps
internal (pathogens/disease-causing) and external (foreign
bodies) invaders from affecting your everyday life. (For
ease of our discussion, these invaders are called "free
radicals".)

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Killing Is Cheap In Our World!
Who Gives A Damn About The Commandments?
I notice that while some Arab nations like Iran and Syria
still fight over the concept of western democracy in their
own countries, and are prepared to bomb, kill and fight wars
to prevent such democracies from getting close, they still
have archeologists in the country from many other countries.
There is an article out today about Swedish archeologists
having found a 100.000 year old giant camel in Syria. I am
somewhat amused that this kind of activity is permitted to
go on if Syria is so against the west.
You say Sweden is not the west. I agree, except it is still
a democratice country that is as representative of the west
as any other European country.
In other news there was a Russian reporter killed in Moscow.
It is felt her murder was a result of her professional
activities which were a continual harsh criticism of Putin.
She was always against his activities as he is known to have
killed thousands in a Stalin like push into Chechnya. His
human rights record isn't much better anywhere else either.
Putin is a former KGB operative and quite used to killing to
get his way.
Of course in Russia if you want someone killed you can
easily have it done for as little as $100. That's right. The
streets of Moscow and swarming with killers looking for
work. You can literally have someone killed for any reason
you want and the chances of being caught are so slim it is
as if they didn't exist at all. Mind you, if you want to
kill someone of prominence it usually costs a little more.
Putin is being blamed for the killing of this woman.
So, you who live in the US, Canada, UK or any other
democratic country that is politically stable, how would you
like to live in Russia?
Another area you might like to avoid today is France. The
Muslims in France are now fighting what is being called a
civil war. All over France they are fighting and killing the
police forces. It is not widely reported around the rest of
the world but it is clearly happening almost as if Muslim
communities have made the decision they want to take over
the countries in which they live. It would be no great
surprise to me if this kind of thing were to escalate into
other countries and eventually around the world. Their
biggest ally is the democratic ideal of human rights and the
people that fight for them. Those who are not pragmatic in
the dealing with such issues will usually be overcome for
these people have no concern for human rights except for
where they can use the rhetoric to aid their cause.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Larboard: What is the origin of the term "larboard"?
"Larboard" is from the Old English lade-bord, meaning
"loading side:. Since the steering oar of early sailing
vessels was on the starboard side, the opposite side was
brought up to the docks for loading.
