Was Lucille Ball a natural redhead?

Nope. America's most famous redhead got her red head out of
a bottle. She's not alone. Red hair, long stigmatized, is
becoming popular and lots of women are choosing to go red
instead of blonde these days.

Where in the world can you find the most redheads?

In the Highlands of Scotland. More than eleven percent of
the population there has red hair. The Irish also have a
high percentage of redheads - about ten percent of the
population. In the US, only about two to five percent of the
population is NATURALLY redheaded. Worldwide, redheads
account for less than ONE percent of the population.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW ... with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
------------------------------------

Are You Using These Three Ways
to Mismanage Conflict?

Conflict is a daily occurrence in all areas of life. No one
is exempt. No relationship is without it. I believe even a
human and his or her clone would manage to find strong
differences of perception, perspective or values!

Writing about disputes makes good copy. Just check your
local newspaper or late-night news program. Who is doing
what to whom IS the news! The more horrific, the better, it
seems. It's the stuff gossip is made of, as well.

Theoretically, the parties involved have many ways to
respond to or resolve their conflicts. In actuality, three
prevail: avoidance, withholding and violence. All three do
nothing to turn the confrontation into communication. In
fact, they are guaranteed to do just the opposite.

AVOIDANCE

If I don't say anything, there will be no conflict. Not so,
your breath gets short, your stomach churns and your
shoulders live permanently at your earlobes. The conflict
has not disappeared. You are wearing it! And, suffering.

Certainly, there are times when avoidance works. Everyone
occasionally has a bad day. That is a good time to use
avoidance. The problem is short-lived. Most people know what
caused it. They care enough about the person to stay out of
their way for a day or so. Wise choice. It's best to avoid
them.

If they have more bad than good days, though, it needs to be
talked about. Exerting control over others in your
environment by expecting them to adjust to your bad moods is
tyranny.

Avoiders often appear to be compliant and accepting. They
smile. They cooperate. They rock no boats. Inwardly, they
are seething. If they have low self-esteem, they may even
blame themselves for their inability to 'get along' with the
tyrant. Not so! They need practical skills for expressing
their points of view.

If you are using avoidance as your primary conflict
management strategy, how is it working for you? How's your
health? Your level of frustration? Your self-esteem? Your
self-confidence? Conflict management skills are learned.
Either you use the ones you've learned by watching your
family, or you use the ones you grew up with. All learned.
So, wouldn't it be wise to learn constructive, useful,
effective ones instead?

WITHHOLDING

Withholding takes place when you do not want to address the
conflict but you want another person to know you are angry,
upset or disappointed. You simply do not give the person
what they want or need. You ignore them when they speak, or,
purposefully misunderstand them. You do the minimum
required, less than your capability. The 'silent treatment'
is a form of withholding, too. You refuse to speak to the
person with whom you have the conflict or unmet need.

Does this work? Perhaps it gets you the response you want in
the short-term, however, in the long-term it fails
miserably…especially in the workplace. All it does there is
escalate the conflict. You've noticed that, I'm sure.

Another form of withholding is triangulating—a descriptive
term which means not being direct with the person with whom
you have the dispute but attempting to go through a third
person. The thing with disputes, complaints and gripes is
that you have to tell someone who can actually do something
about it. Otherwise, it can be simply gossip and venting.
You have to be careful. Your reputation is on the line…and
your job may be as well.

In the workplace, you may have a supervisor who is willing
and trained to help. No matter what, though, any employer or
supervisor would be much happier to have you work out
differences yourself. That requires skill, and, fortunately,
those skills can be learned.

VIOLENCE

Each year between 1992 and 1996 more than 2 million U.S.
citizens were victims of a violent crime while at work or on
duty…and the largest number of those were in retail sales.
Isn't that startling? The good news is that violent crimes
have declined since 1993. There are still far too many.

The Canadian Center for Occupational Health & Safety defines
workplace violence as "...any act in which a person is
abused, threatened, intimidated or assaulted in his or her
employment." Workplace violence includes:

* threatening behavior such as shaking fists, destroying
property or throwing objects;

* verbal or written threats - any expression of an intent to
inflict harm;

* harassment - any behavior that demeans, embarrasses,
humiliates, annoys, alarms or verbally abuses a person and
that is known or would be expected to be unwelcome. This
includes words, gestures, intimidation, bullying, or other
inappropriate activities.

* verbal abuse - swearing, insults or condescending
language.

* physical attacks - hitting, shoving, pushing or kicking.

Many state governments and corporations have strongly-worded
policies regarding workplace violence. According to an
American Society of Industrial Security survey, the top
strategy indicated by respondents for preventing workplace
violence is 'employee training.'

As a conflict management expert, I agree. Pro-active
companies are ones who understand the high cost of conflict
in the workplace on a day-to-day basis. When I offer
training in conflict and anger management, negotiation,
mediation and communication, executives and their staffs
learn and practice the skills they need to feel competent,
confident and, yes, comfortable enough to handle conflict
effectively. And as a bonus, the training affects the
quality of life for each person in all situations. Happier,
healthier employees = Greater productivity. Not rocket
science!

A 'zero tolerance' policy is imperative for every single
workplace. Nothing less should be tolerated. Violence is
simply unacceptable. We need to feel...and be...safe at
work.

Your Immune System: Delicate Yet Critical
How It Serves You And Why You Need To Keep It Healthy
PART 7 of 12

If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, here lie
some answers. Our bodies are meant to function until you die
of old age. And the Immune System is there to help you
achieve that goal. Does it not make sense then to learn how
to care for and feed it wisely? Arthritis, Lupus, Cancer,
Cataracts, Macular Degeneration, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes,
Alzheimer's, etc. are not aging conditions. They are
degenerative conditions. And can be handled very differently
and very hopefully.

Here are a couple of examples from other parts of "life" to
help you "connect" this new knowledge to your "real" life
experiences. You have a new lawn. You are excited and proud,
and spend a lot of "quality time" nurturing it. You water
it, feed it, cut it, check it for bugs, and treat those. And
if you find moss, (heaven forbid!) you stamp it out with its
own "killer". Then you add more chemicals in the fall to
prevent other problems. This is your work of art. You treat
your car the very same and proud way.

Or relate your body to a new house. You polish it and dust
it. You vacuum it very frequently. You are a very proud
homeowner. It is said that for most of us, our homes will
be our most prized possession (well apart from guys and
their cars, right?) The point is that you wouldn't forget to
clean your home or fertilize your lawn or wash and polish
your car. As the proud homeowner of your body, you should be
giving the same high degree of attention to it. All the
time...till you are "old": not degenerating. Your parents
did it for you till you could take over. Then other things
got in the way and you began to take it for granted. Your
body is tremendously forgiving...up to a point.

An aging condition is natural and happens because the body
delivers less of a product i.e. less lubricant, in a slower
manner, or meets a change of needs and adjusts accordingly.
For instance in an aging knee, the fluid produced would be
less in amount, and you would be moving it less, so the
entire fluid process wouldn't let you move as fast. In an
arthritic knee, the inner surfaces deteriorate from overuse
(any number of reasons): not from aging, causing the fluid
to dry up much faster. (It's the movement of the knee joint
that produces the natural lubricating fluid, Glucosamine.)
In relation to sugars, a healthy body is normally ready only
to manufacture as much insulin as needed. For instance, in
Diabetes, the process of balancing the insulin production
and sugar intake is impaired. This is not aging: it's
degeneration.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Dingbats At The Helm!

North Korea's actions and tactics are both laughable and
predictable. They always fire the weapon of last resort
first.

Folks who do that are usually those who, while they won't
ever admit it, well recognize they are very, very weak. That
is certainly true of North Korea.

They think that if they have a nuclear weapon and they
threaten someone with it they can then negotiate the deals
they want. They will soon find out that doesn't work. Now
comes the dangerous part. To save face or to get what they
want they may have to fire a nuclear missile and explode it
in a way the world will pay attention. That, of course, is
what they have now threatened to do.

It's amazing the things that happen when you have dingbat at
the controls, or in this case maybe a whole box full of
dingbats.

The one great risk is that Kim Jong Il will fire a missile
and someone will die. Then he can look forward to being
annihilated.

I think back to the Reagan years when Kadafe of Libya was
making threatening noises. Reagan sent two jets in to take
out Kadafe's palace, killing some children and
grandchildren. Since that date Kadafe has become as tame as
a pussycat and is now even an ally of the US.

I don't want war, or killing, or rhetoric that strikes fear
into the heart of anyone. Possibly though a move similar to
the Libya move would put a stop to all these North Korea
things and even end up being better for the people of North
Korea. It is about time they were fed, housed and clothed.

But, I'm a pragmatist and a redneck so you know full well
any suggestion I might have that makes any kind of sense
will most certainly not be used or given the light of day.
So you can look forward to long and protracted rhetoric on
the news. And as you do so you will see lots to make you
fearful, frustrated and anxious.

Don't forget you can overcome all those things. It is not a
matter of turning off the TV, although that might help. True
peace and strength comes from inside and one has to work
toward it. If that is what you want then get The Saga of
Pinehill Books I and II. They will show you the way to

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Lavender: Why was the flower known as "lavender" given that
name?

It was once the custom, now, unfortunately, no longer
followed, for laundresses to place a sprig of this plant in
with the laundry they had cleaned in order to scent it. The
Italian word for washing is lavanda.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

"Spend 80 percent of your time focusing on the
opportunities of tomorrow rather than the problems of
yesterday." -– Brian Tracy

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

Keep in Mind...

Trying to dress an active little one is like trying to
thread a sewing machine while it's running.

There are only two things a child will share willingly:
communicable diseases and their mother's age.

Cleaning your house while your kids are at home is like
trying to shovel the driveway during a snowstorm.

Kids really brighten a household; they never turn off any
lights.

An alarm clock is a device for waking people up who don't
have small kids.

Shouting to make your kids obey is like using the horn to
steer your car, and you get about the same results!

Any child can tell you that the sole purpose of a middle
name is so he can tell when he's really in trouble.
