TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

What country has the highest per capita chocolate
consumption?

Is it true that chocolate is good for the heart?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What is the "ginger gene"?

It's the name given by the British tabloid press to the gene
that produces red hair. The melancortin 1 receptor, or MC1R,
is found on the 16th of the 23 human chromosome pairs.
Discovered by Jonathan Rees in 1995, the gene is recessive
and both parents must have it (though not necessarily red
hair) in order to produce a red haired child. It's possible
for red hair to skip several generations and for two
dark-haired parents to produce a redhead (if they both carry
that gene).

Is white chocolate really chocolate?

As the chocoholics here might already have guessed, white
chocolate is NOT chocolate. The US government even says so.
Real chocolate must contain no fat other than cocoa butter
(up to five percent dairy butter is allowed). White
chocolate is 30 percent vegetable fats, 30 percent milk
solids, 30 percent sugar, and vanilla. Some white chocolate
contains cocoa butter, but no white chocolate contains
chocolate solids. Cocoa butter is the 50 percent of the
cocoa bean that is fat. It is also used in cosmetics and
pharmaceuticals. The other 50 percent of the cocoa bean (the
chocolate solids) is composed of various chemicals,
including caffeine, theobromine, phenylethylamine, and
seratonin.

Here's To Think On ... with Ken Darby

Tickle Their Imagination!

A professor at the University of Pennsylvania was known for
giving boring, cliché-ridden lectures.

At the beginning of one semester, an innovative class
breathed new life into the course by assigning baseball
plays to each hackneyed phrase.

For example, when the professor said, "On the other hand,"
that counted as a base hit. "By the same token" was a
strike out; "and so on" counted as a stolen base. Divided
into two teams by the center aisle of the lecture hall, the
students played inning after inning of silent but vigorous
baseball.

On the last day of class, the impossible happened: the score
was tied and bases were loaded. Then the batter hit a home
run! The winning team stood and cheered wildly.

Though deeply appreciative, the professor later was quoted
as wondering why only half of the students had been
enthusiastic about his lectures.

Gee! Are you that boring? I sure hope I'm not. Can you
imagine being a teacher, speaker, professor or other one who
communicates to groups, and being that boring. One's whole
life must be a bore.

The point I am getting to here, is this: When you speak to
anyone, when you write for anyone, when you have a public
presentation to make, you OWE it to your listener, or your
reader, to give them your material in an "interesting" way.

Out of nothing more than mere respect for their time you owe
your listener that much, otherwise they can get your
presentation from books that are far more interesting.

Your job is not only to make the presentation, but to make
the presentation interesting. If you do not you will lose
your audience fast, real fast.

I used to instruct, part time, at a college. I found that
only about ten percent of the instructors had the courage to
make their presentations interesting. I know that when I
finished a class, I was sweating. It was hard work.

In that college there were eight or ten others who worked
the same.

Then there were seventy or eighty who simply walked into a
room, advised the class the lesson for the day was on a
particular series of pages, then sat down at the desk and
read for the rest of the time. One of the things that really
griped me was that these people used to get paid. Oh well!

And therein is the heart of the matter. Whatever you do for
public consumption, make it interesting. Failure to do so
will lose your audience, and undoubtedly the success you
were trying to achieve. It is not enough to have the courage
to stand and speak. You must go further.

Tickle Their Imagination!

Your Immune System: Delicate Yet Critical
How It Serves You And Why You Need To Keep It Healthy
PART 8 of 12

The immune system also plays a crucial role in your ability
to weather exposure to parasites, bacteria, viruses, toxins,
and other hazards that interact daily with your body. Your
body's struggle against disease is played out twenty four
hours a day, seven days a week, in each and every individual
cell. Your immune system meets innumerable challenges and
overcomes countless enemies throughout your lifetime.

Although your Immune System is seen to be completely
supportive, it does have a negative component. This it the
"auto-immune" activity. This occurs when the body doesn't
appear to like itself and tries to attack its own cells, as
in the case of lupus or scleroderma. There is controversy
about its possible existence, cause, and treatment.
Traditional treatment calls for more chemicals, resulting in
more free radicals. Are you beginning to see the
connections? There are children who have a very limited
(compromised) immune system. They have to spend their entire
lives in very protective environments so as to avoid
exposure to potential life-threatening organisms.

How would you overload or cause your immune system to
malfunction? Simply by using up its supply of antioxidants
at a rate higher than what your body is being supplied with.
In other words, what you eat doesn't supply enough nutrients
to power the system consistently or adequately. So the
carrot you eat, provides some antioxidants. The chocolate
bar you snack on provides elements that the body wants to
get rid of, especially sugars.

Unfortunately, you are not the only contributor to "neglect"
in your body. Other situations that add to this
deterioration are chemicals, and irritants such as molds,
pollens, etc. These are not natural to your body. They may
be common, but they are not "of the body". They may be going
into your body, on it, or being inhaled. Your eyes, nose,
throat, skin, etc. are all entry points. They are those
unpleasant "noxious" smells you breathe, your headache
medication, your calorie-reduced drinks, surgery and all its
related drugs, some types of fillings in your teeth, the
implants in your bones, the fluorescent lights in your
environment...the list goes on. They all contribute to this
unwanted demand in your body. And what about the unnatural
amount of salt or the preservatives you find in your
prepared foods that enhance taste, freshness, and
appearance. (We ask for them because we want our foods to
look great and be tasty.)

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

You're Not Fighting For The Ideal Cause You Say!

It's like watching a chess game. A move is made here and the
opponent takes a long time to think it through then makes
his move. Now it's our turn to take some time to think
things through then we'll make a move.

And so it goes. The only problem is that sometimes sides
don't take enough time to calculate their moves or worse yet
they most often don't know their own motives.

That is to say moves are made not to prevent war, but
instead to save face, get one up on the opponent, get into a
better bargaining position - all sorts of motives other than
peace or getting along in the world.

Who do you blame? EACH AND EVERY PLAYER. No "side" in any
conflict is without impure motives. Each is more worried
about their own ego more than living together in peace. That
even applies in most marital disputes. What happens at home
happens in, by and for the country. The glasses you look
through in your home life are the same glasses you look
through in all parts of your life.

The common man should be sick of it. It is the same with
wars and conflicts all over the world. They are all ego
driven by the lunatics in position of power. By the way,
like it or not, that includes our own leaders, the leaders
of the country where you live right now. The point is that
the leader on any side of a dispute who is not striving
exclusively for peace, is fighting for their own ego.

Yes all you democratic countries that includes you, too. You
think you can impose democracy on any people? That is a
preposterous ideal. Some of the countries in which you try
to do this are still nomadic and tribesmen. They know no
other form or manner of government and don't want any other
form. What are you doing there in the first place?

In the name of being a peacemaker you become a war monger.
You say you are in a foreign country to protect a people
from a violent warlord yet more people die when you arrive
than ever did under the warlord. When even the oppressed
fight to get you out of their country does that not tell you
something? Are you too blind to see truth? Or is it that you
want something different than you said you wanted?

While all these countries take their young and put them in
harms way they are also undermining peace at home. Those
who live in the democratic "freedom" loving countries are
not free. They live in fear. They fear terrorism. They fear
their own governments. They fear their neighbors, especially
if they are of a different nationality. They fear being able
to earn a living. They fear they may lose jobs they have.
They even subtly fear the church who while failing to give
them peace, love and prosperity also have internal
hierarchies that do not include the parishioners.

So you can look forward to long and protracted rhetoric on
the news. And as you do so you will see lots to make you
fearful, frustrated and anxious.

Don't forget you can overcome all those things. It is not a
matter of turning off the TV, although that might help. True
peace and strength comes from inside and one has to work
toward it. If that is what you want then get The Saga of
Pinehill Books I and II. They will show you the way to
finding peace and prosperity within your own life.
