What country has the highest per capita chocolate
consumption?
I thought it would be any country I personally resided in,
but it's not. It's Switzerland. Long vacations, lots of
chocolate, and neutrality in all wars. Hmm...
Is it true that chocolate is good for the heart?
Well, it IS true that some research suggests chocolate might
lower your risk of heart disease. Chocolate contains stearic
acid, a type of saturated fat that may actually lower the
so-called "bad" cholesterol in your blood (most saturated
fats increase it). Chocolate also contains high levels of
phenol, a chemical that researchers believe may reduce the
risk of heart disease. In addition, chocolate has
antioxidants (generally good), as well as chemicals that
reduce the body's response to pain signals, creating an
overall sense of well-being. I know I feel good when I eat
the stuff.

'Huge rise' in Iraqi death tolls
An estimated 655,000 Iraqis have died since 2003 who might
still be alive but for the US-led invasion, according to a
survey by a US university.
The research compares mortality rates before and after the
invasion from 47 randomly chosen areas in Iraq.
The figure is considerably higher than estimates by official
sources or the number of deaths reported in the media.
It is vigorously disputed by supporters of the war in Iraq,
including US President George W Bush.
John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHBSPH)
estimate that the mortality rates have more than doubled
since the invasion to overthrow Saddam Hussein, causing an
average of 500 deaths a day.
In the past, Mr Bush has put the civilian death toll in Iraq
at 30,000, and hours after details of the latest research
were published he dismissed JHBSPH's methodology as "pretty
well discredited".
The John Hopkins researchers argue their statistical
approach is more reliable than counting dead bodies, given
the obstacles preventing more comprehensive fieldwork in the
violent and insecure conditions of Iraq.
"I stand by the figure that a lot of innocent people have
lost their life... and that troubles me, and it grieves me,"
Mr Bush told reporters at the White House.
"Six-hundred thousand or whatever they guessed at is just...
it's not credible," Mr Bush said.
Sharp rise
The researchers spoke to nearly 1,850 families, comprising
more than 12,800 people in dozens of 40-household clusters
around the country.
Of the 629 deaths they recorded among these families since
early 2002, 13% took place in the 14 months before the
invasion and 87% in the 40 months afterwards.
Such a trend repeated nationwide would indicate a rise in
annual death rates from 5.5 per 1,000 to 13.3 per 1,000 -
meaning the deaths of some 2.5% of Iraq's 25 million
citizens in the last three-and-a-half years.
The researchers say that in nearly 80% of the individual
cases, family members produced death certificates to support
their answers.
Reliable data is very hard to obtain in Iraq, where anti-US
insurgents and sectarian death squads pose a grave danger to
civilian researchers.
The survey updates earlier research using the same "cluster"
technique which indicated that 100,000 Iraqis had died
between the invasion and April 2004 - a figure that was also
dismissed by many supporters of the US-led coalition.
'
Survivor bias'
While critics point to the discrepancy between this and
other independent surveys (such as Iraq Body Count's figure
of 44-49,000 civilian deaths, based on media reports), the
Bloomberg School team says its method may actually
underestimate the true figure.
"Families, especially in households with combatants killed,
could have hidden deaths. Under-reporting of infant deaths
is a widespread concern in surveys of this type," the
authors say.
"Entire households could have been killed, leading to
survivor bias."
The survey suggests that most of the extra deaths - 601,000
- would have been the result of violence, mostly gunfire,
and suggests that 31% could be attributable to action by
US-led coalition forces.
The survey is to be published in a UK medical journal, the
Lancet, on Thursday.
In an accompanying comment, the Lancet's Richard Horton
acknowledges that the 2004 survey provoked controversy, but
emphasises that the 2006 follow-up has been recommended by
"four expert peers... with relatively minor revisions"

Your Immune System: Delicate Yet Critical
How It Serves You And Why You Need To Keep It Healthy
PART 9 of 12
Your body also recognizes every drug you coming into it (no
matter by what method) and wants to get rid of it. Every
drug, no matter how innocent or helpful, is made up of
chemicals. So think of all you take in, and, yes, that
includes the wines and other "spirits", the tobacco, and
even "recreation" drugs, as well as the cleaning aids we
have in our mops, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.
These might be considered pretty obvious "triggers" for the
immune system to start working, but others could something
as unusual as the insulation in your house or nail polish.
If you don't have a healthy immune system (abundance of
anti-oxidants), you are at the mercy of any and every
negative condition in your environment: smoke, air
pollution, water pollution, etc., even stress. Your body is
not only physical...it has the emotional and spiritual part
of it and these are vital to its healthy balance. And stress
is a huge factor, but don't get caught up in blaming stress
for all your woes. That's easy to do and often it's not a
correct assumption.
For a time, it was widely assumed that infectious diseases
had been brought under control, especially in our
industrialized world. We now know that this is not true. The
appearance of AIDS, the huge increase in Sexually
Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and the recent re-appearance of
Tuberculosis (TB) are very real and disturbing. As well, we
also now have harmful microorganisms that are resistant to
at least two very powerful groups of antibiotics. If you are
exposed to these pathogens (disease-causing microorganisms),
your immune system might be unable to protect you. This is
the immune response malfunctioning (overloaded) or not even
existing any more.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as

Know The Law!
Yesterday I wrote of how all players in this North Korea
dispute were "warring with their egos". I made the point
that if they were not fighting exclusively for peace then
all they were doing was trying to satisfy their egos, using
our lives and resources to do so.
Have you ever heard of the law "If you are not for me then
you are against me."? That is what is happening here. The
law doesn't look at a situation and then decide some are not
bad and others are. The law says - IF YOU ARE NOT FOR PEACE
THEN YOU ARE AGAINST IT.
Pretty rough huh!? Don't blame me. I didn't create the law.
I merely bring it to your attention.
That is why I wonder what is going on within the Muslim
community. Those who stand idly by and let 10 percent of
their population cause war, death, destruction and fear are
actually aiding and abetting the condition.
The US all around the world is not seen as a nation
prosecuting peace. It is seen as a nation who is out to win
regardless of cost. If it means going to war then so be it.
And the same is true locally, and personally. If you don't
prosecute peace within your own life you aid and abett the
alternative. Those who are not for peace are against it.
Those who think peace is the absence of war or killing are
also aiding and abetting the situation. Peace means far more
than the absence of war.
Peace comes from inside every person. It is spread with
knowledge, loving, caring and helping. It abhors guns at any
level for any purpose. It abhors arguing and "fighting to
get ahead". It abhors ego driven responses to any condition
but loves and abides by wisdom and decisions made for the
good of others. It comes from inside and it is the
responsibility of every soul to find and promote peace.
Peace and strength comes from inside and one has to work
toward it. If that is what you want then get The Saga of
Pinehill Books I and II. They will show you the way to

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Magazine: What is the reason a periodical is called a
"magazine"?
Because it's considered a storehouse for numerous articles.
The term comes from makhzan, the Arabic word for
"storehouse", and was originally applied to a place used by
the Army for storing arms. "Magazine" was first used in its
present sense in 1731 when "The Gentleman's Magazine"
appeared.

Hospital Emergency Room
A blonde hurries into the hospital emergency room late one
night with the tip of her index finger shot off.
"How did this happen?" the emergency room doctor asked her.
"Well, I was trying to commit suicide," the blonde replied.
"What?" sputtered the doctor. "You tried to commit suicide
by shooting off the tip of your finger?"
"No, silly!" the blonde said. "First I put the gun to my
chest, and I thought, "I just paid $6000 for these, I'm not
shooting myself in the chest.'"
"So, then?" asked the doctor.
"Then I put the gun in my mouth, and I thought, 'I just paid
$3000 to get my teeth straightened, I'm not shooting myself
in the mouth.'"
"So, then?"
"Then I put the gun to my ear, and I thought 'This is going
to make a loud noise,' so I put my finger in the other ear
before I pulled the trigger."
