What is "Quidditch"?

What does the "J.K." in J.K. Rowling stand for?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Is it true that there's a substance in turkey that makes you
sleepy?

Turkey DOES contain the amino acid L-tryptophan, a substance
found naturally in many plant and animal proteins. And
L-tryptophan aids in the production of the neurotransmitter
serotonin, which has a tranquilizing effect. L-tryptophan
has been used to treat insomnia. However, when taken with
protein (like, for instance, turkey), L-tryptophan is
usually not effective, says the University of Florida's
College of Pharmacy. So that sleepy feeling after
Thanksgiving dinner is more likely the effect of a heavy
meal, alcohol, and a desire to not do the dishes. It's NOT
the L-tryptophan.

What are "Muggles"?

If you don't know what a Muggle is, then you've managed to
completely avoid the current "Harry Potter" mania. A
"Muggle" in the Harry Potter universe is what wizards call
human beings who are unaware of the magic world or just
plain nonmagical. Muggles for the most part are oblivious to
the magic world and to the society of magical people that
exists alongside them. Muggles don't believe magic exists.
They find nonmagical ways to explain everything that happens
to them.

Is A Nudge More Effective Than A Shove?

Adam was part of a two-person team responsible for
negotiating company-wide salary increases. Trina sat next to
him, completing the team. The CEO and CFO represented
management and there was one voice from the venture
capitalists.

Adam sat at the table after two seemingly very long hours,
jacket off, ready to pounce. He was tired, worn-down and
fed-up. Health benefits were the final issue. It had been
left to the end because of the huge difference of opinion as
to whose responsibility it really is. The conversation
heated up. Adam, hot under the collar, had had enough. He
leaned forward to speak, rising to the bait, exasperation
oozing from every pore. Trina, observing the sparks, was
determined to keep the fire under control. She nudged Adam,
saying,

“We’re doing well. Let’s sit back and listen a little
longer.” Adam relaxed. Management spoke. Their offer was
close to reasonable. Two quick volleys and the deal was
done. A nudge saved the day…and the health care of one
hundred families! It was a nudge in the right direction.

PRACTICE THE GENTLE ART OF NUDGING

Are you more motivated by a nudge or a shove? Probably
we’ve all been motivated by both. One is easier to hear and
accept. By definition, to nudge someone is “to seek the
attention of; to prod lightly; to urge into action”. That
sounds gentle…and positive.

You’ve heard that you’ll catch more flies with honey than
with vinegar. It’s true.

We are generally under-appreciated and over-criticized.
When we’re offered honey, we’re hungry for it and it is much
more palatable than vinegar. Who enjoys someone’s acid
tongue raining down criticism? I’ll take dripping praise,
recognition and acknowledgment over that any day, won’t you?

Unfortunately, manure also seems to be a fly magnet so that
may be where the metaphor runs out. It does remind us,
though, to be sure that our appreciation and intentions are
genuine because any other kind smells!

Nudging is catching people doing things right! Use your
time and energy for moving the positive forward.

I used to have a piano teacher who told me to “Keep making
beautiful music and let the bad notes fall on the floor.”
Of course, each time I played the piece I was careful to
have fewer bad notes because she reminded me to focus on the
music not the mistakes. Catch people doing things right.
You’ll feel better with your focus on the positive. They’ll
respond and give you more of what you want.

No, I’m not suggesting denial. Things do need improving and
they need to be talked about. If, however, your focus is on
encouraging rather than discouraging, you’ll see a
significant increase in the behaviors you prefer. William
James, the father of modern psychology, said,

“The deepest craving of the human nature is the need to feel
appreciated.” So, get out the honey and catch them flies!
Nudge them in the right direction and things will go faster.

PRACTICE THE JUDICIOUS USE OF THOUGHTFUL SHOVING

The problem with shoving in general is that it is too
careless, too thoughtless and too often a knee-jerk
reaction. It can be a street-fighter strategy that leaves
your victim bleeding and stunned. Although usually not a
felony, it should be! So, no street-fighting! And, we do
need to know what to do when a nudge is insufficient and a
death blow is too severe.

I was shoved once…and hard. I was twelve years old and I
was called to the principal’s office. Being a top student,
president of this and that, an accomplished musician and an
all around asset to the school, I was certain that, as it
was Awards Day, the principal, Mr. Martin, simply wanted to
tell me personally how much he appreciated my efforts.

Imagine my surprise when he said,

“Well, young lady, you are at the top of your game around
here in so many ways and you’ll receive the awards to prove
it. We have to give them to you but we don’t want to. You
think too much of yourself and it shows. So, take my
advice, fix the attitude. You’re destined for success, but
you’ll be sidetracked by your attitude.”

I felt like I had been shoved against the wall by a Mack
truck! Was it effective? Was it the truth? YES, on both
counts. Thinking back, several teachers had tried to nudge
me towards that truth, but I was not listening. It took the
big shove to wake me up.

Mr. Martin was a kind man with my best interests at heart.
There was no doubt. It took something out of him to exert
the force required to turn my head in the right direction.
He knew when to shove…and how. Don’t shove unless you have
excellent communication skills and a clearly thought-out
strategy.

Shoving from anger creates injury. Unless you are willing
to terminate the relationship, you need honest, kind
communication and the skills to manage conflict if you want
a healthy result from a ‘shove’. Be sure you learn these
things before you push your weight around. Without them,
you will be a bully or a bull in a china shop!

Know when to nudge, know when to shove, but, first, know
when to appreciate.

Your Immune System: Delicate Yet Critical
How It Serves You And Why You Need To Keep It Healthy
PART 12 of 12

As you have been reading, have you felt overwhelmed and
unsure, yet grateful to your body that it doesn't make you
realize how important and powerful your immune system is?
Take heart...here are some eye-opening equations. Optimum
amounts of nutrients and a degenerative condition equal a
renewing healthy body. A relatively healthy body without
any added chemicals, including drugs, equals a very happy
person!

Isn't it strange that those things that could have kept you
healthy naturally are not taught or discussed. It's as
though we feel our bodies are indestructible and if
something breaks down, we just need to add a few chemicals
(drugs) to patch it up! Doesn't it seem relatively simple to
repair your immune system without hurting it more?

Slowly things are changing. We are starting to pay attention
to the cause and effect aspect of our body. We pay attention
to our cars, our gardens, our homes, etc. How far behind
will our bodies come? Until something traps your attention.
And this will most likely come in the form of a very
debilitating condition. A healthy, energetic life is
entirely possible, even if you have a degenerative
condition. But it will take time to restore the protective
measures of the Immune System. It didn't get worn out in a
few days. Neither will it be restored quickly, but it can be
restored. The decision to start this repair is yours.
Remember this simple formula: more anti-oxidants than free
radicals going in equals health and longevity. Start to take
back control of your health today. The decision is yours
alone.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

The Race To End All Stupidity!

Can you believe it? The whole world is “getting ready just
in case”.

Even Australia is now working on its own nuclear program
“just in case”.

It’s a downhill race to extinction. Of course those with
lots of money think they are invincible, much like men do
when it comes to disease and death. Everyone overlooks
completely what the end results of this course of action
will be. Many don’t even know.

All a country thinks is that they may need it for
protection, never giving a moments thought to the totals of
nuclear weapons that are now being manufactured. Each
country, of course, thinks it has the world’s best
safeguards, that nothing wrong will happen, that the lessons
of Chernobyl were well learned by everyone.

And, naturally, their security in handling these weapons is
second to none. There isn’t a chance in the world that
anyone will get their hands on “our” nuclear weapons.

Have you ever seen such foolishness? Can anyone explain to
me what good any of these weapons can do? Can you even
explain to me how they will protect a country? Can you
explain to me how it will keep any country from attacking?

The ONLY result that can happen is bad.

So why are countries pursuing this end? Where is the
intelligence in man? What is he after? Have we come so far
only to explode ourselves and the entire world into
extinction? There is no other purpose for these weapons.
They can be used for nothing else.

Where are the rational people of governments? For what
purpose does Iran need nuclear weapons? Why does North Korea
need nuclear weapons? There is no reason, not even self
defense. Only those who are stupid would fail to realize
that if you were attacked by a nuclear weapon you would no
longer be able to fight. Therefor any country developing
nuclear weapons must have “pre-emptive” ideas in mind.

Think on that for a minute. Every country in the world that
has nuclear weapons is sitting on the very edge of their
chair with one finger on the button just waiting for
anything, including a mouse beneath their chair, to cause
them to push the button.

So, I bet you feel nice and peaceful right about now, right?
I know, this whole thing is disturbing yet that is what is
happening.

That is why peace within yourself is so important. Ghandi
had the right idea, peaceful resistance. What would happen
if no one turned up at the polls to vote on election day? Do
you think the government would think something was wrong?

Peace is up to you. It is your responsibility. Only you can
bring peace to your life and those whom you influence. One
has to work toward it and with it.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Needle: Where did we get the expression "give him the
needle"?

The term comes from a tailor's practical joke. When a group
of tailors are sitting on the table side by side, one tailor
will take his needle and slyly jab another in the rear. The
startled reaction of the victim of this practical joke is
considered by many to be very funny.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

"To climb steep hills requires slow pace at first." --
William Shakespeare

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

John invited his mother over for dinner. During the meal,
his mother couldn't help noticing how beautiful John's
roommate Julie was.

She had long been suspicious of a relationship between John
and his roommate, and this only made her more curious. Over
the course of the evening, while watching the two interact,
she started to wonder if there was more between John and the
roommate than met the eye.

Reading his mom's thoughts, John volunteered, "I know what
you must be thinking, but I assure you, Julie and I are just
roommates."

About a week later, Julie came to John and said, "Ever since
your mother came to dinner, I can't find the beautiful
silver gravy ladle. You don't suppose she took it, do you?"

John said, "Well, I doubt it, but I'll write her a letter
just to be sure."

So he sat down and wrote, "Dear Mother, I'm not saying you
'did' take a gravy ladle from my house, and I'm not saying
you 'did not' take a gravy ladle. But the fact remains that
one has been missing ever since you were here for dinner."

Several days later, John received a letter from his mother
which read, "Dear Son, I'm not saying that you 'do' sleep
with Julie, and I'm not saying that you 'do not' sleep with
Julie. But the fact remains that if she was sleeping in her
own bed, she would have found the gravy ladle by now.
Love, Mom."
