Can animal hearts replace human hearts?

Animal organs have already been used as temporary
replacements for human organs, including hearts. And pig
heart valves are being used to repair human hearts. There's
much controversy, of course, over such
"xenotransplantation," but that hasn't stopped scientists
from experimenting with the possibility of using animal
parts to heal ill humans.

What US government agency has already drafted provisions for
use in the event of nuclear war?

You'd like to think that it would be FEMA (Federal Emergency
Management Agency), and to be fair, I'm sure that they have
plans in place, too. But according to Mr. Smarty Pants'
Facts About Economics, Marketing, and Business, at least one
other US agency is thinking ahead: the Internal Revenue
Service. Mr. Smarty Pants says that the new IRS employee
manual includes provisions for collecting taxes in the
aftermath of nuclear war. Sounds suspiciously like an urban
legend to me, but maybe it IS true. If so, there really is
NO escape from death and taxes.

How Long Can the World Feed Itself?
by Gwynne Dyer

We are still living off the proceeds of the Green
Revolution, but that hit diminishing returns twenty years
ago. Now we live in a finely balanced situation where world
food supply just about meets demand, with no reserve to
cover further population growth. But the population will
grow anyway, and the world's existing grain supply for human
consumption is being eroded by three different factors:
meat, heat and biofuels.

For the sixth time in the past seven years, the human race
will grow less food than it eats this year. We closed the
gap by eating into food stocks accumulated in better times,
but there is no doubt that the situation is getting serious.
The world's food stocks have shrunk by half since 1999, from
a reserve big enough to feed the entire world for 116 days
then to a predicted low of only 57 days by the end of this
year.

That is well below the official safety level, and there is
no sign that the downward trend is going to reverse. If it
doesn't, then at some point not too far down the road we
reach the point of absolute food shortages, and rationing by
price kicks in. In other words, grain prices soar, and the
poorest start to starve.

The miracle that has fed us for a whole generation now was
the Green Revolution: higher-yielding crops that enabled us
to almost triple world food production between 1950 and 1990
while increasing the area of farmland by no more than ten
percent. The global population more than doubled in that
time, so we are now living on less than half the land per
person than our grandparents needed. But that was a
one-time miracle, and it's over. Since the beginning of the
1990s, crop yields have essentially stopped rising.

The world's population continues to grow, of course, though
more slowly than in the previous generation. We will have to
find food for the equivalent of another India and another
China in the next fifty years, and nobody has a clue how we
are going to do that. But the more immediate problem is
that the world's existing grain supply is under threat.

One reason we are getting closer to the edge is the
diversion of grain for meat production. As incomes rise, so
does the consumption of meat, and feeding animals for meat
is a very inefficient way of using grain. It takes between
eleven and seventeen calories of food (almost all grain) to
produce one calorie of beef, pork or chicken, and the
world's production of meat has increased fivefold since
1950. We now get through five billion hoofed animals and
fourteen billion poultry a year, and it takes slightly over
a third of all our grain to feed them.

Then there's the heat. The most visible cause of the fall in
world grain production -- from 2.68 billion tonnes in 2004
to 2.38 billion tonnes last year and a predicted 1.98
billion tonnes this year -- is droughts, but there are
strong suspicions that these droughts are related to climate
change.

Moreover, beyond a certain point hotter temperatures
directly reduce grain yields. Current estimates suggest that
the yield of the main grain crops drops ten percent, on
average, for every one degree Celsius that the mean
temperature exceeds the optimum for that crop during the
growing season. Which may be why the average corn yield in
the US reached a record 8.4 tonnes per hectare in 1994, and
has since fallen back significantly.

Finally, biofuels. The idea is elegant: the carbon dioxide
absorbed when the crops are grown exactly equals the carbon
dioxide released when the fuel refined from those crops is
burned, so the whole process is carbon-neutral. And it
would be fine if the land used to grow this biomass was land
that had no alternative use, but that is rarely the case.

In South-East Asia, the main source of biofuels is oil
palms, which are mostly grown on cleared rainforest. In the
United States, a "corn rush" has been unleashed by
government subsidies for ethanol, and so many ethanol plants
are planned or already in existence in Iowa that they could
absorb the state's entire crop of corn (maize, mealies). In
effect, food is being turned into fuel -- and the amount of
ethanol needed to fill a big four-wheel-drive SUV just once
uses enough grain to feed one person for an entire year.

There is a hidden buffer in the system, in the sense that
some of the grain now fed to animals could be diverted to
feed people directly in an emergency. On the other hand,
the downward trend in grain production will only accelerate
if it is directly related to global warming. And the
fashion for biofuels is making a bad situation worse.

It's only in the past couple of centuries that a growing
number of countries have been able to stop worrying about
whether there will be enough food at the end of the harvest
to make it through to next year. The Golden Age may not last
much longer.

A&P Anatomy And Physiology
PART 2 of 11
The Make Up Of Your Body And How It Functions

I love the idea how police are trained to detect counterfeit
money. They are taught to recognize it by spending the vast
majority of their time seeing and feeling the legal bills.
Once they become familiar with the good ones, they are
innocently introduced to the counterfeit bills. These are
now easy to spot. The student is now confidently recognizing
the real ones and the fake ones stand out. Why is this
important? How can you fix something if you don't know what
it looks like or how it is supposed to function?

Learn the truth about your body. What it's all about
(anatomy). How it's meant to function (physiology). Once you
put this information together, it will then be much easier
to recognize "ill" or negative effects. Your corrective
action will present itself. Be confident in its functions.

In the vast majority of people, the vital organs are of
similar size. They are definitely of similar actions or
behaviors. So consider yourself normal and learn to use this
information. It can make your life either very, very good or
very bad. The choice is yours and no one else's. So often we
blame others for our results. But in our bodies, the only
person who can possibly be responsible is each individual.
No one forces you to drink a super sugar-loaded drinks or
eat a scoop of high salt content fries. Someone may cajole
or shame you, but you do the swallowing. Let me encourage
you to at least become aware of this "distinction".

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Seek Peace First - To Ensure Survival . . .

According to our Cover Story we no longer produce enough
food to feed us each year, our inventories have fallen to a
57 day safety factor - much less than is considered safe,
and we turn up to 30 percent of our food into animals. On
top of that we are now using our food growing lands to grow
crops for ethanol to fuel our vehicles. In addition to all
this our population is growing by millions a year and with
global warming our food producing land area is reducing.
See this link for information on irreversible global
warming -

Not a pretty picture is it? Some of you think I am an
alarmist. I don’t think I am. I just don’t think our
governments will be giving you this information because they
don’t want you to panic. Remember they want the power and
the money and they don’t much care about you or your family.

Let’s say our governments aren’t telling us. What does that
mean?

It means that in ignorance you will be led to the brink of
extinction, going happily all the way because you trust your
government to solve all the problems we are facing. It is
exactly like the Jewish people from all over Europe being
led to the “showers” trusting that is what they were, during
the Second World War. Little do you realize it is our
governments who caused the problem in the first place and
they have no clue as to how to stop it, and even less will.

So long as money rules the world, then so long shall we
suffer the unreasonable thinking of man. One day man’s
motivation will become survival and then only will it take
priority over money. That day, however, will be far too late
and it will come only when the condition is so obvious the
governments can no longer hide the truth from the people.

Of course, you certainly do not have to believe me. I am a
person of no consequence so why would you believe me.
Nonetheless I shall keep writing for those of you who will
listen.

Remember, peace is your responsibility and it is you who
must work at it. Probably the single most important thing
you can do for you and your family is to find a way to peace
of mind, stillness, being calm. When you do that you have
great strength with which you can lead your family and be an
example to your neighbors. Peace comes from within and has
to be worked on before one finds the formula.

prosperity within your own life.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

On the Cuff: Why do we say that something purchases and
charged is put "on the cuff"?

Because it was once the custom of waiters in public houses
to keep a record of what was ordered on the cuffs of their
shirts. for this reason, a diner who wished to have his meal
charged would jocularly suggest that the amount due be put
"on the cuff" also.

If Men Ran The World

Breaking up would be a lot easier. A smack to the butt and a
"Nice hustle, you'll get 'em next time" would pretty much do
it.

Valentine's Day would be moved to February 29th, so it would
only occur on Leap years.

On Groundhog Day, if you saw your shadow, you'd get the day
off to go drinking. Mother's Day too. St. Patrick's Day,
however, would remain exactly the same, but it would be
celebrated every month.

Garbage would take itself out.

The only show opposite "Monday Night Football" would be
"Monday Night Football from a Different Camera Angle".

Instead of "beer-belly", you'd get "beer-biceps".

Tanks would be far easier to rent.
