ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What are the Masons?
Masons belong to the fraternity of Freemasonry, the largest
and oldest fraternity in the world. According to R. Stephen
Doan's 1993 article, "Origins of Freemasonry," the
fraternity dates back to the Middle Ages when stonemasons
met in lodges to pass on to each other the architectural
secrets needed to build Gothic cathedrals. Gothic
architecture was innovative, relying on counterbalanced
forces to make the building stand. This use of
counterbalance permitted architects to build high (sometimes
as high as forty stories). The world had seen nothing like
it before. Stonemasons naturally wanted to keep their
secrets to themselves to cut down on competition. The best
way for master stonemasons to do this was to form a
brotherhood and regulate who was made an apprentice of the
trade. They transmitted their techniques orally and were
careful not to leave any drawings or writings around.
Because of the possibility of accident or death of members
of their craft, the masons provided for charity for
distressed members.
So how did the fraternity of stonemasons become the
fraternity of secretive men in funny hats?
The Mason's philosophy emphasized brotherly love, charity,
truth, temperance, fortitude, prudence, and justice. These
are good things. So later, when the Gothic cathedral
business wasn't so good, the Masons survived and opened
their ranks to people who were not stonemasons. They began
to call themselves "free and accepted masons," or
freemasons. At present, there are about 4.75 million members
worldwide, mostly in the US and other English-speaking
countries. Modern freemasonry ideals include fellowship,
religious toleration, and political compromise. The Masons
still enjoy secrecy and have complex systems of rites and
degrees, subsidiary organizations for women and children,
and lodges noted for their parades and fraternal gatherings.

Ocean Dead Zones
U.N.: Ocean 'dead zones' increasing fast
Experts estimate 200 worldwide, up from 149 just two years
ago
MSNBC News Services
NAIROBI, Kenya - The number of “dead zones” in the world’s
oceans may have increased by a third in just two years,
threatening fish stocks and the people who depend on them,
the U.N. Environment Program said on Thursday.
Fertilizers, sewage, fossil fuel burning and other
pollutants have led to a doubling in the number of
oxygen-deficient coastal areas every decade since the 1960s.
Now experts estimate there are 200 dead zones, compared with
149 two years ago.
“Some successes are being scored but in other areas -- like
sewage, nutrients from fertilizer run off, animal wastes and
atmospheric pollution; sediment mobilization and marine
litter -- the problems are intensifying,” UNEP Executive
Director Achim Steiner said in a statement.
The damage is caused by explosive blooms of tiny plants
known as phytoplankton, which die and sink to the bottom,
and then are eaten by bacteria which use up the oxygen in
the water. Those blooms are triggered by too many nutrients
— particularly phosphorous and nitrogen.
The first dead zones were found in northern latitudes like
the Chesapeake Bay on the U.S. East Coast and the
Scandinavian fjords.
Global sightings
Today, the best known is in the Gulf of Mexico, where
fertilizers and other algae-multiplying nutrients are dumped
by the Mississippi River.
Newly observed dead zones include ones in:
• Archipelago Sea, Finland
• Fosu Lagoon, Ghana
• Pearl River Estuary and Changjiang River, China
• Mersey Estuary, United Kingdom
• Elefsis Bay, Greece
• Paracas Bay, Peru
• Mondego River, Portugal
• Montevideo Bay, Uruguay
• Western Indian Shelf.
The UNEP, which is based in Nairobi, said that experts warn
“these areas are fast becoming major threats to fish stocks
and thus to the people who depend upon fisheries for food
and livelihoods.”
Fertilizer-based nitrogen runoff into rivers and the seas
are expected to rise globally by 14 percent by 2030 when
compared with the mid 1990s, UNEP stated.
The full list is expected to be published early next year,
but the preliminary findings were released on Thursday at an
international marine pollution conference in Beijing, China,
that gathered delegates from more than 100 nations.
Coral reefs and pollution
The meeting also heard some good news from scientists
studying the recovery rates of coral reefs damaged by
bleaching in the late 1990s by high sea temperatures.
Coral reefs get bleached when warm water forces out tiny
algae that live in the coral, providing nutrients and giving
reefs their vivid colors. Without the algae, corals whiten
and eventually die.
“The new studies indicate healthy ecosystems exposed to
minimal contamination are likely to recover and survive
better than those stressed by pollution, dredging and other
human-made impacts,” Steiner said.
UNEP said the overall findings were given even more urgency
by new modeling that shows up to 90 percent of the world’s
tropical coasts may be developed by 2030.
“Climate change, and the need to build resilience into
habitats and ecosystems so they can cope with the
anticipated increase in temperatures likely to come, now
represents a further urgent reason to act,” Steiner added
Thursday’s meeting came just over two weeks before the start
of global warming talks under the U.N. Framework Convention
on Climate Change due to begin in Nairobi on Nov. 6.
Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

A&P Anatomy And Physiology
PART 7 of 11
The Make Up Of Your Body And How It Functions
Let's review the definition of anatomy and physiology and
then use the heart as an example. ANATOMY is the study,
classification, and description of structures and organs of
the body. I think that's pretty well explained...cell to
tissue to organ to system to body. PHYSIOLOGY is the study
and process of the function of the human. It is the study of
the physical and chemical processes involved in the
functioning of the living organisms and their component
parts.
We know that the heart is a huge muscle, as is your biceps
muscle in your upper arm. Same tissue, but their FUNCTIONS
are VERY different! Let's suppose you are to cut out 3/4 of
your biceps muscle because it was diseased and becoming
necrotic (dying tissue). You would have a big hollow in your
arm, but life would continue. Do the same 3/4 "reduction" in
your heart (organ) and life COULD not continue! So the
function of any cell and its larger group, is vitally
important. And of course each organ has its own specific,
specialized and non-duplicable function. Obviously with ten
different systems working simultaneously in your body, there
is a lot of activity. And most of it done without any
knowledge or help on your part. Your heart beats. Your lungs
expand and contract automatically. They exchange blood with
oxygen for blood without oxygen. Your kidneys are constantly
filtering. Your digestive tract is handling input and output
of nutrients. Your skin is protecting you and holding you
together. Your bones are holding you upright and your brain
is computing millions of messages. You are a living miracle!
And this list isn't anywhere near complete! I have purposely
left out any reference to the other, invisible mechanisms of
your body. The central nervous system refers to the brain,
spinal cord, and spinal nerves. These serve as the main
"processing center" for the whole nervous system. They
control all the workings of the body. This is the operating
system. For now we will focus on the make up and functions of
your body.
Nothing so far has been said about maintaining this perfect
"machine". It does require maintenance. Nothing runs
forever. Systems break down by lack of one or more deficits.
The basic cell can be impaired by a number of factors. In a
very simplistic way, any food that the cell can't use or is
harmful hinders its health maintenance. All systems are
required to work in harmony and efficiency. It is called
dis-ease. Your body has supplied the cells, and the systems
and the functions. It's up to you to supply the maintenance
factors.

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.

Multi Topics Today!
Our Title Article today shows us yet one more area where man
is killing off natural habitat. In our pursuit of money we
wash fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides into our rivers
which eventually get to our oceans.
The chemical companies create these products so they can
make money by selling to the farmers. The farmers buy and
use them to get more yield from their crops so they can sell
more product and make more money. The rains come and slowly
yet inexorably wash these chemicals into our rivers which
eventually find their way to the oceans of the world. All
for the sake of a dollar we do these things.
I wonder if a dollar will buy us a slow down in global
warming? I wonder if a dollar can turn deserts into arable
land? I wonder if a dollar can produce water where there is
none, food when we don’t have enough or peace rather than
war?

On another topic folks this is the weekend where you get to
sleep in an extra hour on Sunday. We change our clocks back
an hour for those of you who live where you have Daylight
Saving Time. I always look forward to that day. My head says
I finally get that hour of sleep I lost in the spring. But
remember you might be late for some appointment if you are
not aware.
A safety reminder
Many fire departments encourage people to change the battery
in the smoke detector when they change their clocks because
Daylight Saving Time provides a convenient reminder. "A
working smoke detector more than doubles a person's chances
of surviving a home fire," says William McNabb of the Troy
Fire Department in Michigan. More than 90 percent of homes
in the United States have smoke detectors, but one-third are
estimated to have dead or missing batteries.
It has been a while since I put thePEBBLE into an html
format. Since I began I have tweaked and improved a little
here and there and I think I’m finally catching on to the
method. I hope you enjoy it. Certainly it is more colorful
and likely a touch easier to navigate.
Have a great weekend folks. See you Monday, an hour later!

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Quibble: Why do we call a petty argument over a minor point
"quibbling"?
The word comes from the Latin quibus. This is the dative and
ablative of qui, meaning "who" or "which" - and it was used
so much in legal documents and fought over to such an extent
by lawyers that it gave us the term "quibble".
