What silent screen star spent years assembling an elaborate
miniature castle?
Colleen Moore, a silent screen star of the 1920s (bigger
than Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford in her time), was
always fascinated by dolls and doll houses. As one of the
most popular actresses in Hollywood, she had the resources
to produce her dream house: a miniature "Enchanted Castle"
of fantastic proportions. Moore hired more than 700 skilled
craftsmen to help with the fairytale project, including
surgical instrument lighting specialists, leading interior
designers, Hollywood set designers, architects, Beverly
Hills jewelers, and Chinese jade craftsmen. The price tag
for this 10 X 8 X 7 foot palace containing over 2000
miniatures and decorated with real jade, ivory, gold, mother
of pearl, diamonds, quartz, and precious stones, was nearly
$500,000 (equivalent to nearly six million today). The house
has running water, circulated with a centrifugal pump. There
are gilded fixtures with working spigots, fountains, and
alabaster pools. Electric bulbs the size of a grain of wheat
were made by the Chicago Miniature Lamp Company, a
manufacturer of lighting products for surgical instruments.
Priceless and rare objet d'art, including artifacts
thousands of years old, decorate the house. In the library,
Moore has 65 miniature books on display that were printed in
the 18th century, along with the world's smallest Bible,
printed in 1840. Moore also commissioned one-inch square
leather-bound books and asked prominent writers of the
mid-century to record their thoughts in them. Just a
sampling of the authors who complied include Noel Coward,
Edgar Rice Burroughs, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Randolph
Hearst, Arthur Conan Doyle, Sinclair Lewis, Irving Stone and
John Steinbeck. The library's "autograph book" contains the
signatures of six US Presidents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince
Philip, The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Winston Churchill,
Charles DeGaulle, General Douglas MacArthur, Frank Lloyd
Wright, Henry Ford, Pablo Picasso and many others.
Where is the Enchanted Castle now?
If you'd like to see it, the castle is on permanent display
at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

Some People Just Don't Understand!
A new young bride calls her mother in tears. She sobs,
"Robert doesn't appreciate what I do for him."
"Now, now," her mother comforted, "I am sure it was
all just a misunderstanding."
"No, mother," the young woman laments. "I bought a
frozen turkey loaf and he yelled at me about the price."
"Well, that is being miserly," the mother agreed,
"Those turkey rolls are only a few dollars."
"No, mother it wasn't the price of the turkey roll, it
was the airplane ticket."
"Airplane ticket.... What did you need an airplane
ticket for?"
"Well mother, when I went to fix it, I looked at the
directions on the back and it said, 'PREPARE FROM
A FROZEN STATE,' so I flew to Alaska."
Boy! I think I'd be a little choked if my wife did this,
too. But it leads us into our point for this article - Some
People Just Don't Understand!
That's what happens when people think of success, or
becoming successful. They don't understand that you
must be committed to what you are doing or going to do.
Without that commitment success is rare, and people
become frustrated, then quit. Doing this begins to form
a pattern and success forever eludes them.
Some folks think that success is their right. It is. Just as
it is the right for the sparrow to live. Food is provided in
abundance everywhere, but the sparrow must go get it.
The same with your success. It is there, ready for you
to have it, but you must do what is necessary to bring
it into realization. That takes commitment and without
it there shall be no success.
I once read that if you want to increase your rate of
success, then double your failure rate. The author of
that statement possessed the wisdom of the ages.
Success is impossible without failing many times. Each
failure is to bring about refinements in what you are
doing until, one day, success visits you in abundance.
So, fret not at failure. Be grateful for it, for from it
comes the seeds for the next step and the next, until one
day you will have accomplished what you wanted. The
two keys are commitment and persistence.

The Make Up Of Your Body And How It Functions
It all sounds very difficult, and confusing AND
time-consuming! However, once you see how easy it is to
provide your body with these positive factors and eliminate
harmful or negative ones, it's not so complicated.
Here is an extremely simplistic explanation. In an aging
condition, nothing unusual happens. Your body accepts what
comes its way without trying to make any changes to protect
you from them. They are gradual. They are normal. It is
vitally important to understand that these are normal
changes. Now along comes a degenerative condition: diabetes,
osteoporosis, etc. The body doesn’t like those. This is
called oxidative stress. This is not normal and your body
tries to protect you from it. It sets up a response to try
and get rid of the intruders. These are labeled as free
radicals. This response is called the “inflammatory
response”. And it is the body’s first response by bringing
in extra fluid (containing all sorts of healthful
ingredients) to wash out these free radicals. Most likely
you won’t even know this is going on till years later. But
by this action, the body is trying to neutralize the
intruders with its everyday supply of antioxidants, one of
the main healthful ingredients. That is the only way to
render them harmless. It all seems to come down to getting
rid of free radicals from your body. How can you do that,
but filling your body with antioxidants: simple but true.
But up till now you have probably taken your body for
granted. It may be running on "empty": your everyday supply
isn't adequate any longer. You probably didn't realise that
just your (external) home, you body needs regular
maintenance or a breakdown will occur.

Short and Sweet Today!
You are only going to get a perfunctory perspective today. I
went out and worked 10 hours outside today in -5C, a bitter
wind and six inches of snow. Now some guys do that all the
time, but not me. I haven’t done work like that for well
over a year.
Sitting in front of this computer may look like I’m working
but I never get the exercise I got today.
I see there are companies out there now competing even
harder for our teen agers money. They are producing these so
called energy drinks and the teens are buying it like crazy.
So much so the medical community has become concerned about
the effects of these drinks. Many contain caffeine, to much,
and lots and lots of sugar. Some teens have even tried to
get a buzz by overdosing, requiring hospitalization.
On a happier not it has been found that green vegetables,
two or three servings a day will increase a senior’s mental
agility and memory by as much as 40 percent. Boy, that’s
what I need.
