It does. Recent research, published in the October 10, 2003
edition of the journal Science, shows that the pain of rejection
also registers in the same part of the brain as physical pain.
A broken heart, it appears, really does HURT.
How did scientists test that?
Researchers created a computer game in which subjects were
made to believe they were playing with two other players. At
some point, the two other players rejected the test subject and
excluded him from the game. The rejection caused distress in
the test subjects that researchers could see with brain imaging.

Just a Little Willingness to Love...

What is love? A ticklish sensation around the heart that can't
be scratched? Something I earn when I do things right?
Something I give to get something back? My definition is that
love is a willingness to choose to see and respond to the best
in another person, even when they are not experiencing or
expressing it themselves at the moment. This gives you the
opportunity to be loving, no matter what the other is doing!
It also requires that you decide to give up petty (and
not-so-petty) judgments of others and replace that with the
willingness to see them in their best light. Quite a tall
order!
Now, how do you recognize love in your life? Do you have a
well-defined way of recognizing love coming to you? Is it "it
has to look, sound, feel like this or it isn't love"? Or, are
you open to seeing, hearing and feeling love in many forms?
You can miss a lot of love in your life if you have a narrow,
restricting perception of which form is acceptable to you.
How do you express love in your life? Familiar quotes worthy
of bringing into application are "Work is love made visible."
"Works, not words, are proof of love." and "Service is nothing
more than love in work clothes." Consider your expressions of
love. Do your words match your actions? Do you say you'll do
something for another but "forget" regularly? Are you willing
to match your walk with your talk? It seems to me to be a
waste of energy to spend much valuable time talking about what
I'm going to do, or what I think I should do, when I could be
using that time for doing it!
Love also looks a lot like time. When we say we love someone,
or, for that matter, that we love to do something, the proof
is often in the time we spend with the person or the time we
spend doing the activity, isn't it? When I was seeing many
couples in my counselling practice, I would often hear the
pain as one partner expressed their loneliness, saying, "You
do not spend time with me." The demonstration of love means
spending time with those you say you love, doesn't it? We've
all seen or heard stories about parents who were too busy and
missed their children's childhoods. Regretting it later is not
nearly as effective as doing it now!
Remember, too, that you cannot give a gift you do not have. Be
loving to yourself. Spend time with yourself. Know what you
enjoy and do it! It is also important to have good
communication skills so that you can communicate to others
clearly when you think they are being unloving to you. I think
it is unloving to allow others to be unloving to you. We are
responsible for teaching people how to treat us! If you do not
say anything, you are telling them it is all right with you.
IMPORTANT: If love makes the world go round, we'd better do
our bit because the world is turning at 2,000 miles per hour,
and we'd get quite a jolt if it stopped.

Or Someone Else's? Recognizing
A Major Stressor In Your Life

Another of my friends, Paul, recently lost his
job...one he never liked. He was a computer
programmer. This is all he THINKS he knows. His
biggest roadblock in his job search is knowing
what he really wants to do. He is now 50 years
old, and to get him to look at himself deeper for
relevant talents is almost impossible. I think he
is fearful of what he might find, thinking he
can't cope, but 50 is young nowadays. I have
taught many students in their 50's and they are
wonderful: willing to learn and grateful! Because
of all of Paul's lack of direction, he is
depressed and without no energy. But he loves
being home, doing things there. Financially,
because of earlier good habits and care, his
family has few debts.
No one says you have to work at things you don't
like. Once you find the kind of work you like, you
will work much quicker, with more positive
outcomes, more effectively. Your skills will match
your talents and your attitude will match the
outcomes! Can you picture doing something you
really care about? You smile. You feel great. Your
feel and act confidently! "Failures" are just
things you need to redo.nothing major..certainly
not a reason to quit. And people treat you so
differently! So please find the yellow pages (or
whatever they are called now.) and look at the
index at the very back. It has all the listings by
topic...a perfect search tool! You will dismiss
99.9% of the entries, but what if you find two
possible career links. Wouldn't that be worth the
time and the hassle? Can you find a couple that
match your desires and talents? DON'T DO anything.
Just allow your mind to drift to possibilities and
visions and dreams.
Ask yourself "What if I could do that... Would I
be happy doing that?" And for goodness sake don't
give one thought to what other people might think!
Who cares! This is such a needless roadblock! You
aren't them...and they aren't you and neither of
you is responsible for each other. YOUR journey
begins with one thought, which leads to one choice
which leads to one step, which leads to one
change...and like a pebble thrown into the Pacific
ocean, life changes.

were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each

"Come and get me Tim" Sharon sent out the
message.
To her surprise, Tim refused. He suggested to
her that she stay the course, that she be alone
tonight and just think about all that has
happened. "I will see you tomorrow at the
restaurant, how's that?"
"But I want to see you now, Tim."
"Sharon, you must trust me. It is always the
teacher who knows what the student needs and when
the student is ready. Don't pout or be angry. It
is far better for you that you digest all that has
happened today. It will make growth easier for
you."
"But I want to see you, hug you, kiss you. I
want you."
"I know, Sharon. I want you too. However, we
will see each other tomorrow. You have enough on
your plate already. By the way, I am glad you had
a successful talk with your folks, and I am glad
they will let us see one another and I am glad
they want to see me. All will be well."
"Oh, all right" Sharon sent out the thought,
obviously quite disappointed.
Tim knew Sharon had pretty much received all
she asked for at home. She was rarely refused and
this refusal by him was a bit of a surprise. She
would have to learn to take that, because Tim, in
order to teach her higher law, would have to stay
away from her from time to time in order to permit
her mind to work out some of the things she
learns. He actually wanted to be with her too.
However, he had a sense that he should cool it for
a bit. Today was one intense day and he did not
know if he could go through that again so soon.
He walked into the kitchen and sat down with
his folks and had a coffee. Billy Hendricks and
Tom were out with some of their buddies.
"So, my boy! How are you making out with this
new filly?" Sam winked at him.
"Just fine Dad. I'm having a problem with my
emotions. So is Sharon. But I think I can handle
it."
"Son, emotions in youth are intense. Your
Mother and I can remember them from our youth. It
is quite fine to have them, in fact it is
beautiful, but control is the order of the day. I
know it seems natural to carry through with the
things you want to do but you will know when the
time is right. Controlling yourself now will only
make things better in your future, Sharon's too.
It doesn't seem like that now, but it will. All
you need do is ask your sister. She'll tell you,
or Mazunta."
"Thanks Dad, I think I will. In fact I'm going
to go down there right now and see. Do you guys
want to come along?"
"No thanks Tim. This is your night. You go
ahead."
Tim did go to visit Eloise and Mazunta. They
did talk about sex before marriage and what
emotions they went through. They spoke of the
intense passion from time to time and the need for
one another, but they wanted to wait until they
were wed, at least in the eyes of the village.
That way they would do the acceptable thing, and
the villagers would admire their example. Mazunta
was after all the village leader and had to watch
what he did. Then Eloise added that she, too,
found the reward for waiting to be worth the wait.
Tim agreed. Following their talk he was off back
home.
"Oh I want you" Sharon said as she sat down in
the booth across from him. She took his hand and
didn't let it go. They were again early because
she skipped a class. "Let's not get a drink. Let's
go somewhere."
Tim knew she wanted to be together physically.
He did too.
They walked outside and began their journey
toward her house, as they did the day before. Then
in the flash of an eye they vanished.
Tim brought them to Miguele's and Abetta's
place in Matto Grosso. As it happened Romano and
Oomano were there visiting.
"Hi Tim. How are you?" Abetta, a plump well
rounded woman came running over to him and gave
him a hug and a kiss. "Who is this lovely girl,
Tim? She is beautiful" she spoke in her broken
english.
"Abetta, this is Sharon. She is a school chum
of mine. That is to say she is a couple years
behind me but from the same school. We're going
out together. I thought we would come to visit and
see how you folks are doing."
"Oh, Mister Tim, you know that everything is
always all right. Since we learn higher law the
only thing wrong is that Papa is always under my
feet." Abetta laughed as she spoke.
