ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What types of vessels are named after cities?

If you see a ship named after a US city, it is most likely a
cruiser. Cruisers are traditionally named after cities, with
the exception of very large cruisers, which may be named
after US territories. Some more modern cruisers are named
after famous battles.

What are US destroyers named after?

They're named after famous naval leaders and heroes.

One Wrong Might Make You Wary!
by Ken Darby

While ferrying workers back and forth from our offshore
oil rig, the helicopter I was on lost power and went down.
Fortunately, it landed safely in a lake. Struggling to get
out, one man tore off his seat belt, inflated his life vest
and jerked open the exit door.

"Don't jump!" the pilot called out. "This thing is
supposed to float!"

As the man leapt from the helicopter into the lake, he
yelled back, "Yeah, and it's supposed to fly too!"

I know just how the man feels, although he might be
jumping to conclusions.

This story puts me back to days when I had a real estate
business. My partner and I used to buy and sell properties
all over the U.S, in England and in India. The properties
were all commercial in nature, apartment houses, warehouses,
condominiums etc.

When we first began we were naive. We found we got caught
many times buying a property that was not wholly what the
owner or his realtor said it was. Fortunately we never really
got stung too bad, but several bad buys soon made us wary.

We used to look at properties and listen to the realtor and the
owner. Then, when they did not think we were around we
would slip back and speak to caretakers, renters and people
in a complex. Often we found information from these people
that did not properly compare with what the owner or his
realtor were telling us. When that happened we simply
dropped the deal then and there.

When you are 2500 miles away from your investment, things
have to go right. If you make a bad buy it is too expensive to
fix. Adopting this method we soon found that we usually had
to look at up to fifteen properties before we found one where
the stories of the owner, realtor, caretaker and residents all
appeared the same. Then we purchased. Every time we did
we had a winner, and made money. We then made that
"system" a buying pattern.

So, when we looked at a property we looked for stories that
didn't match. When we found one, just one, we, like the man
in the helicopter, jumped.

I have found that in life's situations there are many times
and things that are like that. If there is one thing wrong that
you discover, even with things you are doing yourself, you
can bet there are at least another nine things wrong. It might
be time to jump.

One Wrong Might Make You Wary!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Your Liver: Understanding Its Functions
And Your Role In Maintaining Its Health
PART 2 of 13

The liver is made up of many, many lobes of different
sizes. Think of it as the workings of a Swiss clock.
Many processes are constantly working harmoniously
together in small "factories"". Generally we talk about
the liver as "liver", but we are really describing
its activities or functions. Research has discovered
that it participates in over 500 functions! They can be
grouped together as metabolism, storage, filtration or
excretion. We won't go into great detail with these,
but serious students should get reputable books and
learn more.

Some of these "broad" functions include: 1) converting
nutrients derived from food into essential blood
components. 2) Storing vitamins and minerals.
3) Regulating blood clotting. 4) Producing proteins and
enzymes. 5) Maintaining hormone balances. 6)
Metabolizing and detoxifying substances that would
otherwise be harmful to the body. 7) Makes factors that
help the human immune system fight infection. 8)
Removes bacteria from the blood. 9) Makes bile which is
essential for digestion.

In other words, it stores nutrients, sugars, fats, and
vitamins that you body needs to function. It removes or
neutralizes toxins or poisons from the blood such as
alcohol and other poisons. It produces immune agents to
control infection and removes germs and bacteria from
the blood. It makes proteins that regulate blood
clotting and produces bile to help absorb fats
and fat-soluble vitamins. Again, you cannot live
without a functioning liver. If you study this list
carefully, you will see a tremendous workload
for a relatively small part of your body.

So in working backwards as to what the liver does, and
thinking about the things that WON'T get done if the
liver is damaged or not functioning properly, you can
see that many body systems are going to be in serious
trouble.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"You know Sharon we should get you home. It is
past your supper time. Your folks will be
worried."

Sharon looked at the time "Oh, my, I had no
idea it was that time. Yes we must go now. Thank
you very much for such a wonderful supper." She
rose to leave.

"You are welcome Sharon. Please come visit us
again" Abetta replied.

Having said their good byes, Tim took Sharon's
hand and the couple vanished.

They reappeared about a block from Sharon's
house.

"Tim I must get back home. Thank you for the
trip. Those are really nice folks. I want to go
see them again." They were walking toward her
home.

Tim, now knowing it was okay to see Sharon,
walked with her. As they approached her house Tim
could see her father at the front room window
looking for her.

They walked up the sidewalk and around to the
back of the house to the door Sharon usually used.
When no one was looking he gave her a quick kiss
on the lips and said good bye. She whispered "I
love you" and disappeared into the house.

Tim turned and began to walk home.

Once inside Sharon said "Hi Mom! I'm home.
Sorry I'm late. I didn't mean to be away without
letting you know. It just happened." She was
bouncing up the steps into the kitchen from her
back door landing.

"We were worried young lady. Where were you?
You don't usually miss supper." Her father was
more than a little agitated. Sharon could sense
it.

She remembered the lesson of last night. She
took a deep breath and walked over to the table.
That gave her enough time to gather her thoughts,
get calm and present her story to her folks.

"Mom, I've eaten supper. Tim took me to some
friends in South America, a city called Matto
Grosso. There I met Mr. and Mrs. Pietro and their
daughters Riata and Oomano and Oomano's husband,
Romano. They are wonderful people. Mrs. Pietro
cooked up some fried chicken that was fantastic."

"Sharon. You're 18 years old. You know we
won't believe a story like that. No one can go to
South America and back in that time even in the
world's fastest plane. Don't go giving us
stories." Her father was even more agitated by
this obvious departure from reality, at least his
reality.

Calmly Sharon responded. "Daddy, I knew you
would react this way. I knew you would not believe
me, and that is okay. What I told you is exactly
what happened. It was wonderful. There is
something else too."

"Yeah! Now what?" Her father reacted testily.

"Daddy, does a man hurt if he gets sexually
excited and does not complete the act?"

You could have heard a piece of dust fall.
That was a bombshell no one expected. No one said
anything for a good thirty seconds.

It must have been the shock that was needed.
Sharon's father now spoke calmly and deliberately.
His words were carefully chosen and purposeful.

All the images of his youth had run through
his mind. He remembered all the things he had done
in those times when he experienced the same thing.
He had been one who had told the girl he was with
that she had an obligation to satisfy his needs,
after all she was the cause. He put his head in
his hands as if he were about to realize a
horrible dream come true.

"Yes, Sharon. It happens to all men but is
especially true of young men in new relationships.
Did that Henry kid try to tell you that you were
responsible? That you had to have sex with him?"

"No, Daddy. Quite the opposite. I wanted sex,
but he refused. He avoided any close encounters.
His friends in Matto Grosso told me what happens.
Oomano is a newlywed and she and her husband
Romano came right out and spoke the truth to both
of us. I had no idea. Tim has experienced that and
I had no idea. He says he does not want to get
that close again. He says that not only does it
hurt him but if our relationship is going to be a
good one it has to be based on much more than sex
or a thrill for a moment. He said he has too much
respect for me and my family to do that and that
the more clear my conscience is when speaking with
you the better it is for me. So he won't do it."

There was an obvious relief in the eyes of her
father and her mother. The topic had changed the
mood in the household completely. No longer were
they angry about her being late for supper. No
longer were they agitated over her being out with
that Henry boy. No longer were they looking for a
fight. Sharon's answer threw them completely.
