How come paper cuts hurt so much?
Paper cuts are so tiny that they're practically invisible. Yet
they hurt more than larger and deeper cuts. Why? It's
primarily because sensory nerve endings are located close
to the skin surface and there are more nerve endings in the
hands than in most other parts of the body.

Tip And Tidbits
Here is an excerpt from eMarketer Daily.
Congressional Measures Combat Online Piracy, Spyware
"We must not let new Internet technology become a haven
for criminals," Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), one of the
co-authors of The Piracy Deterrence and Education Act, told
the Washington Post. The measures target the practice of
file sharing, which the music industry says has lead to a
$2 billion dollar decline in yearly CD sales since 2000. The
House Judiciary Committee approved the bill, clearing it for
debate in the full House. Earlier in the day, that same
committee had approved a measure making it a crime to
surreptitiously place spyware on people's computers.

The Price of Fun
Price cuts in Britain by Sony and Microsoft have led to
sales increases of their PlayStation 2 and Xbox game
systems. Competing for the third largest game market in the
world (after the US and Japan), the companies dropped the
prices for the systems by 25% and 23%, respectively, in
August, pricing them at just under £100 (about $178). The
upshot has been a tripling in the weekly sales of the Xbox
and a doubling of weekly sales of PlayStation 2. The price
of Nintendo's GameCube has not changed, and it continues
to struggle in that market.

Digital Photography Clicking with Consumers
September 10, 2004
At-home printing of digital photos should become nearly
a $10 billion business worldwide by 2008, reports Lyra Research.
Digital cameras are everywhere these days, and though one
of the advantages of digital photography over film is that all the
shots don't have to be developed into prints, thus saving money,
many of them are. A whole lot of them.
According to a new report from Lyra Research, "Consumer
Photo-Printing Market: Where Digital Photos Will Be Printed,"
worldwide revenues from at-home printing of photos captured
by digital cameras will grow from $7.1 billion in 2003 to
$9.9 billion in 2008. That's a compound annual growth rate
(CAGR) of 9%.
"The majority of digital camera photos will continue to be
printed at home, which is good news for ink jet printer and
supplies vendors, because sales of ink cartridges and photo
paper will increase," says Lyra's Robert Palmer.
With home, retail and online photo-printing options, where
consumers choose to print their digital photos now and in the
future is the key issue in this market.
Looking at the overall universe, Lyra Research forecasts that
revenues from photo prints captured with digital cameras will
increase from $6.6 billion in 2002 to $15.1 billion in 2008, a
CAGR of 12%.
Mr. Palmer notes, "As the household penetration of digital
cameras increases, the choices consumers make about where
they conduct photo printing will continue to evolve."
One thing is certain, in the future, as people look back on their
lives, they will no longer see the world in Kodacolor.

Your Liver: Understanding Its Functions
And Your Role In Maintaining Its Health
PART 3 of 13
Let's examine French Fries. In eating some, you ingest
the food including the fat involved in the cooking
process. The potato itself offers very little in the
way of food value, but the chip does offer fat. Your
liver creates this fluid and it is stored in the
gallbladder (which sits just in front of it). The
gallbladder releases bile to help digest fat. If it
doesn' t metabolize it or use all of it, the fat runs
in your blood stream and finds a home in less desirable
place, like the inside walls of arteries.
Bile is a greenish-yellow fluid that is the consistency
of egg whites before they are whipped. This fluid
consists of bile acids (or salts) and waste products,
such as bile pigments. Eventually the bile finds its
way into the small bowel, where more absorption and
digestion takes place.
Did you know that some medications can interfere with
the flow of bile, which can also lead to liver
inflammation? (These include erythromycin, some
oral contraceptives, chlorpromazine, and anabolic
steroids.) So if you are on any of those, do you think
it might be a problem for your bile to work
effectively? Therefore if your bile isn't helping to
break down the fat, can you see how fat "hangs around"?
How do you even begin to figure out if you might have
problems? Many people find this out by accident. They
go for a routine blood test and here comes a completely
unexpected outcome. It might mention "elevated liver
count" or "we need to investigate with some more
tests".
When you read some of the causes, you might recognize
familiar things. You are reading this article BECAUSE
you are interested in health. So chances are that you
may want to pay more attention to the acute causes. The
same symptoms are present for both acute and chronic
conditions, in different degrees of severity. The
difference is in the timing of the arrival of these
symptoms. The diagnosis will be based on many factors,
including a detailed medical history.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Her mother spoke, "Sharon have you had sex
with any man?"
"No, Mom. You know that. I've only gone out
with Tim. He's the only man I've been with."
"And he has not touched you?"
"Come on Mom. Yes he has touched me, and I
him. I want to have sex with him. At my age most
of the girls at school have had sex for years. I
have not. Tim and I love each other. I don't see
what is wrong with it."
"Sharon." Her father spoke calmly. "This young
man appears to have a very responsible attitude
and he appears to have a very high regard for you.
I am impressed with him. I had no idea his
principles and morals were that high. We have been
worried that you might go out with him and become
so involved that you could end up getting
pregnant, then he could tell you to get out of his
life. It now sounds to me like you have met more
of a man than we realize. He is right, Sharon, not
to go through with it. He has more of a sense of
pride in himself than a lot of men. Did he tell
you he was hurting?"
"No Daddy. He said nothing. I found out from
this newlywed couple. They were trying to tell us
to wait, that the wait was well worth it for each
of us. They said it had nothing to do with
religion, it had nothing to do with morals, it had
nothing to do with our families wishes. They said
it had to do with our own inner sense of strength
and pride. That if we refrained then we would be
much happier for it, that self control would make
each of us stronger and that if we gave in to our
emotions it would make us weaker."
"I don't know who these friends are but they
are right, Sharon. Your Mom and I did not wait. We
have had a good marriage, but, in truth, it would
have been better if we had waited. I was not as
strong as your young man. I told your Mother she
had to oblige me because it was her fault I was in
pain. Then once we started it never quite. Today,
I think in the deep recesses of our hearts we
would say that we wished we had never started and
that we had waited until we were married."
"I guess I'm naive about such matters, Daddy.
I want him so much and I thought it was just
natural that we should do this."
"Oh! It's natural all right. That is why so
many do it. Yet if you can control yourself and
wait you will find yourself a much happier person
for the rest of your life. It is one of those
strange phenomena, Sharon, where it seems right,
but there is a better time for it. Thank you for
speaking so openly and frankly with us. It makes
us trust you further. And I want to tell you I am
proud of both you and Tim. I have gained a very
high regard for him because of this conversation.
I want to meet him, soon."
"Thank you Daddy." Sharon rose and went over
to her father and gave him a kiss on the cheek and
a big hug.
The tension was over. There was love in the
house, and relief from the wild imaginings that go
on in a parents head when one knows their daughter
is out with a boyfriend and had not returned at
the normal time. Being a parent is tough at the
age their daughter is sexually mature. In their
own minds they can see all sorts of trouble a
child can get into and the imagination often
brings them to an agitation and frustration that
is impossible to hold back. Good communication is
always the answer. A parent must realize a child
of 18 has a right to lead a life of his or her
own. Tough call.
"Sharon, honey. Why don't you ask Tim over for
supper tomorrow night? I would like to meet a
young man who has that kind of integrity. I don't
think you find them that often. I might have
misjudged the Henry family. I wonder why the
church thinks they are not of God?"
"I will Daddy. Is that okay with you Mom?"
"Yes dear. It sounds to us as if this young
man you found is more of a man than we realized.
May be we were too rash in our first assessments.
If you say the Henry family is a nice family and
that the former police chief and his wife are
friends, and live the same way, then maybe we had
better look into what is happening."
"Oh, thanks Mom." Sharon left the kitchen and
went to her own room.
The first thing she did was to sit on her bed,
close her eyes and think of Tim. When she had him
firmly in mind she thought "My folks want to have
you over for supper tomorrow night. Is that okay
with you?"
It was mere seconds when the thought came
back, "You bet. I think I would enjoy that."
"Good. I'll talk to you later." Sharon then
went out to the kitchen again and informed her
parents that Tim Henry would be over for supper
tomorrow night. He accepted the invitation.
"How do you know? You haven't spoken with him
yet." Her father was a little shocked.
"Daddy. I just went to my room and thought of
Tim. When I had a clear picture in my mind I sent
him my thoughts asking him to supper. In a few
seconds he sent his thoughts back to me saying
yes."
"Sharon, there are some weird things happening
here. I don't know about this."

OK, who stopped payment on my reality check?
-------------------------
A parish priest was being honored at a dinner on the 25th
anniversary of his arrival in that parish. A leading local
politician, who was a member of the congregation, was
chosen to make the presentation and give a little speech
at the dinner, but he was delayed in traffic. Sooo.....the priest
decided to say his own few words while they waited.
"You will understand," he said, "the seal of the confessional,
can never be broken. However, I got my first impressions of
this parish from the first confession I heard here. I can only
hint vaguely about this, but when I came here 25 years ago,
I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place. The very
first chap who entered my confessional told me how he had
stolen a television set and, when stopped by the police, had
almost murdered the officer. Further, he told me he had
embezzled money from his place of business and had an
affair with his boss's wife. I was appalled. But as the days
went on I knew that my people were not all like that, and I had,
indeed come to, a fine parish full of understanding and
loving people."
Just as the priest finished his talk, the politician arrived full
of apologies for being late. He immediately began to
make the presentation and give his talk.
"I'll never forget the first day our parish priest arrived in this
parish," said the politician. "In fact, I had the honor of
being the first one to go to him in confession."
