What famous house was built on the advice of a medium?
The Sarah Winchester house, in San Jose, CA, is a truly
bizarre piece of architecture. Mrs. Winchester, after losing
first a daughter and then her husband to disease, consulted
a medium to find the reason for her terrible luck. The medium
advised her that there was a curse on her family, brought about
by her husband's manufacturing of rifles when he was alive.
To escape the curse, the medium advised, she should move
West and build, and perhaps would live forever. Mrs. Winchester
did just that, using the fortune she had inherited to buy a house
and just keep building - adding on room after room for 36 years.
Each room had 13 windows (the number was considered
spiritual rather than unlucky) and many of the windows contained
precious jewels. Other odd features of the house - intended to
confuse evil spirits - included a staircase that went straight to
a ceiling, doors that open onto two-story drops, a room with
a glass floor, and a room without windows that - once entered -
a person cannot leave without a key. The house contains
160 rooms, 2000 doors, and 10,000 windows, some of which
open onto blank walls. There are also secret passageways.

Yahoo! Finds Its Match
Yahoo! announced on Tuesday that it will buy digital music
"jukebox" company Musicmatch Inc. for about $160 million.
Yahoo! already operates Launch, a service that lets users
listen to streaming music over the Web and rate the songs
they hear, in turn determining which music they will hear in
the future. Unlike Launch, Musicmatch lets its users
download the songs of their choice, meaning Yahoo! is now
competing with Apple, Microsoft and Real Networks in the
digital music business.
Back-to-School Items Not Being Purchased Online
Approximately 40% of online consumers have children
heading for the classroom this year, but only 15% plan to
use or have used the Internet to purchase back-to-school
items, according to the latest Consumer Internet Barometer.
"While online shopping is on the upswing, the overwhelming
majority of parents prefer shopping in traditional retail outlets
when it comes to back-to-school products," says Lynn Franco
of The Conference Board's Consumer Research Center.
Among online consumers with school-age children, 70%
describe themselves as strictly hands-on shoppers who will
only shop and buy back-to-school items in traditional
retail stores.
Judge Pans Penn Porn Law
On Friday, a US District judge in Pennsylvania nullified a
2002 law which required ISPs to block Web sites the state
determined to be distributing child porn. The law came
under assault by free speech advocates because it resulted
in ISPs blocking many sites not related to child porn merely
because they shared an IP address. Judge Jan E. DuBois
noted that "There is little evidence that the act has reduced
the production of child pornography or the child sexual
abuse associated with its creation. On the other hand, there
is an abundance of evidence that implementation of the act
has resulted in massive suppression of speech protected by
the First Amendment." Lawyers for the state had argued that
ISPs could use software that only blocked the offending sites,
but didn't want to spend the money on them.
Viral (Self) Marketing
It seems that the uncertain job market for IT professionals
has led some to a life of cybercrime, if you believe a hidden
message left in the code of a variant of MyDoom. According
to experts at the anti-virus firm Sophos Plc, the writers of the
code for MyDoom-U and MyDoom-V included the message
"We searching 4 work in AV (anti-virus) industry." It's not
clear how serious they are, but so far, no company has
come forward to offer the virus-creators employment.

Your Liver: Understanding Its Functions

Basically these tests will try to determine what part
of your liver's responsibilities is not being carried
out: metabolism, storage, filtration, or excretion. And
the actual results can be measured in normal, higher or
lower levels. But again, please be reminded that you
are one whole "entity" or body. Everything in you
relates to everything else. What affects one part
will have an affect on another. Nothing lives in
isolation.
Relevant questioning will also add to the results.
Often this all pinpoints high risk areas quickly.
Although the lab will do the objective testing of
the sample, a medical practitioner has to interpret
those "findings" and give them some relevant meaning.
A blood sample can show all kinds of chemicals you are
exposed to. Your liver is expected to render them
harmless. (Filter and excrete) This is its natural
role of detoxification. Some of these chemicals are so
toxic that they can cause cancer or central
nervous system problems, even birth defects.
Drug-induced hepatitis involves inflammation of the
liver as caused by medication: drugs. (Liver failure is
a possible but rare complication of drug-induced
hepatitis.)
"Problem drugs" for the liver include the general
anesthetic halothane, methyldopa, isoniazid (used for
the treatment of tuberculosis), methotrexate, and
amiodarone. Here is one you should be recognizing:
drugs that are HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors, which are
also called statins.

This is why I try to get people to always check for
possible side effects and drug interactions. You have
to do your own research and then take action.

snake disappear."
"Did you do that?"
"Yes."
"Why? Were you trying to impress me?"
"No. I merely wanted to show you it is not
necessary to work in order to earn yourself a
living. Would you prefer that instead of a snake
that it be an apple at your feet? Or an orange?"
As Tim was speaking Bob kept looking at the
floor for the succession of fruit Tim produced.
"Do you like fruit Bob?"
"Yes."
"Good. Pick up that orange and peel it."
This was getting pretty confusing for Bob
Smithson. "Am I getting this right? Are you
showing me that if I were to follow what Jesus
says I would be able to produce food for myself
and my family just like this?"
"Don't ask me. Ask Jesus. What is he telling
you in the passage I just had you read?"
"That is what he is telling me. Why would I
not see that?"
"How much time does your church spend on
teaching you to do what Jesus told you to do?"
"None. They say go out and be like Jesus, in
the sense that they want us to be missionaries and
want us to bring more people to church, but they
don't say go and do what Jesus told you to do."
"Have you ever asked why?"
"No, but I can guess."
"Now, I want you to read something else. May I
have the bible?"
Bob handed Tim the bible and he turned to
Matthew 21: verses 21 and 22. "Here, read this and
let me know what Jesus is telling you to do."
Bob took the bible and read. When he was done
he looked up and said, "If I have faith and no
doubts I can do anything, including move
mountains."
"That is right. That is what Jesus says. The
church would have you believe that you can move
'your' mountain. That you cannot literally move
any mountain. Yet I ask again, what is Jesus
saying to you? Is he lying? Or telling the truth?"
"I...I don't know. I never looked at it that
way before."
"Well, then let me tell you this. Sharon and I
were down to South America yesterday, because I
have no doubts about what my Maker within me can
do. Does that make sense to you? Can you see how
it is possible to do that?"
"Do you mean that if you have faith and doubt
not you can see yourself someplace else and it
will happen?"
"Yes, Bob. That is what I mean. But don't ask
me. Ask Jesus."
"Why aren't we taught this?"
"Let's not go there. I am not trying to show
you what the church is up to. All I want you to
see is what Jesus is up to. That is all that is
important to you. It is just as good a question to
ask 'Why didn't I see this?'"
"You're right. It is only important that I
see."
"Now, let me ask you this. Do you any longer
think the church is right about my family? Do you
think we are not of God?"
"No. Not now. It is as plain as day."
"Don't go quitting your day job. There is more
to learn. You will experience a period of euphoria
and then you will have to follow the rules. There
is work involved. Each person must come to his
Maker by themselves. You must make that a choice
and a commitment. If you say you want to do that,
that's terrific, but if you don't follow up with
action, then what good is it? Take the time in the
next little while to think on these things. Then,
if you want to talk, let me know and we'll talk."
"Supper's ready boys" came the call from the
dining room.
Then there was the roar of three kids on the
stairs as they came running up the stairs for
supper.
Tim was formally introduced to Sharon's
brothers and sister, all of whom snickered and
teased as youngsters sometimes do. Sharon and Tim
sat next to each other and occasionally were seen
to be touching each other's arms or legs.
The supper was a roast of beef, mashed
potatoes and a hot vegetable mix. Gravy, wine and
breads were also on the table. The meal was
wonderful, tasty and filling.
"While you were in the kitchen, Harriet and
Sharon, Tim was showing me what his family is all
about. I am amazed at how they use the teachings
of Jesus as the complete basis for their actions.
The church never told us anything like this. The
church has actually been misleading us both about
the Henrys and about true spiritual teachings. They
teach us about Jesus all the time, but no one
shows us how to do what Jesus tells us to do. In
fact they teach us the opposite. Why do you think
that is, Tim?"

I've been spending too much time out of the house lately.
This batching is kinda nice and kinda awful. Oh well. The
daughter-in-law is coming along nicely, although tearfully,
as is the way with heart operations. Mom would like to
be home but this chore is more important.
My political friend keeps wanting to get me involved in
stuff and there are some meetings coming up that will
hopefully lead to good things. More on that later.

Idiot Stories -- Chinese Hide-and-Seek
A Chinese man has been arrested after hiding in a hole for
12 years because he was wanted for stealing $15, the
Legal Daily reported. It said police had searched many
times for the man, identified only as Lu, who allegedly stole
the money from a house in the southern county of Xinyuan
in 1987. During yet another search of his house last month,
however, someone noticed something strange about a closet.
They moved it and found Lu hiding in a three-foot hole he
had dug underneath the closet. The newspaper said he had
used the hole as a hiding place for 12 years, emerging
occasionally at night. Lu will be tried for theft, it said, without
giving any further details.
