TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

What's the difference between an "epidemic" and a "pandemic"?

What is "kismet"?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Where did the word "sandwich" come from?

Sandwiches derive their name from John Montagu, fourth
Earl of Sandwich. This English nobleman loved playing cards,
but hated stopping to eat. So he had his servants put meat
between slices of bread, creating a food that he could eat
while playing.

How did ice cream cones first come into being?

'Twas chance. At the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, an ice cream
vendor ran out of dishes. So he borrowed some waffles from the
waffle vendor next door and served the ice cream in that. Voila - the
ice cream cone was born.

An excerpt from DM News

FTC Sets E-Mail ID Summit for November
Sept. 17, 2004

The Federal Trade Commission will hold an e-mail
authentication summit Nov. 9-10 in Washington, the
agency said.

It is intended to spur the e-mail industry to adopt e-mail
identity standards. The FTC said the two-day conference
would focus on the challenges of implementing a
domain-level identity technology and how such a
standard would affect spam.

The FTC will hold the summit along with the National
Institute of Standards and Technology. A Federal
Registry notice published Sept. 15 requests comments
on 30 questions, including e-mail identity's effect on
spam; potential challenges for Internet service providers
who participate in a standard; and whether an e-mail
authentication system can be rolled out in a
reasonable time.

Comments and requests to participate in the summit
can be e-mailed to the FTC at authenticationsummit@ftc.gov.
The comment period closes Sept. 30.

Microsoft and AOL plan to implement domain-level
e-mail authentication technologies before the end of
the year. Yahoo plans to check incoming e-mail using
DomainKeys, its content-signing technology.

The FTC planned for an authentication summit when it
rejected the idea of a do-not-e-mail list in June. The
commission noted that establishing a secure e-mail identity,
preferably by the e-mail industry, would do more to fight
spam than a registry. If the private market fails to reach an
authentication standard, the FTC said it then would
convene an advisory committee as a step toward
implementing a federal solution. It stressed that such a
step would require congressional action and was not
its preferred route.

Let the Home Electronics Convergence Begin
September 16, 2004

A new survey from Parks Associates indicates that the
walls between the PC and other household electronic
devices are coming down.

According to "Digital Media Adapters and Receivers:
Analysis and Forecasts," a new study by Parks Associates,
over 15% of all Internet households in the US now have
a stereo or TV connected to their home computer.

And those connections are being used.

The study reports that 75% of households with these
PC/CE connections play music on their PC through a
stereo and over 40% have viewed digital photos on
their TV.

Many people thought, and movie studios feared, that the
Internet PC and TV would mainly be used to view pirated
videos. But, according to the study, that's not the case.

Music and imaging applications are much more important
than video to these consumers," says John Barret of Parks
Associates. "People don't need a computer to watch video
on their TV. However, they do need a computer if they
want to view digital photos on their TV."

The study, based on an Internet survey of over 4,000
households, also found that 15% to 20% of all Internet
households would purchase a PC-TV/stereo connector
if costs were less than $100, and the likelihood of
purchase strongly correlated with the use of online
music, video services and offline activities such as
photo editing.

"This is an encouraging sign for home networking
providers," says Mr. Barrett. "Home networks now offer
more value than just sharing printers and Internet
access, and consumers are starting to realize these
benefits."

Supporting the Parks data, the Internet Home Alliance
projected in the beginning of this year that home
network households would represent 16% of all online
households in the US (or 10 million households).

Your Liver: Understanding Its Functions
And Your Role In Maintaining Its Health
PART 10 of 13

Eat when you are hungry. Have raw fruits and vegetables
and drink plenty of water. It washes a lot of the
toxins out. Avoid eating large amounts of
sugar, especially refined sugar, as the liver will be
forced to convert them into fat and cholesterol. Avoid
all artificial sweeteners, as these are toxic to the
liver and cause hypoglycemia and fatigue. If you must
have something sweet, have fresh raw fruits, sun-dried
fruits, honey or blackstrap molasses. You can also try
Stevia.

If you recall one of the liver's area of responsibility
was bile production. The more unhealthy fats you
ingest, the more bile it needs to manufacture.
So study the need for the omega 3 essential fatty
acids. People are so obsessed with removing fat from
their diets that they tend to go overboard. Your body
needs some fat. It's like lubricating it. Know the
right kind of fat and use it properly. Simply put, a
healthy liver pumps the unwanted fat out of your body.

Familiarize yourself with homocysteine and its role in
cholesterol metabolism. What you will learn will really
help you deal with your risk of arteriosclerosis, heart
disease and high blood pressure.

Learn what antioxidants are all about, where to find
them, and how they can help you fight back. Many
vegetable antioxidants have a healing and cleansing
effect on the liver. Understand oxidative stress and
how you can prevent it from destroying your liver.

As soon as you are prescribed a drug, check it out on
Medline
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/mplusdictionary.html
http://familydoctor.org/628.xml http://www.drugs.com
or any of the other drug sites. That is what the
internet is for! If there is any sign of possible liver
toxicity, beware. If you are on more than one drug, and
they, too, have possible liver toxicity, you may just
be increasing your chance of overloading your liver
with problems. Many people only look at the individual
drug when checking them out. You need to see your body
as a cauldron or laboratory of chemicals, all
interacting.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"That's right. However, the next night you
were concerned about her being late for supper and
she told you she had already eaten, in South
America. You were about to start with her
again, weren't you?"

"Yes, I was. I knew that was impossible."

"But tell me, what was her attitude then?"

"She was again calm. I couldn't believe it.
She was sitting there telling us she had just
eaten supper in South America and she was as calm
as could be. Even when I told her that was crazy
she did not change. I couldn't handle that. I
couldn't get mad. She was sitting there loving and
calm and confident. I couldn't fight that. Then
she told me about that sex talk she had with those
friends of yours. That really threw me."

"I'll bet it did, but it led to us meeting, to
this wonderful meal, thank you Harriet, and to all
this conversation tonight. What do you think about
all these things now?"

"I'm starting to think there is more to life
than what meets the eye. I think maybe I have to
learn more people skills too. If Sharon keeps this
up she will outdo me every time." Bob laughed and
winked at Sharon.

"That's good. Then we have accomplished
something here tonight. I'm glad" said Tim.

"You are quite a young man, Mr. Henry. I am
now glad my daughter finds you interesting and
wants to spend time with you, but I don't know how
much of this we can take. This has been an
education and I still have to deal with what the
church keeps telling us. I'll have to think on
that for some time."

"Harriet, how are you with all this?" Tim was
concerned about her reaction to all that had
happened.

"I'm fine with it, I guess. I don't know any
more. First the church tells us one thing and then
my daughter gets involved with you and I am forced
to look at things. I know we will run up against
some trouble in church if Sharon continues to see
you. This is a small town and news will travel.
I'm not sure I'm ready for that."

"That's a point well taken Harriet. We clearly
found the church drums up some pretty heavy
emotional reactions in people. Further, it seems
unfair that you might be subjected to some of that
merely because your daughter is going around with
someone the church thinks is evil. Yet that is
their problem isn't it? I mean you have now met
with me and, I assume, you don't find anything
objectionable. That the church, without even
knowing us, has decided to turn you against us is
something you will have to deal with. I apologize
for placing you in that position but I can do
nothing about it. Would you have Sharon and I
split up, only to make your life easier?"

"N..no, I don't think that would be right.
I'll have to think on this too. I don't think I'm
going to like what is about to happen, but I'll
have to see how they react."

"Harriet, please be prepared for the worst.
You may well be ostracized from church. That may
or may not be a bad thing, depending on your own
thoughts, but the words that will be cast about
while all that is happening are sure to hurt. You
must be ready for that."

"I suppose you are right. The easiest thing
for us to do would be to stop going to church
right now. That way we would avoid most of that
kind of thing."

"That is true. However, you must ask yourself
why you go to church in the first place. What does
it offer you? What do you get from it? Are you
attending from some sort of imposed obligation?
There are a lot of things to think on. Please
understand I am not saying you should leave
church. If I advocate anything it is only that you
read what Jesus said and follow those teachings.
That is all I am saying, and that is all I will
ever say, for there need be nothing more said."

"Thank you Tim. I appreciate you are not
saying anything against the church. I also
appreciate you concern over what we may face. Can
we call on you, to talk, if we get in a bind?"

"Of course. I'll be happy to toss ideas
around, and to chat over things that are
happening."

With that they all rose from the table and
once more went into the living room. The ladies
cleaned up and joined the men when done.

"Tim, I can't understand why there are not
more people in this world who understand this. Why
doesn't everyone do this?"

While waiting in line at the bank, a coworker developed
a very loud case of hiccups. By the time he reached the
teller's window, the hiccups seemed to have worsened.
The teller took my friend's check and proceeded to run a
computer verification of his account. After a minute
she looked up from her terminal with a frown and said
that she would be unable to cash his check.

"Why not?" my friend asked incredulously.

"I'm sorry, sir," she replied, "but our computer indicates
that you do not have sufficient funds to cover this amount.
As a matter of fact," she continued, "our records show
your account overdrawn in excess of $5000."

"It CAN'T be!" he cried. "You have GOT to be kidding!"

"Yes, I am," she answered with a big smile, counting
out his cash. "But you will notice that your hiccups
are gone."
