The Best Things in Life Are Rarely Things

Have you ever noticed this to be true?
The best things in life for me are those things are not things at
all. People and experiences make the biggest mark: a wonderful
relationship, time with family, or a fantastic vacation that
stays in my mind for years.
It seems funny to me that we spend so much time on this planet
chasing ?things? that we lose focus on what matters most. I mean,
what's the point of having that fantastic new home if you sleep
in it all alone? Or drive the nicest of cars but are too ill to
take it out for a spin?
Last week I was fortunate enough to meet an incredible guy named
David. He's one of the wealthiest people I've ever met, and one
of the richest guys I've come across.
What?s the difference you ask? Well, I've known many wealthy
people (the type with all the material resources you could
imagine), and then I've met truly rich people who have one thing
in common: they have balance.
David has all the monetary success you could ever imagine, yet
what made him special in my eye is that he wasn't driven by
money; it was more about his relationships. His wife and children
mean the most to him inside. He works out every day, watches his
diet, and here?s the real kicker, he doesn't care what other
people think of him. Even though he has all the money anyone
could want, need, or desire, he drives a modest car and lives in
a modest home, for that's all he says he really needs.
David told me stories of how ?keeping up with the Joneses? made
him live up to other people's expectations, and how he now
chooses to simply live up to his own expectations instead. What a
great thought, huh? It got it got me to thinking as well, and to
ask this question that I share with you now:
How would I live my life differently, if I lived it only for me?
I mean, do I have to wait until I?m wealthy before I begin to
enjoy the simple pleasures that surround me each day?
Imagine the freedom we'd have, not attempting to impress anyone
other than ourselves. Imagine the free time we'd have in our
minds, dreaming of what inspires us?rather than wasting time
attempting to please everyone else.
I suppose the lesson to be learned here is that this freedom can
be ours . . . and already exists before us. We simply need to
accept its challenge.
The challenge is this: For one month, make a conscious effort to
do what pleases you. Be proud of your success (but don't brag),
wear the clothes that make you comfortable and happy, eliminate
the fear to dance, take that risk you've been holding back, and
whatever you do . . . Keep smilin'.?

I mentioned corresponding with people about this very
situation over the last few weeks. In one week, I had
three people talking about Methotrexate. This is a drug
that makes your immune system less active. (Making your
immune system less active means your body doesn't get
quite the same signals as it would without the drug. If
your body is reminded of something it doesn't want in
it, it sets off its inflammatory process or builds up
antigens.it acts as an warning system Is it a good idea
to dampen the warning system? I liken it to closing the
door on a courier if you don't want the bad news.
The news is still there, you just don't know about it.
Again, is this is good idea? You need to think about
this.)
Methotrexate is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis,
psoriasis and other diseases that are associated with
an immune system that is too active. It is also used
for Meniere's patients to lessen their symptoms.
Methotrexate can help people with these problems. But
because it can cause some serious side effects, it must

One of the people I worked with had this treatment done
for her Meniere's "disease" and now has elevated liver
function results. This is a very common drug used to
reduce the body's natural response (inflammatory
process) to things that set off the symptoms. This drug
is very commonly administered. There is a written
caution about liver toxicity.
One of the other people I worked with this past week,
had SEVEN drugs prescribed. Three out of the seven all
had cautions about possible livers damage! A fourth
drug was contraindicated if "such and such" drug was
ordered. (It was.) Two were prescribed for high blood
pressure even though his blood pressure was already
slightly on the low side and he had the symptoms that
were mentioned on his drug profile sheet.
He was also taking some nutritional supplements which
were meant to rebuild his immune system. However, I
wonder how that could happen very effectively in view
of all the chemicals that continued to be put into his
body! For the supplements to work, he would need to
take in more antioxidants than were being removed via
all the chemicals he had with his drugs.

is within the nature of man to want to keep me or
anyone at the level where my associates are."
"Sure. But that does not pertain only to
living by higher law. If you decided you wanted to
double your income and started to take steps to do
that you would undoubtedly run into exactly the
same thing. There, too, you would have to be
committed. There is no difference. All groups do
what they can to keep you there at that level.
That is exactly what will happen in the church as
well."
"That makes sense. I can see that. The same
thing happens in our company when one of our guys
gets promoted from the floor into management. They
change their group of associates completely. Is
that all there is to it?"
"That's it, except here you are doing this by
your choice, not because you have been promoted."
"That makes it tougher all right. I can see if
I were promoted I would have no choice. I would
not even think about going back. I would be
looking to my future and trying to do the best I
could in the new job. Here, if I make the choice
myself, then when the going gets rough, I can
always think about going back."
"Sure, and that is what kills most people's
attempt at living by higher law. They don't ride
out the frustrations, they are not committed to
begin with and are always second guessing
themselves. Instead of being determined to do
this regardless of cost or effort, they begin to
think how nice it was back when they didn't have
to do this challenge. That not only weakens their
position but almost guarantees they will fail. You
must be committed to the exclusion of any
alternative."
"Wow! You don't leave much room do you?"
"It is not I, Bob. It is you who must decide
what you want and how determined you are. Read the
'Parable of the Sower'. Jesus clearly points out
there are many who think this a good idea, but so
many are like seed falling on rock, or on shallow
ground. Few there are who are determined enough to
stick with it. That is your own personal choice.
You will determine who you are. The law is there
to favor you when your make that choice final."
"So you are saying higher law is available to
all men, women and children, but few take
advantage of it?"
"That is what I am saying." Tim was being as
blunt and convincing as he could be. He had a
notion where this would go with Bob Smithson.
"Why would that be? If life was easier by
higher law, why wouldn't everyone do it?"
"Because there are those whose commitment is
weak. They get so far and then quite. Then they
begin to speak out against it, allowing others
around them to think it is too hard, or is
nonsense. That way those who fail appear to their
peers as if they are normal, even brave for having
tried it and come back to warn them. The peer
group does not think things through. So now Mr.
Brave is an authority and respected for his
knowledge. He likes that so he keeps up the lie
and develops a following. This strokes his ego,
and so long as no one around him thinks things
through he's fine and a hero. A lot of people do
this. The choice is there for all people. Each
must decide. Never forget the law 'As ye sow, so
shall ye reap.'"
"Always the law. It affects everything?"
"Nothing is exempt. How would you like to be
on the receiving end of the lie these quitters
must live when they try to tell others how higher
law doesn't work?"
"I...I'm not sure I want to be" Bob was
beginning to think about that.
"It would be better not to start in the first
place, wouldn't it? What is the point of beginning
if you are not committed to finishing?"
"The hour is getting late. I must leave. Thank
