Is it true that there's a substance in turkey that makes
you sleepy?
Turkey DOES contain the amino acid L-tryptophan, a
substance found naturally in many plant and animal
proteins. And L-tryptophan aids in the production of the
neurotransmitter serotonin, which has a tranquilizing effect.
L-tryptophan has been used to treat insomnia. However,
when taken with protein (like, for instance, turkey),
L-tryptophan is usually not effective, says the University
of Florida's College of Pharmacy. So that sleepy feeling
after Thanksgiving dinner is more likely the effect of a
heavy meal, alcohol, and a desire to not do the dishes.
It's NOT the L-tryptophan.
Are there really alligators in the sewers of New York?
That's mostly an urban legend. But it IS possible that at
one time, in the 1930s, there were a few alligators in
New York's sewers. A New York Times report from 1935
reports on an alligator dragged out of the sewer by a group
of teenagers in Harlem and promptly dispatched to that
great alligator swamp in the sky. A report from a former
New York City Commissioner of Sewers also confirms that
there really was a problem with alligators in the sewers
in the mid-1930s. Sewer Commissioner Teddy May launched
a project to eradicate them, though, and there most likely
are NOT alligators in New York's sewer system today.

Where Do Online Threats Originate?
September 24, 2004
At first glance the US ranks first, but a closer look at the
numbers reveals some surprises.
Symantec's "Internet Security Threat Report," which covers
the six-month period from January 1, 2004, to June 30, 2004,
and which was covered in an eMarketer article published
earlier this week, "Scary Stats: Internet Attacks Worldwide",
provides an in-depth look at the latest wave of online attacks.
But looking deeper into the report reveals several surprises.
First, where do online attacks come from? Since the US
has the most active Internet user base, it is the point of origin
for the most attacks. Of course, the country of origin may not
necessarily reflect the actual location of the attacker. While
it is simple to trace an attack back to the last IP address from
which the attack was launched, the computer used to launch
the attack may not be the attacker's own system. Attackers
frequently skip through numerous systems or use previously
compromised systems to hide their location prior to launching
an actual Internet attack. For example, an attacker in China
could launch an attack from a compromised system located
in South Korea against a Web server in New York. Further
complicating the matter is that international jurisdictional
issues often prevent proper investigation of an attacker's
real location.
Nevertheless, as close as the trackers can tell, the US
continues to be the top source country of attacks. However,
the percentage of attacks from the United States dropped
substantially over the past six months — from 58% during
the last six months of 2003, to just 37% in the first half of 2004.
Great Britain, ranked sixth in this reporting period, has
returned to the top ten attacking countries after a six-month
hiatus.
South Korea, which was ranked second in the second half
of 2002 and fourth in the first half of 2003, was ranked ninth
in the first half of 2004. This is a notable decline given the
high rate of computer penetration and high-speed Internet
in that country. In addition, Japan, which was ranked fourth
in the last half of 2003, is noticeably absent from the top ten
source countries. Symantec feels the drop in the rankings
of South Korea and Japan from the top attack source
countries indicates that attempts to encourage security
awareness in those countries are succeeding. However,
most of the entries in the top five are relatively static.
Overall, the rankings are not surprising.
What is surprising is what is revealed when you look at the
rate of attacks taking into account the total number of
Internet users in each country. A whole different
picture emerges.
The US is the originating country for the most attacks in
aggregate, but it's not even in the top ten originating
countries weighted by Internet capita. Latvia leads. In fact,
over the last year, a number of former Eastern bloc countries
have been associated with attacks for profit, and the fact
that Latvia has the highest rate of attacks per Internet
capita supports the reports.
The last major surprise in the report is the discovery of
attacks across a new channel: mobile devices.
Monitoring the development of malicious code on portable
devices, Symantec uncovered the Rugrat virus, the first virus
known to infect portable executable files on the 64-bit
Windows on IA-64 platforms; Cabir, the first worm to infect
Symbian OS smart phones using Bluetooth technology to
replicate; Duts.A, the first parasitic infector of portable
executable files on the Windows CE platform and Brador.,
the first backdoor Trojan to target Windows Mobile
operating systems, which was discovered as recently
as this August.
The amount of activity makes it likely that more attacks
will be launched on mobile platforms in the future, mirroring
the evolution of PC viruses. All of the examples demonstrate
the ability of malicious code authors to adapt new
technologies.

Find The Courage To Be Yourself, Make
Your Own Decisions, and Reduce Stress
PART 4 of 7
Here’s how to start. Spend some time by yourself with
paper and pen. Just relax and let things come to your
mind. At the beginning all sorts of things run in and
out of your head. Your family might feel you are being
lazy and unproductive. Stick with your plan. You will
be much better for them in the long haul. If you feel
the need to do things, push that feeling aside. This is
where you have to be very firm with yourself. And don’t
ask your family, especially your spouse for ideas. They
will laugh and make “less than helpful” remarks.
Remember they will be impacted by the “new” you. I have
suggested to people, especially men, to spend some time
in the local library. It’s quiet and private and the
expectation is for people to think and write. Perfect
place!
Let me share with you one of the very productive things
that will happen once you figure out your future and
the “new” you. Things that don’t fit into your new
“lifestyle”, now don’t have to be done! For instance,
you have decided you no longer have time to run errands
for everyone. Your time is more valuable for other
things. In the past, in preparation for your own
shopping, you always checked with your neighbors to see
if they needed things. They could do their own, but
your kindness allowed them to use your services. So
your ground rule now is to get your own shopping done
and use your time on things that will move you closer
to your personal goals. The benefit? More time for
things you have chosen as being more important. This
doesn’t mean you abandon those people. They just have
to understand that if they need your help, it will be
specific and without criticism. You are doing your best
and you are not a mind reader. And could there be the
unconscious fear of recurring disapproval? Who needs
that?
I know several ladies who out of complete kindness
always ask a neighbor if they would like something from
the store. And when they bring whatever items were
requested, they find that they didn’t do the right
thing. Then they feel badly. I teach them to ignore the
suggestion. Do your own shopping and the other person
will find ways to get their own things. What we don’t
realize is, that in doing these kind deeds, the other
people have found ways of avoiding their obligations.
This helps them to do that. By taking back the errand
time, you have given them back their control and at the
same time give yourself the gift of less tress and more
time.

Riata liked Shing Li and found a heart to heart
affiliation immediately.
For her part, Shing Li also relaxed and
enjoyed the friendship in a new way. It was almost
as if, in her soul, she could feel Riata.
The ladies talked for a while, bringing
everyone up to date.
"Where are all the kids, and where is
Miguele?" Mae wondered where they all were.
"Oh, Papa took them all over to visit Sonora
in Africa. They have never been away from home and
he decided that would be a good idea."
"That's wonderful, Abetta. They'll come home
all excited and talking about that trip for weeks.
That's terrific. Riata, why don't you take Shing
Li over to the orphanage? I'll stay here and talk
with your Mom for a while. We like having tea
together." Mae was wanting Shing Li to experience
higher law by and with others, thereby making it
seem more natural.
"That's okay with me. How about you Shing Li?"
"Y...yes. That would be okay."
"Good. Take my hand."
Shing Li took Riata's hand and in that instant
they were at the orphanage.
Shing Li looked around. There were a lot of
kids here. It was dark and cool under the roof. It
allowed her to look outside and see all the people
moving past the shrine, to the food table and on
out of the compound. "What are all those people
doing?"
"When I first started the orphanage the people
around here thought it was a good idea. We were
getting the kids off the street and training them.
The theft rate and the break-in rate for the
merchants around here dropped to nothing. They
liked that. Then the Catholic church decided they
wanted to take over this orphanage. They had heard
about how the kids were fed while no one was
asking for money. They thought it was a
blasphemous act and wanted to take over to teach
the kids what they think is real truth. They were
unsuccessful, until one day they appointed a man
to come here and shoot me. I knew it was coming. I
waited for it to happen. It did. Then my friends
came to get me and took me up into the air and we
disappeared. That whole event caused the people to
look at this place as a shrine. They come here,
worship, leave their money, have some hot food and
a drink, then leave. The line up have been this
way for over three years now, never ending."
"My! That must have been scary for you." Shing
Li was in awe.
"It was at the time, but I knew I would be all
right. We had earlier had a meeting with my friends
and we all decided it would be the best. We had no
idea the people would set this up as a shrine. The
kids here look after all the chores. This is where
Reno and Amenti spent a good deal of time. They
came from here."
"Yes, I know. I was just visiting them when
Mae asked if I would like to see where they came
from. Do all the kids here live by higher law?"
"Not all of them. We had a universal event
happen to us here. When my sister got married
Jesus saw to it that all the kids present were
able to live by higher law. Many of them have gone
to other places in the world, doing good works
where they see necessary. Most of these kids are
all new, in the last year. They are working with
the senior kids and learning as they go. The lines
out front never diminish, so there are many chores
for the kids to work on. They all share. I don't
often come here any more. They are all capable of
handling the affairs, and they are teaching the
newcomers about higher law. All will be well."
"Wow! I am impressed. I had no idea higher law
was spread so much all over the world. I thought
Mae and Susan were just two special people who
were like that. This is wonderful."
"They are two special people Shing Li, as are
you. You will find living by higher law to be much
easier than life was the way you used to live it.
You will be able to help many."
"I will like it. This is the first time I have
travelled away from home, and I have never
travelled so far, nor have I ever travelled this
way. It is so fast."
Riata laughed. "It surprised me too, when I
first did it. My teacher was Mae's friend Missy.
She taught both my sister and me. She lives up
river about a 1000 miles. You might meet her one
day.'"
"That would be nice. I am amazed at all that
is happening. It is almost too fast."
