A Dream With A Time Limit

"A goal is nothing more than a dream with a time limit," says
Joe L. Griffith. Great idea! Does having a deadline improve
your work habits? Many folks get so much more done when they
are clear about when it has to be completed. Why not do this
with the things you want most in life?
When you set the bar, you know you can move it. The trick,
then, is to make the commitments you make to yourself as
important. or, even, more important. than the ones you make to
others. For some, that's a revolutionary idea!
Do you put yourself off? Do you put yourself 'on hold'
indefinitely? Many folks do. This is where the rubber hits the
road in good ol' American slang. This is where you have to
'fish or cut bait'. This is where you have to decide that you
are worth your time, energy and resources. I was raised by
Depression Era parents. Their experience taught them to take
every measure to ensure financial security. By example and
osmosis, this was passed along to me. To a degree, their
approach makes sense, however, it was a difficult change to
make when I wanted to invest in myself. To take my money and
invest it in me and my business rather than accumulate it in
savings and investments took a lot of courage and
self-confidence. I still have to sit myself down and give
myself a good talking to some days!
Money makes money. You make money. What you do
with that money determines your success. Life is filled with
opportunities. Of course, you have to pay your bills but it is
very good advice to pay yourself first. Put some money in a
place where it will make money smartly first, then, pay the bills.
This will help you realize your dreams. Unless, of course,
your dream is to scrounge, scrape and scurry through life
with difficulty. Then, forget the last paragraph.
Put a time limit on your goals. Give yourself something to
work towards. You will achieve your dreams once you know what
they are, what you're going to do to accomplish them, AND by
when you will complete the task. Self-confidence will increase
in direct proportion to the attention you give to your
commitments to yourself. What a terrific by-product!

Find The Courage To Be Yourself, Make
Your Own Decisions, and Reduce Stress

She taught us that there are many, many ways to do
things we want to do and no one person has all the
answers. For example, if you ask an accountant to ask
if you could claim such and such for income tax
purposes, often the answer is “no”. Yet you hear about
people who are doing this all the time. How do they do
it? You need to recognize that this is “unknown to your
particular accountant”. You just haven’t found the
appropriate professional yet. If we go back to
beginning of this article, I mentioned doctor’s visits.
Let’s assume that you had heard of “natural” ways to
reduce cholesterol or handle heart disease. Yet your
doctor says drugs are the only way to prevent problems.
With your new decision-making skills, you now might
have the courage to say to yourself that “these ways
may yet be “unknown” to this doctor. Let me explore
other avenues”. It takes away the frustration of not
being in control of your own health. Do you remember
the days women needed their husband’s permission to buy
most things? I once recall wanting to buy my own car.
Yet the salesman told me to bring my husband. Things
change constantly. Be ready.
I mentioned earlier that you need to sit quietly and
think or allow things to come to your mind about your
skills and abilities: likes and dislikes. As they rise
to your consciousness, gently examine them. You don’t
have to take each one and develop it right away. The
first stage is awareness that you even have a choice to
make! You will end up doing many of these sessions. You
will end up really enjoying your own company! The
stress reduction inherent in this exercise is
phenomenal! But it won’t come quickly or easily. Rest
assured it will come eventually. Give it time and
space. In these “sessions” you will find things that
really feel important. You also recognize that each
stage brings with it lessons to learn. Take time or set
time aside to learn. Then you have to decide to make
some serious changes in yourself. The next stage is
find out what you need to learn. Everything has a
learning curve. No on can escape it unless they simply
vegetate towards their death. No one expects you to be
perfect in things you are just starting to learn…but
practice is crucial. One thing I found to be very
helpful in these “practice” sessions was to do it with
another person. It is a well known fact that you learn
more by teaching another person. (If I have to give a
presentation, I always learn more than anyone else.)
But then finally you get to put your knowledge into
action. Already you feel more in tune and comfortable.
More hopeful and more expectant. Also throughout this
process you have learned many things about yourself.
You know the end result will lead to more growth and
more independence.

and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,

only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.

The girls chatted for a short while then
decided to break up. Maria, as she had stated,
went directly to the orphanage in China. Eloise,
Riata and Shing Li went back over to Riata's home.
"Eloise! What a surprise. Gee it's nice to see
you" Mae went over to Eloise and gave her a long
hug.
"Hello Mae. It has been a while. That is why I
came visiting, I knew you would be here."
Abetta went up to Shing Li and gave her a hug,
whispering in her eay "Welcome to higher law."
Shing Li stood back and looked at her. She was
not quite sure what Abetta meant.
Suddenly everyone in the room fell silent.
They all looked at one another. Shing Li was
wondering what was up.
"Eloise, why don't you return to your family.
Riata, Abetta, Shing Li and I will go to help."
"Okay, Mae. Thanks" and Eloise was away.
"Shing Li" said Mae, "We have just been
advised there is an armed insurrection amongst
tribes people in the north of your country.
Mongolians are attacking some of the locals,
at a village. We have been asked to come diffuse
the situation. Would you like to come and see what
happens?"
"I...I don't know. I have not done this
before."
"Good answer. Come with me you will be safe."
Mae held out her hand and the instant Shing Li
took it they vanished.
The pair of them, along with Abetta and Riata
appeared in a valley. The slopes were steep on
each side. At the head of the valley was a high
precipice being defended by people who apparently
lived there. They were a simple people, without
weapons, but using the height of the precipice to
their advantage. They had long stored boulders on
the ridge for just such an occasion.
Below, on the valley floor were horseman with
rifles shooting up to the ridge. Every once in a
while they would hit someone and you could hear a
yell of pain.
The horsemen were attempting to get their
horses up the slope to the ridge, but every time
one got partway there would be a boulder come over
the ridge and both horse and rider had to do some
fancy stepping to avoid certain death. Many had
not made it and were littering the slope and the
valley floor below.
If the battle was to continue this way the
people on top of the ridge would surely win the
day, if by attrition alone. However, the attacking
force had planned wisely and during the previous
night had quietly scaled the walls of the valley.
They had snipers high in the crevices that made up
the valley sides. These men were placed above the
people on the ridge and had an excellent view of
the activity below. Many snipers picked off the
people on the ridge, including women and children.
Unknown to them, the people of the ridge had
forseen this possibility many years ago. They had
dug and carved tunnels within the valley walls.
These tunnels held staircases that took them to
the very top of the cliffs that surrounded the
valley. Now, there were a small group of men from
the ridge people who had climbed up inside the
tunnels and were beginning to throw boulders down
upon the snipers. It was a move that had obviously
taken the snipers by surprise. They would expose
themselves, shoot, then duck back quickly into the
protection of the crevices.
This battle could go on for days with no
fruitful outcome, but it would certainly cause
death and pain for all. The whole point was the
belief the attackers had that, apparently, the
ridge people were rich with foodstuffs and gold.
The belief was wrong for these were a simple
people who merely eked a living out of this
hostile environment. They had some rice paddies
and a few cattle, nothing more. It was only enough
to feed their village. It kept the population down
and was hard work just living. Yet they had been
here for centuries, even longer. And they had been
under attack before. That is why their defenses
were so well thought out. However, these defenses
were designed before the advent of the 20th
century gun. While still effective, the defense
was now more costly than it had been in the
centuries past.
Abetta, Riata, Mae and Shing Li had remained
invisible. They wanted to asses the situation
unnoticed. They decided that Mae and Shing Li
would remain here on the valley floor to help
where they could. Abetta and Riata would go up on
the ridge to help there. Abetta would help the
ridge people and Riata would see to each sniper,
individually. The idea was to cause a sense of
frustration and loss in the attackers so the
attack would break off and they would go home.
Then the ladies would step in to help the wounded.

Consciousness: That annoying time between naps.

Whenever I get a package of plain M&Ms, I make it my
duty to continue the strength and robustness of the candy
as a species. To this end, I hold M&M duels.
Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger,
I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of
them cracks and splinters. That is the "loser," and I eat
the inferior one immediately. The winner gets to go another
round. I have found that, in general, the brown and red M&Ms
are tougher, and the newer blue ones are genetically inferior.
I have hypothesized that the blue M&Ms as a race cannot
survive long in the intense theatre of competition that is
the modern candy and snack-food world.
Occasionally I will get a mutation, a candy that is misshapen,
or pointier, or flatter than the rest. Almost invariably this
proves to be a weakness, but on very rare occasions it
gives the candy extra strength. In this way, the species
continues to adapt to its environment.
When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M,
the strongest of the herd. Since it would make no sense to
eat this one as well, I pack it neatly in an envelope and
send it to M&M Mars, A Division of Mars, Inc., Hackettstown,
NJ 17840-1503 U.S.A. Send it along with a 3x5 card reading,
"Please use this M&M for breeding purposes."
This week they wrote back to thank me, and sent me a
coupon for a free 1/2 pound bag of plain M&Ms. I consider
this "grant money." I have set aside the weekend for a grand
tournament. From a field of hundreds, we will discover
the True Champion.
