In Greek mythology, what were the names of the three
Gorgons?
The most famous Gorgon, of course, is Medusa -- the woman (a
mortal) turned into a monster with snaky hair. Her sisters,
Euryale and Stheno, are less well known -- though equally
hideous.
Where did the term "stool pigeon" originate?
A "stool pigeon" is an informer. The expression has an
interesting origin. In the nineteenth century, people who
wanted to capture pigeons would use one pigeon to attract
others. The birds, like many birds, love to congregate.
Here's how fowlers would do it: they'd take a captured
pigeon, tether it to a stool, and let it hop around until
other pigeons flew down to join it. The fowler could then
drop a net and catch dozens of birds. Hence, a stool pigeon
helped humans capture its friends.

Sometimes We Don't Listen So Good!
A fleeing Taliban Arab, desperate for water, was plodding
through the Afghanistan desert when he saw something far off
in the distance.
Hoping to find water, he walked towards the image, only to
find a little old Jewish man sitting at a card table with a
bunch of neckties laid out on it.
The Arab asked, "I'm dying of thirst, can I have some
water?"
The man replied, "I don't have any water, but why don't you
buy a tie? Here's one that goes nicely with your robes."
The Arab shouted, "I don't want a tie, you idiot, I need
water!"
"OK, don't buy a tie. But to show you what a nice guy I am,
I'll tell you that over that hill there, about 5 miles, is a
nice restaurant. Walk that way; they have all the water you
need."
The Arab thanked him and staggered away towards the hill and
eventually disappeared.
Three hours later the Arab came crawling back to where the
man was sitting behind his card table.
The man said, "I told you, about four miles over that hill.
Couldn't you find it?"
The Arab rasped, "I found it all right. Your brother
wouldn't let me in without a tie."
Sometimes We Don't Listen So Good! You know that's right?
Sometimes we get so wrapped up in what we are doing we don't
listen so good. Even when someone is speaking to us our mind
is on the project we are working on.
Oh! We "play listen". We look at that person and we give
some answers but too often we are not really in the
conversation. We give the appearance of listening and we can
even carry on a conversation but if we have something we
think needs doing we only play at communicating because our
mind is elsewhere.
In no situation does this happen more often than in
relationships that have gone on for a long time. The desire
to live together is still there but the interests are not
always precisely the same.
To correct the situation takes determination. It takes
courage, it takes love. Whatever you are working on is
important. No one around you is saying otherwise. What they
are saying is "Where are you?". You might be sitting right
in front of them when they say that. They are saying where
is your mind, where is our togetherness?
Did you ever think that sometimes you have to listen with
your eyes? Sometimes it is necessary to open your eyes and
really see what is happening around you. Sometimes you have
to care about someone or something other than the project
you are working on. Sometimes there are more important
things. Look.
Listen to tones of voice. Listen to the timbre in someones
voice, Listen to determine what they are feeling and fulfill
their needs.
Listening is an art form and there are rules to follow:
1 Be truly interested in what someone is saying to you.
2. Be aware of the body language. Does it match the words?
3. Look the speaker right in the eye for sometimes the eyes
will tell you more than the mouth.
4. Actively engage in the conversation.
5. Never speak to someone without looking them in the eye.
6. Never speak with something in or over your mouth.
7. Care about who you are speaking with.
8. Care about what they are speaking about, because, while
it may be of no real interest to you it apparently is to
them.
9. Check out the surroundings to see if there are any clues
of which you should be aware.
10. When listening, have both feet on the floor and lean
slightly toward the speaker.
11. Smile

Your Immune System: Delicate Yet Critical
How It Serves You And Why You Need To Keep It Healthy
PART 10 of 12
We continue to use antibiotics to "cover" everything. We are
now discovering that this was just adding more problems.
(This is why you should not overdo the use of anti-bacterial
soaps: most people have no real need for them.) Every
chemical going into your body is seen as an enemy: a free
radical.
A majority of the illnesses that afflict us are related to
negative nutritional factors such as inadequate amounts of
the correct nutrients and the unavailability of a complete
and balanced lifestyle in a "friendly" environment. A diet
high in animal fat and cholesterol and low in fiber is
unsuitable. Tobacco/ smoking, excessive alcohol
consumption, excessive exercise, and factors such as
chemical carcinogens, ozone depletion, air pollution,
industrial toxins, also contribute to this negative
environment. They result in oxidative stress. Again, these,
in our very simplistic terms for ease of understanding, are
"free radicals". And without getting too technical,
oxidative stress relates to the number of free radicals and
the inadequate amount of antioxidants to neutralize them. In
other words, the free radicals have outnumbered the
antioxidants.
All these are part of this overload. More "free radicals".
But you have to live... So want can you do? I often mention
the Journal of the American Medical Association report on
the use of nutritional supplementation. If such a
conservative "institution" is supporting the use of
nutritional supplements to reverse and or prevent
degenerative conditions, it really pays to listen.
What can you do to help insure that your immune system can
provide you with health and energy? The answer has many
parts, but it can be described simply. Essentially you will
want to reduce the intake or exposure to anything that
creates free radicals or toxins, and increase whatever
nutrients your body needs to "empower" the Immune System.
It's not quite so simple as many things contribute to both
the positive and the negative side. You can't realistically
sit in your garden and eat lots of carrots, as your body
needs all the elements of a nutritionally balanced diet.
(One of my fondest memories is sitting in a strawberry patch
on Cape Cod as a teenager, eating all the strawberries I
wanted. Instead of getting healthier, I broke out in a rash!
I guess my body was sending a message of "unhealthiness".
Maybe moderation should have been part of my decision.)
Start looking carefully at what you eat and make sure it is
helpful and supportive in your new search for health.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Slowly they began to disperse, returning to
their own parishes. In the mind of each was the
memory of what had happened, but in the
consciousness of their thinking they knew it was
just a dream. There was nothing upon which they
could claim truth. So they did what the cardinal
had demanded.
None of them could see the techniques they
were trained to use in controlling the public were
the same techniques the cardinal had used to
control them. Keep the public in ignorance and you
shall have sway over them. All men fold in face of
their own ignorance. It is a long standing
principle of leadership. Use their ignorance
against them.
That happens all too often in personal
relationships as well. It is easy to impose a
guilt trip on someone who is all too aware of
their ignorance on any particular subject. If you
look at it the same old pattern emerges from
government or any leadership that wants a certain
action from the public. It is the age old story of
the bad guys coming into town and lighting fire to
the church so, while everyone is busy, they can go
rob the bank.
Men have a tendency to think only on the
condition in which they find themselves with
little analysis of what is going on around them.
They fail to see the real occurrence because they
allow themselves to become busy with their
busyness.
Such was the ploy the cardinal used and it
would work to the detriment of his plans and
desires. He knew that, deep down, but his
arrogance, ego and pride would not permit him to
see it.
The cardinal, too, headed back to his office.
He breathed a sigh of relief, for it appeared like
the crisis was over. This called for a drink.
He went to his desk and took out a bottle,
then poured himself a drink. He downed it quickly.
It felt good as it burned its way down his gullet.
The next thing he did was summon his favorite
nun. A man, after all, needs the companionship of
a good woman in order to be whole.
When she arrived, she knew well why she had
been summoned. She sat down across the desk from
the cardinal and, as expected, was given a drink.
They engaged in small talk for a while, relaxing.
Then the cardinal asked her to come around the
desk and sit on his lap. She did just that. He
reached up and began to touch her breasts. They
kissed.
Suddenly he stood up, throwing her off his lap
and dumped her unceremoniously on the floor. Then
he bent over in excruciating pain. He held himself
in the groin and writhed in pain. He knew not what
was happening but the burning pain was more than
he could tolerate.
The nun was shocked. She, too, had been
looking forward to this little tryst. She liked
the man. But it was not to be.
She moved in to him in an attempt to aid him
in his pain. She could not. He only pushed her
away.
The pain was so bad he fell to the floor,
continually rolling and groaning. His pain was
such he couldn't even explain it to her. It wasn't
that she wouldn't understand. It was that he
couldn't talk. It was terrible pain.
Ever so slowly the pain began to subside. He
wasn't groaning so much, neither rolling around.
The nun helped him to his feet, albeit a bent over
posture. She guided him to his chair.
"What happened? What is the matter?" She stood
behind him and held him around the shoulders,
hoping to bring his head to her breast and console
him. He allowed this attention.
Steadily the pain began to leave. "I ... I
don't know what happened. Suddenly there was a
terrible pain in my groin. Thank goodness it has
gone. I don't know what that was."
He lifted his hand once more to the breast on
which she had placed his head. He held it and
squeezed it. Then it hit again ...
He couldn't stand the pain and cried out. His
moaning and his writhing was intolerable. She
didn't know what to do and she didn't understand
the problem. One thing was clear. They were not
going to be doing what she came for.
The cardinal was rolling on the floor again in
even greater pain than he had before. This time it
did not appear to be letting up but was lasting
longer. He was holding himself as if putting
pressure on the area would ease the pain some. It
didn't but at least it was doing something.
He was going out of his mind with pain. He
couldn't speak, think, even walk. He was rendered
helpless and useless.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Macaroni: Why did Yankee Doodle call himself "macaroni"?
Because that was the then current name for a "fop" or a
"dandy". It was the name for a dandy because a group of
well-travelled young Englishmen of wealth and position
formed a club called the "Macaroni Club" in London around
1760. They named the club that because they were fond of
foreign cooking. these young men also dressed in foreign
manner; the common people misunderstood the use of the word
"macaroni" and took the name of their club to be descriptive
of their dress.
