What animal has a rectangular pupil?

Several animals, including goats and sheep, have rectangular
pupils! It is thought that the strange pupil shape allows
them greater peripheral (side) vision, so they can see
predators more clearly at night while they are feeding.

What wild animal has killed the most people in Africa?

It's not the lion, nor any of the big cats. It's the
hippopotamus. More than 400 people in Africa have been
killed by hippos. They may be vegetarians that spend most of
their time in the water, but hippos are fierce when
defending their young or territory. The can bite a boat in
half and can easily turn boats over.

Group says Yahoo helped jail Chinese journalist Published:

A French media watchdog group claimed on Tuesday that Yahoo
provided information that helped Chinese officials convict a
journalist accused of leaking state secrets.

Shi Tao, a 37-year-old writer for the Dangdai Shang Bao
(Contemporary Business News), was sentenced in April to 10
years in prison, Reporters Without Borders said in a
statement. He was convicted of sending to foreign Web sites
a "top secret" government message that had been sent to his
newspaper.

The international watchdog organization said recently
translated court papers revealed that Yahoo Holdings in Hong
Kong provided Chinese investigators with detailed
information that helped them link Shi's personal e-mail
account and a specific message containing the "state secret"
to the IP address of his computer.

The state secret was a message to Shi's newspaper warning
journalists of the dangers associated with dissidents
returning to mark the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen
Square massacre, according to the group. Shi admitted
sending the e-mail but disputed whether it was a secret
document.

"We already knew that Yahoo collaborates enthusiastically
with the Chinese regime in questions of censorship, and now
we know it is a Chinese police informant as well," Reporters
Without Borders said in its statement. Intel: Friend or foe?

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company responded to the charges
in a written statement: "Just like any other global company,
Yahoo must ensure that its local country sites must operate
within the laws, regulations and customs of the country in
which they are based."

The harsh criticism comes as Yahoo and rivals Microsoft and
Google are engaged in a high-stakes fight to expand into the
lucrative Chinese marketplace.

Just last month, Yahoo paid $1 billion for a 40 percent
stake in Alibaba.com, which many consider to be the largest
e-commerce company in China. Meanwhile, Google and Microsoft
are fighting in a Washington state court over the employment
of Kai-Fu Lee, a former Microsoft employee who helped the
software giant build up its Chinese offices. Google hopes
Lee will help expand its presence in China as well.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

A&P Anatomy And Physiology
PART 1 of 11
The Make Up Of Your Body And How It Functions

As you know, I participate in health clinics in pharmacies.
I am one of those nurses in a lab coat, stethoscope around
my neck, a smile on my face, who approaches you and asks if
you would like your blood pressure taken. Few people
decline. Most accept my offer. I measure your blood
pressure, discuss the results, and then offer whatever other
clinic topic is being done that day. Invariably the subject
comes down to a discussion on the person’s other health
issues. It is at this point I always want to teach them
about their bodies: what they are made of and how function.

And as usual, I would like you to use this information for
interest only, not as medical research.

People KNOW their body has many parts, and they want some
ides as to what might or might not be happening. I have
found a marked improvement in the last decade in the kind of
questions people ask and their desire to stay healthy.
People seem to be much more interested in getting all the
facts before they take action. And there is much you can do
to stay healthy. If you have some health issues, you might
want to find out how to regain your “missing” health. But in
order to do that you really need to know how your body
functions and what it’s all about. People are very
intelligent. If they don’t know something, they search the
Internet for the information themselves or get someone to do
it for them. They want to understand why things happen to
them. I draw many a picture of blood vessels (arteries)
filled with “debris” or show how the kidney connects to the
bladder, or how the ear functions. Once you know what true
health is, you can understand why your body might be
experiencing less than desirable results. Then you make
informed decisions and can take reasonable actions.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

At the cardinal's office there was trouble
brewing. One of the three priests who had taken
over the cardinal's decision making, one of the
"bosses" was starting to think that if he could
get rid of the other two he would have complete
control. It had been a couple months since they
had taken over. The cardinal was doing as he was
told and all seemed to be going well.

There was still money coming in from the young
priest's parish and none other. The three wanted
to stop the young priest from instructing as he
was, it went against church policy and doctrine.

The one who wanted control was the stronger of
the three. He knew that if he could send one of
the other two away on a mission then he could work
on the other one. They conspired to do just that.

The whole plan suddenly fell into place. The
stronger one asked each of the others who would
volunteer to go to the young priest's parish to
supervise for a while. He looked at each of them
and, reluctantly one volunteered.

They discussed what should be done and said.
It was as if they were walking on eggs. They
didn't want to shut down the money that was coming
in but, at the same time, they wanted this young
priest to follow doctrine as closely as possible.

The strong priest really didn't care. The only
thing he wanted out of this exercise was to get
one of the other two out of there. He wanted one
of them gone for a short period so he could begin
to work on the other one.

Sure enough, the day the priest left on his
job as emissary the strong one started in. "I
think we should eliminate our friend. If we do
then there will be just the two of us with the
power. There is no need to share it with him
anyway. He is weak and prone to crumble if Rome
sends any emissary out here." The priest put his
arms around the other as if they were real
buddies.

"I ... I don't know. That would be unfair to
him."

"Do you want him to be subject to questions if
Rome sends someone our here? Do you think he can
face authority and lie?"

"No, I don't. I think he will disintegrate and
the game will be up."

"So, what do you think we should do?"

"I ... I don't know. Can we transfer him?"

"He won't go for that. He'll see right away
what is up and then he will advise Rome directly.
No, I think we should send him up to the seminary
for a short rest. I think we should all go for a
short rest, even the cardinal. When we send our
friend away we will ensure the workers at the
seminary keep him in solitary and don't let him
out. Then there will be just the two of us. That
will be much better."

"That sounds like it will work, all right. Do
you think it is right?"

"No, I don't. Yet when I look at the risks I
am afraid I have no choice. What do you think."

"When you put it that way, I agree. It will be
for the good of the cardinal's office. We cannot
run the risk of any weakness."

"I'll tell you what. I will go up to the
seminary for a week, for a bit of a break and some
alone time. When I get back our friend should also
be back. We'll send him to the seminary at that
time. Then we'll send the cardinal for a week and
when he returns you can take your week off. How
does that sound. Can you wait that long for a bit
of a break?"

"I think I can. That should work. Maybe we
should leave the cardinal up there too."

"That would be tempting, but so long as he
does as he is told we need him here. There would
be too many questions from too many people if he
isn't."

"I suppose you're right."

With that simple plan the stage was set. The
stronger priest, the schemer was going to have the
seminary hold both the priests. The plan seemed
logical and the remaining priest appeared as if he
suspected nothing. When his turn came to go for
his break at the seminary, the strong one would
simply issue an order from the cardinal's office
to hold him in isolation as well. That way he,
alone, would have the power. He could then do what
he wanted within the purview of the cardinal's
office.

He was gloating inside. He was tickled with
how easy it all seemed to be working out. When the
other priest left his presence he danced a little
jig, but he did so silently. He didn't want to
raise anyone's attention. By this time next month
he would be in complete control of the cardinal's
office and no one could do a thing about it.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

U-boat: Why doe we call the German submarine a "U-boat"?

Because the German name for a "submarine" is unterseeboot -
and so, the "U" stands for "undersea".

Tomorrow: Vamp: Why are seductive women and firemen
both called "vamps"?

HA! HA! HA!

A little boy was doing his math homework. He said to
himself, "Two plus five, that son of a bitch is seven. Three
plus six, that son of a bitch is nine...."

His mother heard what he was saying and gasped, What are you
doing?"

The little boy answered, "I'm doing my math homework, Mom."

"And this is how your teacher taught you to do it?" the
mother asked.

"Yes," he answered.

Infuriated, the mother asked the teacher the next day, "What
are you teaching my son in math?"

The teacher replied, "Right now, we are learning addition."

The mother asked, "And are you teaching them to say two plus
two, that son of a bitch is four?"

After the teacher stopped laughing, she answered, "What I
taught them was, two plus two, THE SUM OF WHICH, is four."
