TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

What famous man was Philip Barton Key's father?
What happened to Daniel Sickles after he was acquitted?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Why are people in our century so much taller than in the
past?
Ever go to a museum and see a real door from centuries ago?
If so, you might have noticed how small it was, too small
for most adult males today to even walk through? Why have
people gotten bigger and bigger as the years have gone by?
Scientists think the answer lies mostly in better nutrition
and better health. People these days live longer, get less
sick, AND grow taller because they eat better and understand
more about how to remain healthy.
What US Congressman became the first US defendant to claim
"temporary insanity" in a criminal trial?
Daniel E. Sickles, a Democratic US representative from New
York, killed his wife's lover, Philip Barton Key, the US
attorney for the District of Columbia, in 1859. The murder
was carried out in broad daylight after Sickles spotted Key
standing outside Sickles' house waving a handkerchief in the
direction of his wife's bedroom. Sickles stormed out of the
house with two derringers AND a revolver and proceeded to
shoot Key several times as the man begged for his life.
During Sickles' trial for murder, his attorneys argued that
he went mad because of his despair over his wife's
infidelities (never mind, of course, that Sickles was
carrying on several affairs of his own). Sickles was the
first defendant to use the "temporary insanity" defense in
the US. It worked, and he was acquitted to the thunderous
applause of spectators in the courtroom. (Prior to being
released, it's interesting to note that Sickles spent his
time in jail in the jailer's own office, receiving visits
from family, friends, and even his greyhound, Dandy.)
Following his acquittal, Sickles was actually criticized by
the press when he "forgave" his wife. No word on whether
she ever forgave him for his infidelities. The murder and
its aftermath are described in Nat Brandt's 1991 book, "The
Congressman Who Got Away With Murder."

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------
Bridges To Build!
Once upon a time two brothers who lived on adjoining farms
fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 40
years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and
trading labor and goods as needed without a hitch.
Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a
small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference,
and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words
followed by weeks of silence.
One morning there was a knock on John's door. He opened it
to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox. "I'm looking for a
few days work," he said. "Perhaps you would have a few small
jobs here and there. Could I help you?"
"Yes," said the older brother. "I do have a job for you.
Look across the creek at that farm. That's my neighbor; in
fact, it's my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow
between us and he took his bulldozer to the river levee and
now there is a creek between us. Well, he may have done this
to spite me, but I'll go him one better. See that pile of
lumber curing by the barn? I want you to build me a
fence--an 8-foot fence--so I won't need to see his place
anymore. Cool him down, anyhow."
The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation.
Show me the nails and the post-hole digger and I'll be able
to do a job that pleases you."
The older brother had to go to town for supplies, so he
helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was
off for the day.
The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing,
nailing. About sunset when the farmer returned, the
carpenter had just finished his job.
The farmer's eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped. There was no
fence there at all. It was a bridge -- a bridge stretching
from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of
work handrails and all--and the neighbor his younger
brother, was coming across, his hand outstretched.
"You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I've
said and done."
The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then
they met in the middle, taking each other's hand. They
turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox on his
shoulder.
"No, wait! Stay a few days. I've a lot of other projects for
you," said the older brother.
"I'd love to stay on," the carpenter said, "but I have many
more bridges to build."
I, of course, did not write the story above. It was sent to
me by a friend from Saskatchewan, Canada.
Some of you think it is a cute story, one with a moral,
true, but just a story nonetheless. If you are one of those
of such a mind, take a trip to Sante Fe, New Mexico. There,
in the church at the head of the old town square you will
find a circular staircase built a long time ago under
similar conditions.
In the story THE SAGA OF PINEHILL we have heard that Jesus
comes to earth some times to build bridges. A lot of us
didn't believe that either, yet it is a truth men will
someday see.
This story is about forgiveness.
Take a shower and you cleanse the body. Forgiveness is like
taking a shower for the soul. It cleanses deep inside. It
creates new and loving people. More importantly you discover
that you are a clean, good, acceptable, lovable and
desirable person.
While you are in the forgiving business, do not forget to
forgive yourself. It is you who has made life's mistakes. It
is you who has sinned, it is you who has hurt people.
Forgive yourself for doing that and receive the blessing of
being washed by light, peace, love.
Failure to forgive yourself will render any forgiveness
incomplete. Some feel only your Maker can forgive you. That
is nonsense. You made mistakes. You were hurt because of it,
the law "As ye give, so shall ye receive", so forgive
yourself that event and receive the blessings thereof. If
you don't forgive yourself you miss the blessings.
We all have Bridges To Build! Some more than others, yet
that is an unmeasurable quantity. One thing, not forgiven
might just as well be an hundred. The effect, the damage, is
the same. Don't go around trying to convince yourself you
are not a bad person. The entire religious lesson about
forgiveness is to create good, sound health. Cleansing of
the soul is one way to help permit communication with your
Maker. That can't happen with you carrying around a huge
suitcase full of guilt. You are too busy taking care of your
guilt to pay attention to meaningful communication. By the
way, even in your external life that is true.
Go inside. Forgive. Let love, light, power flow in. You are
worth it.

A&P Anatomy And Physiology
PART 7 of 11
The Make Up Of Your Body And How It Functions
Let's review the definition of anatomy and physiology and
then use the heart as an example. ANATOMY is the study,
classification, and description of structures and organs of
the body. I think that's pretty well explained...cell to
tissue to organ to system to body. PHYSIOLOGY is the study
and process of the function of the human. It is the study of
the physical and chemical processes involved in the
functioning of the living organisms and their component
parts.
We know that the heart is a huge muscle, as is your biceps
muscle in your upper arm. Same tissue, but their FUNCTIONS
are VERY different! Let's suppose you are to cut out 3/4 of
your biceps muscle because it was diseased and becoming
necrotic (dying tissue). You would have a big hollow in your
arm, but life would continue. Do the same 3/4 "reduction" in
your heart (organ) and life COULD not continue! So the
function of any cell and its larger group, is vitally
important. And of course each organ has its own specific,
specialized and non-duplicable function. Obviously with ten
different systems working simultaneously in your body, there
is a lot of activity. And most of it done without any
knowledge or help on your part. Your heart beats. Your lungs
expand and contract automatically. They exchange blood with
oxygen for blood without oxygen. Your kidneys are constantly
filtering. Your digestive tract is handling input and output
of nutrients. Your skin is protecting you and holding you
together. Your bones are holding you upright and your brain
is computing millions of messages. You are a living miracle!
And this list isn't anywhere near complete! I have purposely
left out any reference to the other, invisible mechanisms of
your body. The central nervous system refers to the brain,
spinal cord, and spinal nerves. These serve as the main
"processing center" for the whole nervous system. They
control all the workings of the body. This is the operating
system. For now we will focus on the make up and functions of
your body.
Nothing so far has been said about maintaining this perfect
"machine". It does require maintenance. Nothing runs
forever. Systems break down by lack of one or more deficits.
The basic cell can be impaired by a number of factors. In a
very simplistic way, any food that the cell can't use or is
harmful hinders its health maintenance. All systems are
required to work in harmony and efficiency. It is called
dis-ease. Your body has supplied the cells, and the systems
and the functions. It's up to you to supply the maintenance
factors.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

----------------
Sam Henry loved fireside chats. Here he was in
central Africa with his wife and friends doing
just that. He remembered way back when he would
take his kids camping, or on survey work with him.
The campfires at night were the most enjoyable
time of the day. That is when they would talk
freely of most anything. They had no rules.
That was also the time Sam was able to get
into his kids heads the idea that the world
doesn't run on just physical laws but on spiritual
laws as well. It was then he encouraged his kids
to be self reliant so they could do their own
thinking on this subject and not follow a group.
If they wanted to do their own thing that was
great with Sam.
He knew, even then, that life in his family
was going to be different than life in most
families. Those nights around the campfires were
some of the most memorable Sam can remember.
He recalled how attentive Eloise had been. It
was almost as if he was talking to her about
information she already had. She paid careful
attention and followed through with most things
Sam taught her.
Indeed, it was because Eloise was such a good
student of life and was a very confident young
lady, that Sam and Alewka let her go on that
dangerous journey. They knew and trusted her
capabilities. And it was the training Sam had
given her during those camping trips and campfire
chats that ultimately paved the way for Eloise to
survive and for her to cross the veil of
simplicity into higher law.
Now, here, in Africa he was speaking with
friends, all of whom lived by higher law and they
through the efforts of Eloise.
"You know, Mombudo, what goes around comes
around. I can't help but marvel everyday at how
the law 'As ye sow, so shall ye reap' is so all
encompassing. I love it, cherish it. The law is
the basis of how I run my life."
"The same is true of all who live by higher
law, Sam. You are just melancholy tonight because
it is such a beautiful night."
"That it is, Mombudo, that it is."
"You are mellow tonight, honey, what's up?"
Alewka observed Sam's appreciative mental state.
"Oh, I don't know. I was just sitting here
thinking about how I enjoyed campfires and how
they have played such a part in our lives. Even at
the village where Eloise now lives the whole
village has campfires nearly every night. They use
it as a place to build unity, to train and talk to
their kids and to keep the village together. It's
a wonderful thing. So is this fire tonight, with
close friends."
"Oh, Sam Henry, you're just a big old softy!"
Alewka slapped him on his arm, then laughed. The
rest of the folks around the fire laughed, too,
not so much from the statement by Alewka but
rather by the warm interpersonal relationship they
were showing. Sam's and Alewka's relationship was
known as the most loving and long standing by all
who knew them. It was just one of those things
people counted on.
"So where do we go from here, Mr. Henry?"
Alewka asked.
"You're right honey. We've been interrupting
these folk's lives for over a month now."
"Sam Henry, don't you talk that way. You are
welcome here always and you know that." Kenyata
was very firm in her words. She loved having Sam
and Alewka visit and made it known in no uncertain
terms. "You are not interrupting our lives. We
enjoy it very much when you come to visit. You do
not do it often enough and this is the first time
we have been able to spend any time with you.
Don't talk like that."
"Whoa, Kenyata, I didn't mean to offend. In
our country when someone visits for as long as a
month it gets to be time they moved on. Maybe
that's just a North American thing. I have really
enjoyed being here, too, so don't think it is that
I want to get away. It is just time we left to do
other things. I'm sure you understand."
"I do, Sam, but please you and Alewka are not
interrupting. I will be sad to see you leave."
"Actually Mr. Henry," said Sonora, "that is
true for all of us. It has been a wonderful time
having you here to visit. Even the village got to
like the idea. Please come again and visit for as
long. These short visits don't give us a chance to
get to know you."
"Thank you, Sonora. That is very nice of you
to say that. I think, though, we must be on our
way. We want to go to China to visit Riata at the
orphanage. We suspect we'll catch up to Tom over
there too. Did you see the way Tlang had him wound
around her little finger. I'm afraid he's
smitten."

As a kid I used to have a lemonade stand. The sign said,
"All you can drink for a dime." So some kid would come up,
plunk down his dime, drink a glass, and say, "Refill it."
I'd say, "That'll be another dime."
"How come? Your sign says -- All you can drink for a dime!"

"Yeah."
"That's *all* you can drink for a dime...!"
