What outrageous thing did Daniel Sickles do with the leg he

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What famous man was Philip Barton Key's father?
Philip Barton Key, the murdered man, was the son of Francis
Scott Key, the man who wrote the lyrics to our national
anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." Coincidentally, Philip
Barton's brother, Daniel Key, was slain in a duel.
What happened to Daniel Sickles after he was acquitted?
After the trial, Sickles served as a Union general during
the Civil War, and then as a military governor of the
Carolinas. Later, he served as US minister to Spain and then
returned to Congress from 1893 to 1895. His young wife,
Teresa (who was barely more than a teenager at the time of
her affair), died at the age of 31 from illness. Sickles
married a Spanish woman and converted to Catholicism. (He is
also alleged to have had an affair with the deposed Queen
Isabella II.) He died at the age of 94 in 1914 and was
buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Google hires 'father of the Internet'
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc. said on Thursday it
hired Internet pioneer Vinton Cerf to become its "chief
Internet evangelist," the latest high-powered engineer to
sign up at the Web search leader.
Cerf, 62, is widely known as the "father of the Internet"
for his role in developing the TCP/IP standards that form
the structure of the Internet.
He was hired away from telecoms company MCI Inc. and tasked
with helping to develop new Internet applications for
Google. MCI is in the process of merging into Verizon
Communications Inc..
"The title is amazing," Cerf said in a phone interview.
"It's Chief Internet Evangelist, which suggests I should go
from three-piece suits to some sort of ecclesiastical
robes."
Cerf, who as a child was raised as a Congregationalist,
quipped that his religion is "geek orthodox."
He grew up in Southern California. He was an undergraduate
student at Stanford University and went on to co-develop the
Internet's basic protocols with Bob Kahn in 1973. Cerf has
remained an active inventor for more than 30 years.
He developed MCI Mail, an early commercial e-mail program
between 1982 and 1986 then left to work on a digital library
project with his colleague Kahn that involved an
intellectual property rights protection system.
For the last 11 years he has been working on Internet
infrastructure projects at MCI. Moving to Google will allow
him to return to developing applications, a Google executive
said.
"We expect Vin to work on new applications, to worry about
where the Internet is going, and how to keep it healthy,"
said Bill Courghan, 52, a vice president of engineering at
Google.
"These are all things which are good for Google," he said.
Since 1999, Cerf has served as chairman at Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
He has acted as a peacemaker in an organization riven by
controversies over the constitution of its authority by
Internet activists, domain name entrepreneurs and
governmental organizations outside the United States.
He said he hoped to retain the role in ICANN and avoid any
appearance of a conflict of interest. Google serves as a
registrar of Internet domain names and technically has
business interests governed by ICANN.
Cerf joins other high-profile engineers Google has hired
recently. These include Adam Bosworth, Google's vice
president of engineering, known as one of the pioneers of
XML, for Extensible Markup Language, which ungirds many
modern Web applications.
Louis Monier was an early developer at AltaVista, which was
the Web's most powerful search engine in the early years of
the commercial Internet. Mark Lucovsky was part of the team
that developed Windows NT at Microsoft Corp., while Andy
Rubin was a founder of Danger Inc. which developed the
Sidekick Web phone.
"These people just don't know you can't do that. So they
just go out and do it," Cerf said of working with a
generation who came of age in the Internet era. "That's the
great thing of working with all these new folks."

The Make Up Of Your Body And How It Functions
But there is another important factor to remember. We often
hear that we start to deteriorate when we are born. True
enough. Thats called the "aging process". It's normal and
natural. It starts at birth and ends in death. No one can
avoid it. But we can really prevent speeding up the process!
And that process is called disease and it is not normal. But
how can you possibly prevent the disease from getting a
foothold in your body if you don't know the basic
structures, functions, and needs?
Chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, strokes,
Menieres, dementia, osteoporosis, and arthritis, plus many
more can all be part of the breakdown: of degeneration: of
deterioration. Let's look at the normal aging process.
Normal aging is a series of lower activities: thinner skin,
fragile tissue and decreasing production of body fluids such
as lubricants, and slower mobility. It's finer hair and less
sharp eyesight. (But it is not macular degeneration.) The
terms "lesser", "thinner", "slower" describe the normal
aging process. Fewer hormones are produced and secreted.
Bone density is reduced, but it's not an accelerated
reduction as in osteoporosis. Your heart slows down and it
shows up as fatigue and this results in less blood being
circulated. That brings about less activity, including
nutrients, all through your body. The nutrients that drive
the metabolism are fewer and less available, but also less
is required. This is all normal. But it shows how completely
interrelated every part of you is!
Now enters a cultural phenomenon. The body of a 19 or 25
year old can run a long marathon. All the cells are
functioning at top performance. Anatomically they are
healthy and complete. Everything should be pretty perfect.
But we don't expect our 68 year old to be able to do the
same. It's not meant to be that way and for the senior who
does do this, they are to be commended. But it's rare. It's
perfectly possible. I would hazard a guess that only a tiny
fraction of our society is anatomically prepared to do this.
Most people cells are aging normally and are decreasing
their output or production. What came first? Nature or
culture? Personally I would think everything we do is either
based directly or indirectly on our understanding of nature.
Our natural makeup, experience, and expectations influence
us greatly.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

They all laughed. It had been quite obvious at
the wedding that Tom and Tlang were an item. That
was now three months ago and they were still going
strong.
Sam looked at Alewka. The time was getting to
be just right. As the night became later here, it
was just beginning daybreak at the orphanage.
Sam rose, and shook the dust off himself.
Alewka rose and did the same. They then embraced
all at the fire and said their good byes. There
were tears, for this had been a long and love
sharing visit by the Henrys.
In a blink of an eye they were in China. They
walked up to the orphanage, silently because all
were yet asleep. It was a cool morning so Sam
started a fire and he and Alewka sat around it
sipping some coffee she manifested. They found
some old wooden stumps to sit on and just sat
there and absorbed the warmth from the fire.
The day looked like it could rain. The sky
were full of clouds and they were low. There had
been signs of rain during the night and Sam felt
it was going to continue. It did not, at least for
a couple hours, then in came a water laden cloud
that let it fall. The rain came so heavy it put
out the fire.
By then Sam and Alewka determined some
movement within the orphanage. It was not much of
a structure. In fact there were no walls, much
like the orphanage in Matto Grosso. There was just
a roof the spread far enough to keep everyone dry.
Sam and Alewka walked inside to find Riata
sitting up on her mat. "Oh hi you guys! You
surprised me. It is good to see you here. Thank
you for coming." Riata was up and immediately went
into the role of hostess. Her voice woke others
and before you knew it the entire orphanage was
up.
They all went to do their morning clean up and
then came to spend time with Sam and Alewka. Most
of the kids had never seen this couple but it was
quite clear to them immediately that this was a
special couple worthy of respect.
Just as Sam and Alewka had expected Tom was
there with Tlang. "Hi Mom, Dad, How come the
visit?"
"Just to make sure you behave yourself young
man." Sam teased.
"Dad you know better than that."
"I know son. I was just teasing you. Hello
Tlang, how are you?"
"I'm fine, Mr. Henry. It is nice to see you
again. It has been three months. What brings you
to China?"
"Well I was just teasing Tom here about coming
to make sure he is behaving himself. But we wanted
to visit Sien's place and the orphanage was on the
way. We have not traveled much before so we
decided to stop in."
"Dad what happened to you appearance? You've
changed. Tell me about it." Tom somehow knew Sam's
appearance was not because of age or eating. He
knew this was something that came upon him at
once.
"That's a long story, Tom. I'll tell you about
it around the fire one night."
"I can hardly wait. You're taller and wider
too. Your complete stature has changed."
"Oh well, I'll tell you now. I became angry at
the catholic church in Matto Grosso taking
advantage of visitors to the shrine. The church
offered nothing but required people leave an
offering. It was the shrine they came to see and
it was the shrine that helped them. The church did
nothing and was there solely to collect monies. I
stopped it. It was like Jesus turning over the
tables of the money changers in the temple. The
moment I did that Jesus came and embraced me. He
established me in the Temple of the White
Brotherhood and during that process my stature was
changed."
"Good for you. You look very handsome."
"Thanks, I guess, Tom." Sam laughed. "Riata, I
see you are up to your usual fine and wonderful
work. Things are well?"
"Things are beautiful Mr. Henry. I have much
more help here and the children are very
responsive to our teachings. It will not be long
before they are all living by higher law. Many are
very close even now. I have Maria to help me. I
have Tlang to help me. I am glad she went to that
wedding. She has come back to be of much help. And
from time to time Mae and Susan drop in to see us
and stay for a while. Amenti and Reno are always a
big help. So you can see we are very well
equipped. What are you folks up to?"
"We thought it was time we got out of the
house and came to visit all our friends We have
just spent a month with your Mom and Dad and
another month with Mombudo and Kenyata. We won't
stay that long here but we thought we would stay
for a short while."

At breakfast one day, I eagerly waited for my husband to
comment on my first attempt at homemade cinnamon rolls.
After several minutes with no reaction, I asked, "If I baked
these commercially, how much do you think I could get for
one of them?"
Without looking up from his newspaper he replied, "About 10
years."
