What outrageous thing did Daniel Sickles do with the leg he
had amputated during the Civil War?

Daniel Sickles' leg was struck by a 12-pound cannonball at
Gettysburg during the Civil War and had to be amputated. Not
one to waste a limb, Sickles sent the leg to the new Army
Medical Museum in Washington, DC, with a visiting card that
read, "With the compliments of Major General D.E.S." For
many years after, Sickles actually went to the museum on the
anniversary of the amputation to visit his leg bone! And you
can too: it's still on display at the National Museum of
Health and Medicine at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in
Washington, DC.

What is black light? A black light trap?

Black light is invisible ultraviolet light. A black light
trap is a trap for insects that uses a form of black light
which attracts particular bugs.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------

No Coincidence!

Some of you may have guessed that one of my favorite
stories is Jonathan Livingston Seagull, by author
Richard Bach.

Well, guess what? "Jonathan" paid us a visit the other
day.

That's right. A ten year old grandson, walking along
the beach, came upon a seagull that did not move or try
to get away as the young fellow approached it.

Since all boys are inquisitive our grandson kept going
toward the seagull. Still no attempt to get away. The
bird was turning it's head and watching, but no visible
trying to get out of there.

Finally, the boy picked the bird up and brought it
home.

It had a fish hook caught in it's mouth. The boy held
it gently. His mother came over as did his sisters and
Grandma and Grandpa. The bird was and is beautiful,
although it was obvious something was wrong with it,
even though we didn't know what.

The boy's mother decided to call a vet, who put her
onto a governmental organization we have here known as
Fish and Wildlife, who, apparently run a bird recovery
operation.

They told the boy's mother to keep it overnight and
take it to a certain vet in the morning.

Our grandson was nearly in tears, not wanting the gull
to die. His little sister offered up some pretty
heartfelt prayers that night and his older sister
watched with a keen and caring eye.

All attention that night was focused on "Jonathan".

In the morning the family piled into the car with the
gull and headed to the vet.

Fish and Wildlife had called ahead and the vet was
expecting them.

The vet had a look. She pried open the gulls mouth and
removed the fish hook, which was attache to about eight
inches of line that the gull had taken down the throat.
Where the fish hook was attached the bird had developed
severe infection and it's biggest problem was that it
was starving to death. That explained why it made no
attempt to get away, no energy left.

The vet bathed the wound with an antibiotic, and fed
the starving bird with a high protein substance of
which the bird seemed unable to get enough.

Prognosis - the bird would do just fine. It would stay
at the vet's for a day and Fish and Wildlife would get
it in the morning, keep it until it was back to health
and then release it. The bird was a mature bird with a
huge wing span. The vet thought it likely caught a
"fish that got away" and consumed the hook with the
fish.

That bird could have landed on any beach. Ours was not
the only beach where compassionate people reside. But
there were a whole host of reasons why this beach was
the right one.

Neat little story isn't it? But you know, it was ...

No Coincidence!

A&P Anatomy And Physiology
PART 9 of 11
The Make Up Of Your Body And How It Functions

It all sounds very difficult, and confusing AND
time-consuming! However, once you see how easy it is to
provide your body with these positive factors and eliminate
harmful or negative ones, it's not so complicated.

Here is an extremely simplistic explanation. In an aging
condition, nothing unusual happens. Your body accepts what
comes its way without trying to make any changes to protect
you from them. They are gradual. They are normal. It is
vitally important to understand that these are normal
changes. Now along comes a degenerative condition: diabetes,
osteoporosis, etc. The body doesn’t like those. This is
called oxidative stress. This is not normal and your body
tries to protect you from it. It sets up a response to try
and get rid of the intruders. These are labeled as free
radicals. This response is called the “inflammatory
response”. And it is the body’s first response by bringing
in extra fluid (containing all sorts of healthful
ingredients) to wash out these free radicals. Most likely
you won’t even know this is going on till years later. But
by this action, the body is trying to neutralize the
intruders with its everyday supply of antioxidants, one of
the main healthful ingredients. That is the only way to
render them harmless. It all seems to come down to getting
rid of free radicals from your body. How can you do that,
but filling your body with antioxidants: simple but true.

But up till now you have probably taken your body for
granted. It may be running on "empty": your everyday supply
isn't adequate any longer. You probably didn't realise that
just your (external) home, you body needs regular
maintenance or a breakdown will occur.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

"Good. We are happy to have you. You can teach
the children much. These children have never been
away from here. They don't know what it is like in
other countries or to be with people from other
lands, so it is always nice when Mae and Susan
drop in and now you, of course. We even had Tim
and Sharon drop in on us a while back. That was
nice. They look like things are going very well
for them."

"I think so Riata. I didn't know they visited.
Good for them. I'd be glad to be with the kids for
a while and I'll bet you'll not keep Mother here
from helping out. She loves that."

"Alewka it is good to have you visit. I'm glad
you two decided to come. Here, let's sit and eat a
bite."

They all sat around a huge table that was
under the roof. This would have been the first
sitting. The table was large enough to accommodate
half the kids at a time, It was huge.

The rain was pelting down. There was no wind
to speak of, the rain was falling straight down.
It sounded like being inside a drum as the rain
poured down. Sam noticed that Riata had properly
ditched the orphanage so that any runoff water
that wanted to get into the orphanage would first
hit a little ditch and either soak into the ground
right there or it would flow away in the ditch.
Inside the orphanage all was dry and warm.

The warmth inside the orphanage was because of
Riata causing it to be so. Otherwise it would be
cool as it was outside the orphanage.

"Hello Mr. and Mrs. Henry. It has been a long
time since I have seen you two. How are you."

"Hello Maria. How are you. It has been a long
time. Gee, you don't look like the news reporter I
once knew." Sam gave her a wink.

"Ah Ha! You're right there. Living by higher
law sure takes away all the things we once thought
important, doesn't it?"

"It sure does Maria. I gather you like things
around here."

"Oh, Sam, this land is wonderful. The people
are terrific people and the kids are special. I
came here to be near Reno, and then I learned to
live by higher law. I could not have ever imagined
how rich and full life by higher law can be. I am
overwhelmed, daily, by what I see and do. It is
the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to
me and I shall not ever return to man's ways."

"We all find it the same, Maria. Oh, here he
is. You look like a sleepy head today, Amenti. How
are you?"

"Hello, Mr. Henry. It's nice to see you. You
sure got here early. Welcome to our little
orphanage."

"Little? You have more than a hundred kids
here. You are not a little orphanage. I am glad
you all live by higher law. This work would be
near impossible otherwise."

"We likely would not be here if it were not
for higher law, Sam. It is our way of giving
back."

"It is a wonderful way, Amenti. Keep up the
good work."

Riata rose, after eating and asked Sam and
Alewka to take a short tour while the second shift
of kids eats.

They walked through the orphanage and, as the
rain had just stopped, they walked around it. They
saw the little stream in which the kids swam from
time to time, they saw the fire circle they used
whenever the rain had not made things too damp.
And they walked again out to the road that passed
by the place. This road was not heavily travelled
but mostly foot traffic and there might be up to
forty people pass by one way or the other.

"What made you choose this site, Riata?"

"I didn't really choose it, Sam. When I
arrived here it was already occupied by many kids.
The place was a refuse dump before. There was
garbage all over the place. When I got here there
were maybe ten kids here. We all got together and
cleaned the place up. Then I built this makeshift
roof and we have been here ever since. Then Amenti
and Reno came to help, along with Maria. The rest
is history. We get one or two kids wander in every
six months or so. Sometimes we got six or eight a
month. That is how we got so many so fast, but now
it seems we have all the kids for miles around, so
they wander in less frequently now. Those that
come here are supposed to be here. They have been
led."

"I would imagine that to be true. You are
doing marvelous work here Riata. Keep it up."

"I will Mr. Henry, but I get lots of help. I
need no more credit than they."

"I know. I didn't mean it that way. I'm
impressed. The kids that come here are truly
blessed."

HA! HA! HA!

Congratulating a friend after her son and daughter got
married within a month of each other, a woman asked, "What
kind of boy did your daughter marry?"

"Oh, he's wonderful," gushed the mother. "He lets her sleep
late, wants her to go to the beauty parlor regularly, and
insists on taking her out to dinner every night."

"That's nice," said the woman. "What about your son?"

"I'm not so happy about that," the mother sighed. "His wife
sleeps late, spends all her time in the beauty parlor, and
makes them eat take-out meals!"
