What is black ice?
Have you ever been driving along on a bitterly cold night
and suddenly, without any warning, found your car sliding
all over the road? That could be black ice, a thin film of
ice on paved surfaces (such as roads) that is difficult to
see.
What is the difference between "pathos" and "bathos"?
"Bathos" is a literary term to describe the unintentional
interjection of hackneyed or trite language into an
otherwise lofty context, evoking laughter or disgust in a
failed attempt to create a grand effect. Writers don't aim
for bathos on purpose. Pathos, in a work of art, is the
quality that evokes sympathy or sorrow.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------
There Is Always A Way!
An old man lived alone in Minnesota. He wanted to spade his
potato garden, but it was very hard work. His only son, who
would have helped him, was in Prison. The old man wrote a
letter to his son and mentioned his predicament. Shortly, he
received this reply, "For HEAVEN'S SAKE Dad, don't dig up
that garden, that's where I buried the GUNS!
At 4 A.M. the next morning, a dozen police showed up and dug
up the entire garden, without finding any guns. Confused,
the old man wrote another note to his son telling him what
happened, and asking him what to do next. His son's reply
was:
"Now plant your potatoes, Dad. It's the best I could do at
this time."
Out of the ashes rose the Phoenix. From an impossible
situation a job was done. From being completely unable to do
anything he dug the garden.
How many times do we quite because we have come to the "end
of our rope" so to speak.
Somehow, someway, somewhere there is an answer to our
problem. Go deep inside and ask. Wait for the answer. Oh! It
may not come immediately but wait. It might pop into your
head when you are having lunch with someone. It might come
in a dream the next night or two or three. It might come out
of a child's mouth. It might come when the boss is balling
you out for a misdemeanor. Who knows when it will come - BUT
it will come.
The difficulty most of us have is that we live so much
within our habit structure we cannot see beyond.
Sometimes we have to get out of the box to see what's ahead.
That is true, also, of spiritual lessons. Living by higher
law requires that in the first instance you must step
outside "your box" and look at the possibility that there
are higher laws by which you may conduct your life. From
there the rest is simple. The first step is just to see the
possibility.
What would you do for your Dad in the situation above. Do
you know that ninety eight percent or greater would have
concluded they were in jail and therefore could do nothing.
What would you have done.
Most of us would have written a note to Dad saying "I'm
sorry Dad, I can't do anything. I really wish I could. Maybe
a neighbor could help. Call your brother's kids. I'm sorry
Dad."
The second step to creating success out of the impossible is
to believe it can be done. To adopt the attitude there is
nothing you cannot overcome and take on everything as a
challenge will always produce success.
So, if you have faith in you ...
There Is Always A Way!

The Make Up Of Your Body And How It Functions
Just as police are trained to detect counterfeit money, you
too can benefit from understanding your true and healthy
body. Once you recognize good ways to keep it well and
"empowered", you will want to find ways to improve all
aspects of it.
And don't get caught in the exercise or low carb/ high
carb...low fat/ high fat traps. Get yourself some really
good books, study the author's approach to nutrition,
exercise, and health in general, and see how it feels. I
read and just re-read 'French Women Don't Get Fat' Mireille
Guiliano. Talk about using some common sense! If you are
uncomfortable a particular program, leave it alone. If it
feels right, try it for a specific length of time and then
evaluate your results. You are on the first step to taking
back control: learning what works and what doesn't. And
keep a sharp eye out for additives and other chemicals. (I
am constantly amazed at the inaccurate statements on fats
and additives, and especially artificial sweeteners.) Now
that you have a better understanding of what your body is
and how it functions at optimum efficiency, you want to help
it along so you can enjoy many years of healthy living.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------
Sam sat down with them at nights and discussed
with them the changes they saw as they went from
country to country. He wanted them to observe that
the people of each place reacted with the land as
they had to in order to survive, but that each
person, while looking different, and acting out
his daily routine differently, still had the same
need to eat, drink, have shelter, and sleep. Each
had to look for these common requirements and each
of the people they had visited so far also lived
by higher law. Sam wanted all his kids to realize
that.
They knew, of course, because of the warm
welcome they had received. Yet in their
interaction with kids in the village, for example,
they knew they were dealing with others like
themselves, people who had not yet learned higher
law. They were able to witness the selfish
behavior of others and the way others expressed
their sense of values and display what was
important to them.
Sam also wanted them to witness something
else. He wanted them to see that wherever they
travelled good old "Mother Earth" was the same.
Oh, yes, in Scotland the temperature was cooler
and the land was greener, the people talked funny
and and there were plenty of buildings, while here
the people looked altogether different. Yet there
was a wonderful sameness to the land, to nature,
to the sky, water, fire and all the other things
of nature.
The kids spent time around the fire at night
and absorbed all these things Sam was pointing
out. They were receiving an education that was
more than they would receive in any other way.
They were growing and maturing in ways that would
be impossible any other way. Even the youngest
among them had grown many years in experience.
None of the children were afraid to travel the
way Sam travelled. They had long ago learned to
trust and love those who were in charge of their
lives. The kids openly and willingly followed the
examples set before them. This trip was an eye
opener for them and in its way brought each of
them closer to living by higher law.
It was time to return home. The kids were all
enjoying themselves around the fire at Mombudo's
place. The day had been a long one and enjoyable.
Hemno and Sonora had kept them occupied every
minute of everyday they were here. They even spent
one night out on the plains amongst the animals.
The lives of these kids had been enriched to a
point they would never forget. There was a bond, a
love, that developed and existed between them and
their hosts. That it was time to leave and return
home was not altogether a pleasant thought. They
didn't mind home, but they had grown to love where
they were and the people they were with and just
didn't want to leave.
The return home was as exciting as anything
could be. The children had not expected to be
greeted with such enthusiasm. The children that
had not gone anywhere were keen on finding out
what happened and the kids that had been away and
newly returned were keen on swapping stories.
All in all the excitement around the orphanage
was literally amazing. Everyday was filled with
new enthusiasm. The kids rose early, talked all
day and well into the night, around the evening
fires.
It became quite clear to the adults that the
trip idea was a great one. It was abundantly clear
all had learned a lot. The kids spoke so much
about where they had been and what they did that
the next batch wasn't quite ready to leave. They
wanted to find out as much as they could about
each place so they could make up their minds where
they wanted to go.
It was two weeks before all that was sorted
out and the next group was ready to leave. And, as
it worked out there were another 10 kids in each
group, without any hassling over destinations.
For Tlang this was all new, too. While she
lived by higher law and had been to the Henry's
before she had not been to many other places in
the world, so it was an education for her as well.
This time around the adults also changed their
destinations. It meant there was a lively mix and
all was new to everyone.
Those who went to Miguele's and Abetta's place
in Matto Grosso, had a wonderful time and met
Riata's sister and her husband. These two had an
orphanage, too. It seemed that is what they did.
Oomano and Romano spent a good deal of time with
the kids and they played with the orphans there,
too. Miguele also spent a lot of time with the
kids.
He took them to the shrine at the first
orphanage set up by Riata. He told them the story
and took them inside to meet the children there.
The love, radiance and intensity of feelings were
so great for these kids it was nearly
overwhelming.

HA! HA! HA!
A minister gave a talk to the Lions Club on sex. When he got
home, he couldn't tell his wife that he had spoken on sex,
so he said he had discussed horseback riding with the
members.
A few days later, she ran into some men at the shopping
center, and they complimented her on the speech her husband
had made.
She said, "Yes, I heard. I was surprised about the subject
matter, as he's only tried it twice. The first time he got
so sore he could hardly walk, and the second time he fell
off!"
