How long do fish live?
There's wide variation in the life spans of fish. Some live
only a few weeks or months, while others (such as the
sturgeon), live as long as fifty years! How do we determine
the age of a fish? We look at the "growth rings" or scales
found in the small bones of the inner ears. The rings
correspond to seasonal changes in the environment and can be
compared to the annual rings of tree trunks.
What ten-year-old girl invented glow-in-the-dark paper,
beating out NASA, which had been working on a similar
project?
Ten-year-old Rebecca Schroeder thought it would be really
neat if people could write in the dark. For most of us,
that's as far as those kinds of ideas get. But Becky started
looking into it. She thought of using bioluminescence, like
what fireflies emit, but that didn't work out. Then she
thought of using phosphorescence, substances that glow after
having been exposed to light. She took phosphorescent paint
and painted a clipboard, then put a piece of paper on top.
The paper glowed and she could see well enough to write in
the dark. She patented her invention and began to improve
upon it. By the time she was twelve, she'd invented the
"Glo-Sheet," and was approached by both the US Navy and
NASA. Both were interested in buying her invention. At
first, the space agency thought Becky might be a former
employee, as NASA had been working on a similar project.

Sub-$100 laptop design unveiled Image of Professor Nicholas
Negroponte
The laptop for the world's children should be durable and
self-reliant Nicholas Negroponte, chairman and founder of
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Labs, has
been outlining designs for a sub-$100 PC.
The laptop will be tough and foldable in different ways,
with a hand crank for when there is no power supply.
Professor Negroponte came up with the idea for a cheap
computer for all after visiting a Cambodian village.
His non-profit One Laptop Per Child group plans to have up
to 15 million machines in production within a year.
A prototype of the machine should be ready in November at
the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in
Tunisia.
Children in Brazil, China, Egypt, Thailand, and South Africa
will be among the first to get the under-$100 (£57)
computer, said Professor Negroponte at the Emerging
Technologies conference at MIT.
The following year, Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney plans
to start buying them for all 500,000 middle and high school
pupils in the state.
Professor Negroponte predicts there could be 100 million to
150 million shipped every year by 2007.
Virtually indestructible
The laptops will be encased in rubber to make them more
durable, and their AC adaptors will also act as carrying
straps.
The Linux-based machines are expected to have a 500MHz
processor, with flash memory instead of a hard drive which
has more delicate moving parts.
Mock-up of the sub-$100 laptop The laptop will be more
rugged and flexible than ordinary ones They will have four
USB ports, and will be able to connect to the net through
wi-fi - wireless net technology - and will be able to share
data easily.
It will also have a dual-mode display so that it can still
be used in varying light conditions outside. It will be a
colour display, but users will be able to switch easily to
monochrome mode so that it can be viewed in bright sunlight,
at four times normal resolution.
When Professor Negroponte saw the benefits of donated
notebook PCs that Cambodian children could carry around with
them, he immediately set about planning the sub-$100
machines.
The project has some big-name supporters on board, including
Google, which is working on thin-client applications. Thin
client computing means several machines can share programs
when linked up to a central "brain", or server.
Making them so cheap would mean that developing nations
would be able to afford to bulk-buy them, although Professor
Negroponte thinks that even $100 remains too expensive for
some.
He said he is committed to the idea that children all over
the world should be equipped with technology so that they
can tap into the educational and communications benefits of
the net.
Power is a big issue for developing nations in particular
when it comes to technology, which is why the hand crank
will be fitted to supply extra juice when it is needed.
By using innovative technologies, such as electronic ink
displays, the MIT team thinks it can reduce power
consumption even further on the computers. Such displays
require very little power to work.
The Simputer is a handheld solution for developing nations
There have been several projects to build and distribute
cheap computers for developing nations in order to close the
digital divide.
A sub-£100 box, called Nivo, has been developed by UK
not-for-profit group, Ndiyo. It runs on open source software
and works as a thin client.
The Simputer has also been developed for developing nations.
It is a cheap handheld computer designed by Indian
scientists.

Some Thoughts On Chelation Therapy
Learning About Possible
Metal Toxicity In Your Body
PART 8 of 11
And their Summary: quote Chelation therapy with EDTA has
been suggested for many conditions. Chelation may play a
role in the treatment of lead or heavy metal toxicity. It
should be used only under the direct supervision of a
qualified health care provider. Chelation has not been shown
to be effective for any other condition. Recent studies
suggest that chelation may not be beneficial as a treatment
for clogged arteries or peripheral vascular disease.
Chelation may cause many adverse effects or death. It should
be avoided by patients with heart, kidney or liver disease;
patients with conditions affecting blood cells or the immune
system; pregnant or breast-feeding women; and children.
Speak with your health care provider if you are considering
chelation therapy. The information in this monograph was
prepared by the professional staff at Natural Standard,
based on thorough systematic review of scientific evidence.
The material was reviewed by the Faculty of the Harvard
Medical School with final editing approved by Natural
Standard.
Acceptable uses for chelation from what I read as suggested
by the mainstream medical community include two groups: lead
toxicity and heavy metal poisoning. Chelation therapy with
calcium disodium EDTA is an accepted therapy in medical
institutions for lead toxicity. Studies have demonstrated
that chelation therapy reduced lead levels in the body and
slowed progression of kidney failure in people with lead
toxicity. Chelation therapy may also be used when toxic
levels of iron, arsenic, or mercury are present.
So my concern is about getting enough tests and objective
second opinions to determine that metals are indeed the
cause of your symptoms. In turn, that means YOU have to have
enough courage to ask the right and maybe recurring
questions and to insist on a meaningful discussion with your
health care practitioner. That might be a challenge. But I
urge you to persevere. Do all the research you can do.
Pretend you are sitting beside me right now and asking the
same questions. Incidentally, you will bet much better
results if you ask instead of tell or demand answers. I
suspect this might be a prolonged diagnostic search. Do not
take any shortcuts. Take your time and be thorough. This is
your body: no one elses. Only definitive testing will show
what is needed to be removed.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

"Gee, I think I'm going to like that. Mom told
us about that trip she took with Uncle David. She
told us how Dad swept her off her feet and she
fell in love. She told us how Dad had worked on
learning higher law and how he surprised her by
telling her he knew the way, the first night of
their honeymoon. They have been working with
AliAnn and me and we have been learning higher
law. I don't really understand why men want to
stay away from it. All of it makes so much sense."
"Out of the mouth of babes." Ben was surprised
at the level of thinking and understanding this
young teen had.
"Sammy, you are in a very fortunate position.
You are being raised by two who live by higher
law. You have seen nothing else. If you would like
to hear a story of real hard suffering at the
hands of man's system you should have a long talk
with Romano. Before your Mom and Dad were able to
reach him and help him, he was a gang member in
Matto Grosso. He did all sorts of things then he
would never think of doing now. He had been
stabbed and left for dead when your Mom and Dad
found him." Sam was wanting Sammy to see the full
gamut of experiences and situations in which man
gets involved.
Sammy looked over at Romano, who knew what
this conversation was about, and was looking right
back at Sammy. "That's right, Sammy. Maybe
tomorrow we'll talk." were the thoughts Sammy
received in his mind.
"You see, Sammy, we all come from different
backgrounds, different training, different
upbringing, different school systems, different
levels of belief. A person must make a decision
right from where they stand and proceed to learn
higher law from there. They must learn how to
control their emotions. They must re-learn what
their education taught them about things like
money, sex, material goods, emotions, the values
of life. All these things have been taught
differently in each location than what you have
learned here."
"Grandpa, I can see that I am fortunate in
that I have those who live by higher law
surrounding me, and that I am being taught higher
law but still a person, even me, must make the
decision to go that way. At least that is what Mom
and Dad say."
"They're right, Sammy. Even though you have
been taught it is not an automatic. To make the
final step, that is a decision you must make and I
suspect your Mom and Dad are preparing you for
that right now. All men, no matter how
knowledgeable, must make that decision. They must
take that final step. There is nothing scary or
difficult about it. Many do it without even
noticing they have done it, but still it must be
taken."
"Grandpa, what happened to you? You have
changed since the last time I saw you. You're as
big as Dad now and your hair is all white."
"Sammy, I had an experience over in Matto
Grosso. The church there was using the people and
milking them of their money in exchange for
nothing. The whole scene is a huge fraud. I became
angry when I saw the church doing nothing in the
way of offering truth, offering guilt instead, and
then asking money for it. They had four stations
set up around the shrine Miss Riata created and
which is truly helping people. These stations set
up by the church were doing nothing but asking for
money, riding on the euphoric feeling folks came
away with, from the shrine. In my anger I placed
shields around the four stations so the people
could not see them. That stopped the flow of money
for the church and allowed the people to keep
their money. It was much the same as Jesus when he
turned over the tables of the money changers in
the temple. That kind of thing goes on all the
time. When I was done Jesus paid me a visit and
changed my countenance. He installed me in the
White Brotherhood, which is a group, living by
higher law, who work aiding mankind in much the
same way Sien here helped your Mother learn higher
law."
Sammy looked at Sien. Sien nodded.
"Sometimes, Sammy, there are those, all by
themselves in the midst of a crowd who appear to
the crowd to be swimming upstream. These few are
well along in learning higher law and need only a
gentle lead in the right direction in order for
them to make it. They are constantly within an
environment where the crowd tries to keep them.
The crowd doesn't want them to leave to another
way, so the competition they face is sometimes
fierce. They need men and women like your Grandpa
to give them a quiet little nudge here and there
and then they are able to live by higher law.
That's the kind of work your Granddad does now. It
is special kind of work. Plus he helps us out
whenever we have big disasters and the like."

"No man can always be right. So the struggle is to do

HA! HA! HA!
Once upon a time, there were four people... Their names were
Everybody, Somebody, Nobody and Anybody.
Whenever there was an important job to be done, Everybody
was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
When Nobody did it, Everybody got angry because it was
Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Somebody would do it, but Nobody
realized that Nobody would do it.
So consequently Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did
what Anybody could have done in the first place!!
