What does a vampire look like?

Forget the suave and handsome (and pale) Dracula. Most
vampires are described in folklore as flushed and ruddy,
with swollen bodies (not thin!) and bloated faces (yes,
sounds like a corpse, alright). Often, they can be
identified because they're sitting up in the grave.

What are some ways to protect yourself from vampires?

Don't despair! According to folklore, there are a number of
ways to protect yourself from vampires, including the
ever-popular wearing of garlic or a religious symbol. You
can slow a vampire down by giving him something to do, like
pick up poppy seeds or unravel a net. (They're quite
compulsive.) Cross water and he can't follow. If you can
find the body, give it a bottle of whiskey or food so it
doesn't have to travel. If that doesn't work, either shoot
the corpse (may require a silver bullet) or drive a stake
through the heart. And remember, the vampire won't enter
your dwelling unless invited. Just say no.

Outrage at Zimbabwe bugging plan

Zimbabwe's opposition and civil society groups have
expressed anger at a proposed law to monitor communications.

The bill proposes a monitoring centre, apparently with
Chinese technology, that would eavesdrop on telephone,
internet and other communications.

The government says the bill is similar to anti-terror laws
elsewhere to protect people from organised crime.

Parliament began public hearings on the Interception of
Communications Bill on Wednesday amid heated exchanges.

"One of the key obligations on internet service providers
(ISPs) is to install equipment which would allow them to
interface between the ISP and the monitoring service," Jim
Holland, spokesman for the Zimbabwe Internet Service
Providers' Association, told the BBC News website.

Technology

This equipment would have to be installed at the expense of
the ISP.

Mr Holland said his organisation would seek clarification on
whether the bill applied to all companies that provide
internet services to the public.

Have Your Say

Asked whether Zimbabwe had the technological capacity to
implement the changes proposed in the bill, Mr Holland said:
"I would imagine it is now here. There are obviously now
close links with the Chinese, who are specialists in the
interception of radio and internet communication."

Zimbabwean telephone calls are already monitored.

"The Posts and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said
the interface was already there - all that is required is to
connect to the monitoring centre," Mr Holland said.

Monitoring internet communication is nevertheless more
complicated than monitoring phone calls, and Zimbabweans
using an overseas-based webmail service would be able to
avoid bugging by the authorities in Zimbabwe.

The government has defended the proposal in the name of
national security.

"The advancement in technology today means that no one is
safe at all from the source of terrorism, mercenarism and
organised crime," Brig Gen Mike Sango of the Zimbabwe
Defence Force told the hearing.

"A piece of legislation has been long overdue on this
particular problem."

'Carte blanche'

Critics raised concerns that the bill does not make
provision for decisions to be reviewed by the judiciary.

"An aggrieved person is given a right to appeal to the
Minister (of Transport and Communications), who is neither
independent nor impartial. He authorises the interception
and monitoring in the first place," argued Wilbert Mandinde,
legal officer of the Media Institute for Southern Africa in
Zimbabwe.

The opposition Movement for Democratic Change agreed: "It
seems to give carte blanche - the minister is the judge and
the jury, it violates the whole concept of the separation of
powers," said MDC legal adviser Jessie Majome.

A special report will be tabled before parliament after the
public hearings.

President Robert Mugabe's government already faces criticism
for laws that curtail free speech and movement.

Mr Holland said the lack of judicial oversight in the bill
was similar to certain provisions of an earlier
communications law that were overturned by the High Court in
2004 on grounds of being unconstitutional.

Your Heart And Your Courage:
Both Belong To You
Both Must Be Nurtured And Respected
PART 1 of 11

I thought it would be interesting to elaborate on an
email I recently received. A reader asked me to explain
what her doctor meant when he told her that she had
something wrong with the apex of her heart and the
lower left side. From the wording of her request, I
made couple of assumptions. One was that she had no
idea what he meant and did not have the courage to ask
for clarification. And secondly, I felt that English
might not be her first language which might explain the
fear of not asking for more information or a simpler
explanation. The more I thought about her request, the
more I wanted to elaborate for others how the heart
functions and its basic anatomy. But I also wanted to
give you a push to become more assertive if you feel
intimidated by medical or health care professionals.

As always, please use this information for general
interest and not for any other important decisions. I
will give some very simplistic explanations of the
anatomy and physiology of the heart. Then we will take
a short “journey” through the cardiovascular system.
Lastly, I want to give you some hints or suggestions on
asking for better explanations from any health care
professional. Because once you understand what goes on
in your body, you will feel much more in control and
want to actively participate in further treatment, if
it’s needed. For that you need to build up your
courage. You have it: it may just need a little
polishing.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

-----------------------END DISCLAIMER

The cover story today is less imposing, less serious, at
least on the surface, than most stories in today's news. Yet
is shows the kind of thing that is happening around the
world in response to "terrorism".

I put terrorism in quotes because it is my belief it is used
as the excuse for governments to finally do what they want.
The more they can monitor the more they can control. The
more they control the more likely they are to be picking
people up for saying things against the government. Sooner
or later, because of power, the government becomes the
terrorist.

The same kind of thing is happening in the US with mid-term
elections happening in November. The rhetoric today is about
terrorism. That kind of speaking will accelerate to a
crescendo in November, what with everyone wanting to get
your vote. Years ago they used to buy your vote. Today they
use fear to drive you to the polls.

There is a subtlety to this business of monitoring. It goes
along with another report I read the other day about
inserting a small chip under the skin of every US soldier.
That chip would not only give identification but complete
access to one's medical records.

It is a very small leap from there to two other serious
situations. First, it wouldn't take much to have any and all
information on such a chip and second, it wouldn't take much
to mount a campaign telling the population how it made so
much sense, would save so much money and would save lives if
we all did this.

From there all you would have to do is stick out your arm
for a reader to pay for your groceries, do your banking,
travel, seek medical attention, vote or do anything you were
inclined to do. Sounds simple doesn't it? And at that point
your coming and going, your entering into and your exiting
from would all be at the hands of government policy.

The truth is we are only a hair width away from the most
feared of conditions, yet we so willingly will be led to the
slaughter. And the government will use the current state of
unrest and uneasiness to make sense out of the plan to
install a chip in everyone. Then it will be mandatory, What
will the punishment be if we don't? They will have it far
enough advanced that you will not get services if you do not
comply. It will be much like trying to get into a hotel
today without a credit card, same thing.

You see why I continually speak of the need for one to find
peace within themselves? You see why it is so necessary that
folks find a niche to become peaceful, centered, clear
thinking? One's future welfare depends upon it.

Peace is the exclusive domain of each individual. Each has
the responsibility to choose it and work on maintaining it.
Peace is not up to governments - it is up to the individual.

Only those who are prepared to look honestly at all
sides of a situation have a chance at peace. Only those who
are prepared to stand alone will have a chance at their
Maker's peace and prosperity. Is that you?

Peace and prosperity can be yours right where you are if
that ever becomes a desire. That is what the story The Saga
of Pinehill is about, a blueprint for you to follow. If you
want peace and prosperity within your own life then purchase
