How frequently do meteorites hit Earth?

Looking ahead: When was Thanksgiving declared a national
holiday?

Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday in 1863,
following an intense campaign by Sarah Josepha Hale, editor
of a ladies' magazine. President Abraham Lincoln officially
set the date as the last Thursday of November. The date was
moved up one week by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in
1939, to stimulate the Depression economy (how that worked,
I have no idea). Two years of public protest followed.
Congress then passed a law establishing the fourth Thursday
in November as the official holiday.

What's the difference between a meteor and a meteorite?

It's simple: a meteorite is what you call a meteor that has
hit land (or water).

UN warns of soaring Afghan opium

Poppy cultivation in Afghanistan is expected to soar by 59%
this year, providing 92% of the world's supply of opium, the
United Nations says.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime predicted a 6,100-tonne
harvest of opium, with much of the rise coming in Taleban
strongholds in the south.

The US is the main backer of a huge drive to rid Afghanistan
of opium.

But a top US drugs official warned on Saturday Afghanistan
could be "taken down by this whole drug problem".

The $2.7bn drugs trade accounts for about a third of
Afghanistan's economy.

Signs of collapse

The Vienna-based Office on Drugs and Crime said in its
report that poppy cultivation in Helmand province alone,
which has seen a sharp rise in Taleban-led attacks on
international troops, had risen by 162% since last year.

Only six of the country's 34 provinces are opium-free, the
report says.

Office chief Antonio Maria Costa said after presenting his
report to Afghan President Hamid Karzai: "These are very
alarming numbers. Afghanistan is increasingly hooked on its
own drug."

Mr Costa said southern Afghanistan was showing signs of
collapse.

Rises also occurred in the north-east, where warlords and
weak government were often to blame, the report said.

"Public opinion is increasingly frustrated by the fact that
opium cultivation in Afghanistan is out of control," Mr
Costa said.

"The political, military and economic investments by
coalition countries are not having much visible impact on
drug cultivation."

He called on President Karzai to make "significant arrests
and convictions" using the judiciary that the coalition had
helped train and establish.

A massive programme to destroy poppies and offer help to
farmers to grow alternative crops has been under way for two
years.

But on Saturday, Doug Wankel, director of the US drugs
control office, said Afghanistan could be "taken down" by
drugs.

"If this thing gets out of hand, you could move from a
narco-economy to a narco-state," he said.

"Then you have a very difficult chance for this country
being able to achieve what it needs to as a democracy and a
nation representing its people."

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Your Heart And Your Courage:
Both Belong To You
Both Must Be Nurtured And Respected
PART 2 of 11

When you discuss the body (your body) with a health
care professional, you will most likely be referring to
“left” and “right”. You NEED to clarify the appropriate
area by signing or pointing your hand to it. By that I
mean, that the doctor is facing you and sees you as you
would see your image in a mirror. You know it’s your
right: the doctor sees it as his left, but knows it is
your right. So you have to make sure that you are both
relating to the same location. In a moment you will
understand exactly what I mean. You may recall in
previous discussions of medical terminology, there is a
superior and inferior part of your body. There are many
other terms but for now, this is the one you need to
understand. Anything superior on your body will be
higher than your umbilicus (belly button) and anything
referred to as inferior will be below that imaginary
line. (It has nothing to do with intelligence or social
status.)

The easiest way for you to understand the anatomy of
the heart is to draw a box and divide it into four
equal segments. Then label the top left quadrant “right
atrium”, the lower left is labeled “right ventricle”.
The top right space is called the “left atrium” and the
last quadrant is called the “left ventricle”. You
should have four equal-sized squares. Before I add the
other structures, you need to recognize that all this
mass is muscle, with a very elaborate blood supply of
its own. But basically, this muscle is what pushes all
of your blood throughout your body: systematically and
relentlessly. No matter what is happening to your body,
this goes on at all costs. How does it do that? By
supplying the muscle with all the required nutrients
and oxygen, and by removing its wastes products. It
also tries very best to keep you from accumulating any
harmful elements such as oxidative stress or plaque in
your arteries or infections in your cells. In medical
terminology, it is difficult to separate anatomy from
physiology. While anatomy is the actual structure of
something, it’s difficult to describe it without
mentioning the functions and activities. That is
physiology.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

-----------------------END DISCLAIMER

Survival and greed are the two strongest motivations beating
within the human breast. Is there anyone out there who can
tell me how it would be possible to stop the opium trade out
of Afghanistan?

And it is growing in size and depth. How can you stop that,
spray all the poppies? Boy, you talk about an opportunity
for war. People growing the poppies and everyone associated
with the process would look at that as if you were literally
taking bread off their table, and you would be. You expect
them to take that laying down?

I had an interesting meeting this very day. We were
discussing global warming, the idea that maybe it wasn't
terrorists that caused 9/11, that it is recorded fact that a
full 60% of deaths in North America are a result of self
inflicted conditions resulting from smoking, drinking,
drugs, sex and poor diet with little or no exercise. We also
covered what was seen as increasing natural disasters etc.

All in all, most of the people in the conversation felt
uneasy about the continual news. They didn't know where to
turn or what they could do. The fact is you can do nothing
except one thing. You can learn to be your own person. You
can learn to be at peace with yourself and your world. Where
you would ordinarily take, you give. Where you would
ordinarily pass judgement, you now refrain.

Some say this seeking peace within oneself is the ostrich
sticking its head in the sand. Far from it. This world is
coming to a place where it will need strong, peaceful men
and women to aid with what is left after disease and
destruction.

You think I am speaking of end time prophesies? Not so. Just
look around you. You see the increasing drug problem. You
see the increasing tension between nations. You see the
increase in earthquakes and other natural disasters. You see
the things coming our way as a result of global warming,
whether that was promoted by man or is a natural
evolutionary thing. Add them all up and you know very deeply
we will have to deal with a lot of things in our future we
never had to think about in our past.

Being of peaceful mind and spirit will be the only way we
can handle it and if you are inclined to think that way it
could be you are one of the chosen.

Peace is the exclusive domain of each individual. Each has
the responsibility to choose it and work on maintaining it.
Peace is not up to governments - it is up to the individual.

Only those who are prepared to look honestly at all
sides of a situation have a chance at peace. Only those who
are prepared to stand alone will have a chance at their
Maker's peace and prosperity. Is that you?

Peace and prosperity can be yours right where you are if
that ever becomes a desire. That is what the story The Saga
of Pinehill is about, a blueprint for you to follow. If you
want peace and prosperity within your own life then purchase
the two books now in print. Read and study them. The way to
your own peace and prosperity is contained within their

HA! HA! HA!

A pastor was giving a lesson to a group of children on the
23rd Psalm. He noticed that one of the little boys seemed
disquieted by the phrase "Surely, goodness and mercy will
follow me all the days of my life..."

"What's wrong with that, Johnny?" the pastor asked.

"Well," answered Johnny, "I understand about having goodness
and mercy, for God is good. But I'm not sure I'd like
Shirley following me around all the time."
