TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

How many "near-Earth objects" have been discovered so far?

Is it true that a smallpox epidemic brought down a whole
empire?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

How frequently do meteorites hit Earth?

All the time. But most are really tiny (REALLY tiny, like
particles of dust) by the time they make it through our
atmosphere, and we never notice them.

What's the difference between an asteroid, a comet, and a
meteor?

According to NASA's Near-Earth Object Program, asteroids and
comets are both "near-Earth objects (NEOs)." Basically,
they're "objects" that have been pulled into orbits that
place them near Earth. Comets are made up primarily of ice,
rock, and organic compounds. They can be several MILES in
diameter and they originate in the cold outer planetary
system. Asteroids, which can be hundreds of miles in
diameter, are mostly rock, though some have metal too. They
originate in the warmer inner solar system between Mars and
Jupiter. When pieces of an asteroid or comet break off, they
often form smaller rocky objects called meteoroids. When a
meteoroid or asteroid enters the Earth's atmosphere, it
ignites. The visible streak of light you see is a "meteor"
or "shooting star".

Here's To Think On . . . with Ken Darby
------------------------------------

I Love Cowboy Logic!

ALL I NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED ON THE CATTLE RANGE

1. Never slap a man who's chewing tobacco.
2. Never kick a cow chip on a hot day.
3. There are 2 theories to arguing with a woman...neither works.
4. Never miss a good chance to shut up.
5. Always drink upstream from the herd.
6. If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.
7. The quickest way to double your money is to fold it and
put it back in your pocket.
8. There are three kinds of men:
- The ones who learn by reading.
- The few who learn by observation.
- The rest of them have to touch the electric fence to see if it's
really on.
9. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that
comes from bad judgment.
10. If you're riding ahead of the herd, take a look back every
now and then to make sure it's still there.

I love it! I love it! I don't know whether I am, in my mind,
imposing the slow rounded cowboy drawl into the words
as I read them or if it is only the clear, down to earth logic
that gets me.

However, one of the things I enjoy about cowboy humor,
poetry and logic is it's clear message and simplicity.

Living in the west as I do I get many opportunities to see,
hear and watch performances of Cowboy Poetry. What a
treat.

Yet this style of humor has deep lessons for all of us. It
keeps on telling us that regardless who we are, or who we
think we are, we are still only as human as the next person
and deserving of no more regard or respect than the
lowliest of men.

It's called being part of the human condition. We are all
members of the human family and as human beings, worthy
of respect as any other human being. Oh! you may be placed
in a spot where you can do great things. I hope you are. But
that does not entitle you to greater regard or respect than
the lowliest among us. Think on that for a while.

I had lunch the other day with a friend who is a funeral director.
He told me about a politician, who, coming late for a funeral,
wanted to be seated at the front, where he could be seen.
It came down to the "Well, don't you know who I am?" question.

My friend gently told him that he knew who he was, "and
which person seated up front would you have me remove so
you can sit there?"

So you are elected to office. Does that make you king? Or
does any other position make you king?

Cowboy logic says keep your feet on the ground. Arrogance,
self importance, and similar stupidity will usually get you more
difficulties than favors. It is the old saying, "Those who place
themselves first shall come last, and those who place
themselves last shall come first."

I Love Cowboy Logic!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Your Heart And Your Courage:
Both Belong To You
Both Must Be Nurtured And Respected
PART 3 of 11

Picture your cardiovascular (card: heart and vascular:
pertaining to a blood vessel, i.e. circulation) system
as a giant water or fluid transportation system,
delivering vital products through corridors or tubes
such as arteries and veins. Blood delivers nutrients,
oxygen, and disease-prevention elements such as lymph
to each and every cell in your body. And on the return
run, it picks up waste products to get them out of your
body. Just as a river is used to float things along:
upstream with power or downstream through gravity, so
does the circulatory system use its blood to deliver
its load. Included in this circulation is the lymphatic
system, with its protective measures to keep you
healthy or to build up protection. (Immune system) If
you have ever seen and understood the function of
canals with their locks, then recognize that this
similar elaborate system is happening in your body. The
valves are like locks and prevent back flow. This
encourages continual forward movement of your blood
throughout all parts of your body, even when it meets
resistance of some kind.

Let’s pretend you are going to take a trip through your
cardiovascular system, very simplistically. The
circulatory system runs 24/7/365.  In order not to add
to the confusion, we need a starting point. If you look
at the drawing of the four quadrants, it makes sense to
start at the top left hand corner. Pretend you are an
individual cell floating on plasma (fluid) and entering
the right atrium. (You have just come back from the
body with waste products such as carbon dioxide.) You
now flow into this chamber (space) until the area is
full. A sensor notes a certain amount of fluid and
sends a signal to shut off (by electrical impulse) any
more fluid. A “door” (valve) opens into the chamber
below called the right ventricle and you flow gently
into this space, as the heart is relaxed. Again, you
wait until the chamber is full. Now the muscles of this
part of the heart contract and push you into a “tube”
called the pulmonary artery. This propels you (floating
on the blood) to the lungs. Here you get rid of your
carbon dioxide (exchange) and pick up a fresh supply of
oxygen. You flow into the pulmonary vein “tube” and
come back into the heart, into the left atrium. In a
relaxed moment, you flow into the left ventricle. Then
as these muscles contract, you are pushed into the
aorta. From here you have a choice: either you go to
the superior part of the body, which houses the brain,
eyes, nose, ears, etc., or you can go to the inferior
part of the body, to such places as the kidneys or
bladder. To each area you will deliver your cargo of
oxygen and other elements.  When your cargo is short of
oxygen and has an abundance of carbon dioxide, it is
called de-oxygenated blood. When you get rid of the
carbon dioxide and take on oxygen, it is called
oxygenated blood (cyanotic: bluish nail beds).

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

-----------------------END DISCLAIMER

Yesterday I spoke of having a meeting with some friends and
how they appeared to be concerned about all the things going
on in the world over which they had no control.

The things they were worried about were not small things and
they were genuinely affected by moderate fear of what would
happen if a "super-bug" got out of medicine's control. What
would happen when the Greenland ice cap does melt? What
would happen if war did break out in the Middle East or
North Korea did fire a nuclear warhead at the US?

Interesting enough not one of these conditions is beyond
possibility, some are highly likely. Combine that with
anticipated water shortages, extreme heat and oil supply
running out then, on the surface, our future looks pretty
bleak.

Yet, fear not. Consider that death is a reward, not a
punishment. It is to be sought, not in the sense of
committing suicide but in the sense of welcoming it. Fear
not that event for it is a growth, one from which you would
not want to return even if you had the choice.

So, what do we do while all this stuff is going on around
us? How can we live good lives, lives free from fear? One of
the things we must do is come to terms with life itself.
Each of us must come to understand what life is, embrace it
and come to see we are worthy, wanted, needed.

Learn to go inside, to meditate and think long and deeply on
these things. Go inside, learn to find your Maker, the
real you. As you do this you will find your life becoming
more peaceful. You will find a refuge, a place where things
are still and you are secure, yet not lonely. Allow that
place to grow, flourish and become strong. Carry it with you
wherever you go. Be a "peaceful" person and let the world
see it.

Remember all these choices are yours. They are exclusively
under your control and can be affected by no one unless you
permit it. Fear not what is going on around you. Seek only
the peace within you.

Peace and prosperity can be yours right where you are if
that ever becomes a desire. That is what the story The Saga
of Pinehill is about, a blueprint for you to follow. If you
want peace and prosperity within your own life then purchase
the two books now in print. Read and study them. The way to
your own peace and prosperity is contained within their

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Garble: Where does the word "garble" come from?

From the Arabic word for "sieve" - ghirbal. At first
"garble" meant "to sort out" ans was applied to the
selection and sorting out of individual passages from a
man's writings. But the persons who made the excerpts often
edited and changed the context considerably; and so
"garbled" came to mean "mixed and mutilated."
