Did Elisha Gray ever get the credit he deserved?
Sadly, he did not. After years of litigation, Bell was
legally named the inventor of the telephone.
Whatever happened to Elisha Gray?
After his conflict with Bell, he might have FELT like
throwing in the towel. But he didn't. In 1872, Gray founded
the Western Electric Manufacturing Company, parent firm of
the present Western Electric Company.

Iran's Khatami says suicide bombers hurt Islam
By Carol Giacomo, Diplomatic Correspondent
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Iranian President Mohammed
Khatami on Friday condemned the September 11 attacks against
the United States as an atrocity and said suicide bombers
did Islam an injustice and would not go to heaven.
Three days before the fifth anniversary of the attacks that
killed nearly 3,000 people, the Shi'ite cleric urged Muslims
to work against "Islamaphobia," which he said had grown
since Islamic militants flew hijacked aircraft into the
World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field.
Two crimes were committed on September 11 -- civilians were
killed and it was done in the name of Islam, Khatami told
the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a human rights
group.
"We Muslims should condemn these atrocities even more
strongly," he said.
"Terrorist, which means killing of civilians, is a human
being that lacks morality ... (and) will not go to heaven"
and those who do it in the name of Islam "are lying," he
said.
Nearing the end of a five-city U.S. visit in which he
largely stressed themes of dialogue and co-existence,
Khatami continued to stir controversy.
A U.S.-based pro-Israel group, the Israel Project,
complained in a press release that the president from 1997
to 2005 was "working to white-wash Iran's record of nuclear
developments, support for terror and human rights
violations."
In a Time magazine interview, Khatami regretted the 1979
U.S. hostage crisis and acknowledged the Holocaust of 6
million Jews as "historical fact."
"I believe the Holocaust is the crime of Nazism. But it is
possible that the Holocaust, which is an absolute fact, a
historical fact, would be misused. The Holocaust should not
be, in any way, an excuse for the suppression of Palestinian
rights," he said.
Considered a reformist during his presidency, Khatami was
largely stymied by powerful conservative clerics. His
hard-line successor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has reinstated
conservative domestic policies, while threatening to destroy
Israel and denying the Holocaust.
As for the 1979 hostage crisis, when student radicals seized
the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and held 52 Americans for 444
days, Khatami said, "I regret the hostage crisis ... and I
sympathize with the hostages and their families for their
loss and their hurt but this was (also) a revolutionary
reaction to half a century of the U.S. taking Iran hostage."
Khatami is the most prominent Iranian to visit the United
States, outside of the United Nations' New York
headquarters, in decades. Ahmadinejad spoke at the U.N.
General Assembly last year and has requested a visa to do so
again this year.
Khatami's U.S. visit has been controversial in light of U.S.
accusations Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons, sponsors
terrorism and arms Hizbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.
At a news conference on Thursday, Khatami warned the United
States against threatening Iran. While urging a dialogue
among civilizations, he said there was too much mistrust for
Washington and Tehran to talk now.
State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters,
"The place to start when talking about the discourse of
threats is with his own president, President Ahmadinejad, in
threatening to wipe the state of Israel off the map."
Khatami told Time he got "really upset" with President
George W. Bush's designation of Iran as part of an "axis of
evil" and he praised America as a "great and big country."

Your Heart And Your Courage:
Both Belong To You
Both Must Be Nurtured And Respected
PART 7 of 11
Do not expect to know everything. You dont need to.
And dont feel uneasy or give up if you dont
understand the lingo. BUT do not accept the lingo if
you dont understand it.
Here are a few things that might be helpful the next
time you need to visit a doctors office and feel a
little frustrated because you really dont understand
what is going on or what is suggested. This will take a
bit of courage, but I guarantee that the appointment
after this one, it will be easier. Guaranteed! (But
nothing will change and the guarantee is null and void
if you dont change!)
In order to understand what is being said you need to
pay attention. I know this is so obvious, but it really
isnt. You are nervous about not understanding and you
miss a lot of the words. While you are struggling to
decipher one phrase, you miss some of the next
information. This is so frustrating and just feeds your
feelings of ignorance which in turn feed your fears. I
want you to tell yourself that you are perfectly
capable of learning anything, including this. It may
take some time, but you can learn. So believe that.
Next, lets decide right here that you have the right
to know what is going on. This is your body. You also
have the right (and obligation) to make proper
decisions for any treatment proposed for you. How can
you possibly make an informed decision as your
consent form demands, if you really dont understand
what is going to happen or what the treatment entails?
You cant. But you must.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Did you read the Cover Story today? This guy Khatami looks
like he is a candle in the window, a beacon on the path of
peace. So now what do we do?
Do we believe him and begin to work with him? Or should we
be suspicious and think his every move is a calculated step
to get us off guard?
One thing I will tell you. Someone has to make the first
step. I am ashamed it wasn't us. This man has put himself at
risk with his own people just to bring peace to them. He
does not believe in the old fundamentalism, the hard line.
He speaks as if he actually believes people should learn to
get along.
So what do you want? Do you want to keep fighting or do you
want your government to truly seek a peaceful solution to
the relationship between Iran, or for that matter all Arab
states, or would you prefer they continue to deal from the
point of military might, the threat of war?
You see, the Arabs are not the only war mongers. We are,
too. We do it thinking we must in order to maintain peace in
the world. We do it in the name of self defense - BUT we
still do it.
It's like the driver that hits a person on the street. The
driver might be as sorry as is possible for a human, but the
damage is still done, the person hit is still hurting.
That is what we are doing with our policies in the Middle
East. We are there with a threatening presence so they see
every move we make as a means of getting more out of them or
for ourselves. They do not see us as genuinely wanting to
establish peace in the area. Therefore the hard core
militants keep ratcheting up the rhetoric against us and
teaching their young to do the same.
You say, "Sorry, we don't mean to do this." BUT - the
damage is done, the hurt is still there, the pain and
remembrance of our presence keeps people ready to fight.
And at home even those of us who are not directly involved
have opinions that usually end up saying "we are Americans,
we are right". The fact is most of us sit and watch all this
and we reluctantly support our government. And when we don't
then they ratchet up the rhetoric of fear and terrorism.
How is it possible to find peace, personal peace in this
environment?
Peace and prosperity can be yours right where you are. That
is what the story The Saga of Pinehill is about, a blueprint

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Ham Actor: Why is a poor actor called a "ham"?
This theatrical slang term contemptuously applied to
low-grade actors is a shortening of the term "hamfatter".
"Hamfatter" comes from the old-tme blackface comedian's
practice of putting "ham fat" on his face-so that it would
be easy for him to remove the burnt cork after the show. All
"whiteface" actors once looked down on "blackface"
comedians; many still do.

HA! HA! HA!
Coke Please
I've always ordered beverages one simple way: "A Coke,
please."
Lately, though, this hasn't seemed to work. Waitresses now
often respond, "I'm sorry, we don't have Coke. We have
Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Mr. Pibb."
Tired of listening to the long list of soft drinks, I
thought I'd make life easier. So one day I simply asked the
snack bar clerk at a movie theater for a "dark, carbonated
beverage."
The young man behind the counter chuckled and asked, "Sir,
would you like a cylindrical plastic sucking device with
that?"
