Who built the first modern computer?
According to The New York Public Library's Book of Answers,
John V. Atanasoff, a theoretical physicist, and his
assistant Clifford Berry built the first computer that
successfully employed vacuum tubes to perform mathematical
calculations. That was back in 1942. The computer was called
the Atanasoff Berry Computer, or ABC.
Is it true that bathing was once considered harmful?
Yes. Imagine taking a real bath only once a year. (Imagine
being around people who take only one real bath a year.)
About 500 AD, many people in the Western world believed that
baths helped spread disease. They thought the water and
warmth associated with bathing made one vulnerable to deadly
vapors. This belief, coupled with a decree by the Christian
Church that exposing the skin (like, say, in a BATH) was
sinful, led people to take dry baths. They'd wipe themselves
with a dry cloth, douse on some perfume, and save the
dangerous "wet" bath for maybe once a year. When they DID
take a real honest-to-goodness wet bath, they were cautious
and wrapped themselves from head to toe in cloth immediately
after bathing.

Here's To Think On . . . with Ken Darby
------------------------------------
Attaboy Attitude!
All I Need To Know About Birthdays, I Learned
From My Cat!
Be finicky - they'll try harder to please you.
Give attitude - get attention.
If you don't like your presents, SULK.
If you get bored at your party - just curl up for a nap.
Don't stress out over your first grey whisker
Act completely unimpressed by the presents you
receive. Remember, this is your day, so if anyone bugs
you, you're allowed to hiss and spit.
Take the day off and lie in the sun. Stay out on the prowl
all night long. Demand only the most expensive fresh fish
for dinner. It's a good day to shed your inhibitions. Act
catty - toy with your presents before you tear them open.
Don't overdo it with the catnip or you'll regret it in the
morning. If you aren't getting enough attention, sharpen
your claws on somebody's leg. Don't let anything or
anyone PUT YOU OUT!
And remember...curiosity might kill you, but
birthdays won't!
Wow! Cat or not, you act like that in my house and you're
out. I do know cats have a tendency in that direction, and,
unfortunately, so do some people.
In my life I don't have time for those who are moody, or
who think they are bigger and better than anyone around
them. Life is too short, too much to do, and much to much
to be happy about to spend time near anyone who thinks
like this cat.
Attitude can make or break you. Now that should not be
a revelation, but let's have a look at some things regarding
attitude.
For example, if one is going to get ahead one has to be
aggressive. If one is going to compete, you have to be
aggressive. That's cool. Yet there are some who translate
the word "aggressive" to mean "obnoxious". I wonder
where they get that idea? Have you been too pushy?
Having the attitude of being aggressive to further your
journey toward your goal does, in no way, mean you
have to be pushy, mean, obnoxious. It only means you
have to keep your eye on your prize and work at it all the
time. Being aggressive and having an objective to reach
is no cause for bad manners. Cats might do that but you
don't want to gain that reputation.
Conversely, if you don't have a goal, an objective, a prize
you want, then it is likely you are floundering around
going in any direction others want to lead you. That
rarely offers a fruitful, happy, productive, disciplined
and prosperous life. So to some degree you have to
have an attitude. That is not to say it has to be obnoxious.
It only means you have to be determined. It means you
work everyday toward the same objective until you reach
it, without offending others in the process.
Moreover, if you really want to help yourself you will
encourage those around you to have objectives and to
become aggressive toward attaining them. Develop the
attitude of caring, encouraging, helping. Get that
"Attaboy Attitude". You will take great joy in watching
others achieve. That genuine inner happiness at the
success of another will only further your own goals,
make you a better person and permit you to help those
around you, while gaining your own objective.
How would you like to have that reputation?
Attaboy Attitude!

Your Heart And Your Courage:
Both Belong To You
Both Must Be Nurtured And Respected
PART 8 of 11
If you took this to a ridiculous end, lets picture you
standing in front of a judge. You are asked why you
consented to this procedure or took this drug, knowing
it might be a problem for you. Now you answer you
didnt know because you didnt understand what was
going on. Ignorance is not bliss. Its insanity! The
point I am making is that you do have the right to know
what is going on in your body. Moreover it is your
responsibility to know. I recently asked a gentleman
what his consent form said in regards to possible
complications for his major eye surgery. He had no
idea. He just signed it, but he didnt think anything
was listed there. Not good.
So you must find a way to ask questions that get
answers. You need to ask them in a way that it makes
you comfortable with those answers. This is not as easy
as it sounds, but lets start with bringing along a
friend. Make sure that the doctor will agree because
now the privacy laws are pretty strict. If you cant
take a friend, bring a tape recorder. And absolutely
bring paper and pen, but out of courtesy tell your
doctor what you are doing. It might SEEM, at this
point, to be easier not to pursue the right to know
concept. Please stick with it. Your health, your
integrity and your self confidence depend on your
perseverance. I guarantee that if you face your fear of
doing this, and stick with it, you will almost feel
smug when you realize what you have accomplished!
You must not feel inferior that you dont understand
the lingo. Chances are that your specific career has
language that only your and your peers know. Language
like that is developed for ease of conversation and
professional standards. But that doesnt make you any
better or worse. You are different, thats all. But now
you are stepping into another persons territory (your
doctors) and you need to understand the language. You
now have to make some important decisions.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.
-----------------------END DISCLAIMER
So where will we go today? What will we talk about? Are any
of you interested in personal peace?
There is no possible way this subject can be talked about
too much. A world of unrest only produces even more unrest.
A world that doesn't trust one another only leads to more
distrust.
In earlier columns I have mentioned that hate must be
taught. I have made the statement that some Arabs in the
Middle East are teaching their children to hate Israel. I
have no doubt that is true.
Yet look at us. How many of us teach our children not to
trust people? How many of us drive our youngsters to school
because we can no longer trust the streets? What lessons do
you think that teaches the young?
How many of you, over the evening supper table, talk in ways
that show the kids you can't trust a used car dealer, a
lawyer, a banker? How many of you talk down about your
neighbors or about the rich folks on the other side of town,
or about how silly it is to play a lottery, or how wise?
What judgments are you passing on to your children that they
will embellish when they get older and pass on to their
kids? Are you teaching your kids to get mad because a driver
passed you and then cut in too quick?
How can your children learn to be peaceful productive
citizens when you teach them all this stuff? How can they
have a life founded on peace, security, confidence and an
appreciation of life itself?
In truth you are teaching them to be uptight, just like you.
You are teaching them not to trust, just like you don't
trust and chances are you have no first hand experience with
that, but instead don't trust others because you parents
taught you that.
And so the fear and panic grows. Mistrust grows and one day
someone who is scared enough will push the wrong button. Is
that what you want or would you like to learn how to be
peaceful?
Peace and prosperity can be yours right where you are. That
is what the story The Saga of Pinehill is about, a blueprint

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Hammer and Tongs: How die we come to use the phrase "hammer
and tongs" to mean "energetically"?
The allusion is to the vim and vigor exhibited by a
blacksmith showering blows with his "hammer" upon the iron
taken from the forge fire with his "tongs".

A hungry lion was roaming through the jungle looking for

on his typewriter. The lion quickly pounced on the man
reading the book and devoured him. Even the king of the
jungle knows readers digest and writers cramp.
