Approximately how many hairs does the average person have on
his head?
About 100,000. Both men and women generally lose about 25 to
125 hairs per day, but they (usually) grow back.
What exactly is the motto of the US Postal Service?
The US Postal Service has no official motto. Many people
assume that its motto is: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat
nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift
completion of their appointed rounds." Those words, penned
by Herodotus in reference to the ancient Persian system of
mounted postal carriers, are the inscription on the New York
City General Post Office building. Other postal buildings
have different inscriptions. In fact, the inscription that
is so familiar to us was chosen by the architect of the
building, not by the US Postal Service.

Here's To Think On . . . with Ken Darby

Grit Can Earn More Pay Than Bright!
There once was a chicken farmer who lived in a small village
in China. One year, all of his chickens were afflicted with
a strange blight that caused them to lose their feathers.
The farmer was deeply concerned about this, because winter
was coming, and, if the chickens had no feathers, they would
freeze to death. So, the farmer decided to consult the two
wisest men in the land.
First, he visited Mr. Ching, the renowned scholar. Mr. Ching
leafed through all his agricultural and medicinal texts and
poured over books and scrolls well into the night. Finally,
he returned to the farmer and told him that if he crushed
the leaves of a gum tree into powder, made it into tea, and
fed it to his chickens, they would be cured.
The farmer then went to Mr. Ming, the great seer. Mr. Ming
cast stones, read tea leaves, and poked through entrails
until finally he came up with the answer: "Tea made from gum
leaves will cause feathers to stick to chicken."
Now the farmer was ecstatic. The two wisest men in the land
had given him exactly the same prescription, so, as soon as
he returned home, he took some gum leaves and made tea from
them. He mixed this with the chicken feed and fed it to his
chickens.
But it didn't work. The chickens continued to lose their
feathers, and, with the onset of winter, they all froze. The
moral of this story:
"All of Ching's courses and all of Ming's ken, couldn't get
gum tea to feather a hen!"
It figures. I like these jokes. They often have a "truth"
behind them not always obvious to the first glance.
In my lifetime I have met two terrific salesmen. These men
are fabulous men who succeed in places I can only dream of
succeeding.
One of them was a lad right off the farm. He had no
experience with sales, no experience with the city, and, as
far as I know, no experience dealing with the
"sophisticated" ways of city slickers.
But, he had experience with the land. He knew that you
planted regardless of whether the forecast was for a good
year or not. He knew you had to tend to your stock even if
it was forty degrees below zero. He knew you had to go
places and do things you would rather not, in weather that
was against you, and when it would be nice to be sitting in
front of the television in a nice warm house.
He applied those traits to his sales work. He simply knew
the the word "no" was not the answer he wanted to his
question. So he kept on going where lesser men quite. He
didn't hear "no".
Where "city men" knew that "no" meant "no" he did not. He
knew what his objective was and regardless of weather or
other circumstances he would reach it. He was not obnoxious,
he was friendly, likable, fun to be with, good natured. He
just never quite on himself, on his clients, on his
objectives.
You see, he was not yet "educated" in the ways of the city.
He was not "educated" in the ways of university men. He was
not "educated" in the game of one-upsmanship. He took on
life as life was offered. He had long ago learned on the
farm as a lad, that only when you give up does everything
cave in on you, only when you quit does the cash get low,
only when you stop does the other person become the better
salesperson.
He had no education, yet he earned much more than those with
education earned. He did not dress up in fancy suits, drive
splashy cars, nor associate with the "upper crust", yet he
earned more money than all of them. He just worked where
others would not. He just kept going where others would
quit. He just never stopped until he reached his objective.

Your Heart And Your Courage:
Both Belong To You
Both Must Be Nurtured And Respected
PART 10 of 11
No matter what the credentials are, if you cant
understand what is going on, you shouldnt go ahead.
There is always someone who has the ability to help you
understand. Ask if the nurse can help you clarify what
is meant. Dont leave until you do know. I made the
following suggestion at a seniors health gathering. I
suggested that seniors buddy up with someone and be
each others support. At first, this was received with
skepticism, but once a few tried it, it caught on and
the doctors were quite in agreement. Doctors know that
there is often a problem. I am sure they also dont
want to be faced with an angry relative when things go
wrong. Misinterpreting a procedure or the preparation
for one, or misunderstanding a diagnosis can lead to
many problems: often serious ones.
I want to add a word about drugs and their side effects
and possible complications. And again this involves
your right to know. More questions
.Would you try a
drink if you didnt know what was in it? You would ask
the person who served it what is in, right? You would
probably ask until you had enough information to make
an informed decision. You would ask people you trusted,
right? With appropriate credentials right? Would your
body, about to be treated with unknown chemicals, not
deserve the same respect? This is the reason that there
are printed documents along with any prescription. And
the intention of this document is that you read it
BEFORE you take the drug. And you would only take the
drug once you knew it would help you, right? How could
you know that if you didnt understand what was talked
about? Would it therefore not make sense to get this
all clarified before you paid for a drug or treatment.
After you had read about the side effects and or
possible complications? As the purpose of every drug is
to make a chemical change in your body, by taking the
prescribed drug, you agree it will be ok for you. You
agree you could live with any possible side effects or
complications. And yes, they happen to some people,
otherwise they would not have to be mentioned on the
document. As I have just mentioned, you need to
recognize that every chemical going into your body is a
chemical that is meant to change something. And again,
as this is YOUR body, it is your right to know what the
possible complication(s) and side effects are. Every
drug has an effect. That is why they are prescribed.
And two drugs will always have interactions: some
desired and some undesired. Do you know what they are
or could be?

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Apple is filling the news columns these days because of an
announcement session they held yesterday. It seems Apple is
now going to make a product that will download any movies
you get over the internet onto your computer, to your
television set. Personally, I think that is great. I would
be happy to purchase a movie rather than drive down to the
video store.
And it is positive news amongst the sick and weary tales of
woe usually seen. Yet, it too has its problems as far as
your's and my personal peace is concerned.
Peace comes from within. We must be aware of what is going
on within and any interruption and interference serves to
take away that peace. So as well as making the decision to
seek personal peace we must also be aware there are
thousands of things out there that will take it away from
us.
The problem is we get busy and soon forget to pay attention
to what we are being told inside. Learn to listen and that
will greatly help you remain on centre and on track.
Peace and prosperity can be yours right where you are. That
is what the story The Saga of Pinehill is about, a blueprint
for you to follow. If you want peace and prosperity within
your own life then get the two books now in print. Read and
study them. The way to your own peace and prosperity is

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Handkerchief: What is the origin of the word "handkerchief"?
The "ker" of this word comes from the Old French covrir,
meaning "to cover". The "chief" comes from chef, meaning
"head" A "kerchief" was originally a "head covering"
especially the bit of cloth used by women to cover their
heads when entering a Catholic Church. A "handkerchief" was
one carried in the hand.

Some men go on a hunting trip and separate into pairs. That
evening one hunter, Sam, returned to camp alone toting a 12
point buck.
"Where's George?" one of the men asked, noticing that Sam
had returned alone.
"He's about 6 miles back. He tripped and broke his ankle. I
left him there 'cause I figured ain't nobody 'bout to steal
him."
