How's Your View?
It is comforting to know that we choose the way we see the
world, isn't it? We choose both our view and our response to
the view. Why do I think this is comforting? Because I have
the ultimate control to change my perceptions and reactions.
And so do you! For some, this is not comforting, it's
terrifying! What would happen if you had no one to blame
your feelings on?
You've probably all heard the saying, "You'll be about as
happy as you make up your mind to be." There is so much
truth in that. I remember when I really understood that
truth. I was a young single mom with three children and had
just been awarded the custody of the children and all the
family debts. The choice was clear. Option One: "Ain't it
awful!" followed by justifiable depression. Option Two: "He
done me wrong!" followed by justifiable anger. Option Three:
"Here's a challenge!" followed by determination to create
something better than ever. Simplistic, for sure, but it
makes the point. When you know that you choose your
perception of an event or situation, you can be empowered to
choose the response to it that fits your values.
It's usually easy to find a lot of agreement for the
negative responses in life. For example, it is not difficult
to find someone to complain to, and with, in the coffee room
at work. What if you simply stopped doing that? Focused on
the positive? Or said nothing? What if you made an agreement
with yourself that whatever you said in future would be
solution-oriented rather than problem-oriented? What if you
stepped past the problem and into possible solutions! This
is not denying the problem. Of course, they need to be
identified. They just don't need all that investment of time
and emotion.
Identify and move to solution!
Remember to ask for help! It is a great compliment to others
to ask for their help. It shows confidence in their ability
to generate solutions with you...not for you!
For today, notice your focus. Is it on problems or
solutions? How quickly can you reassemble your thoughts to
say something that focuses on solutions?

Anaphylaxis: A Medical Emergency

An allergy is a frequent, recognized, tested or
suspected condition in which a certain element
(intruder) brings about a certain unwanted body
reaction. An allergic reaction is the actual activity
in which this allergy (condition) plays out. Your
immune system is equipped to react to any intruders by
bringing in processes (inflammatory process) and its
own chemicals to overcome (render harmless) or
neutralize them. The intruder is called an antigen and
it is a foreign substance, often a protein. It may be a
substance from the environment (such as chemicals,
bacteria, viruses, or pollen) or formed within the body
(such as bacterial toxins or tissue cells). So an
allergic reaction is the result of an allergen entering
your body. It is this reaction that tells you something
isn’t right and needs to be checked out.
In another very simplistic explanation, the body
realizes it will come up against this allergen
frequently, so it creates guards to deal with the
intruders, but only a specific guard per specific
intruder. That guard is called an antibody. Thus the
next time you encounter this allergen, there is already
some defence mechanism (antibody) available. The body
doesn’t have to work so hard to get rid of it. This is
what allergy shots are based on. This is being
desensitized: not being so strongly affected by things
such as pollen or dust or hair dander. In essence it
acclimatizes the intruder to the body. Each type of
antibody is unique and defends the body against only
one specific type of antigen.
For our purposes, the antigen and the allergen are both
intruders which cause the body to activate its immune
response. In the medical field, there is a difference.
Histamines and antihistamines are chemicals that are
very involved in this type of reaction. Histamine is
released by the body as the allergen intrudes. As
already mentioned the body tries to set up preventative
measures. And this is often the release of histamine.
But an antihistamine is a chemical that the medical
community has produced to react to this reaction. Often
the histamine itself might cause a problem, so it is
“quietened” to reduce that effect. Without going into
too much detail here, steroids are used to create this
reaction. Essentially by giving this type of drug, you
are preventing the body’s own defence mechanisms from
doing their job. But this is all part of the medical
model of treatment. Some examples of antihistamines are
Benadryl and diphenhydramine; and corticosteroids, such
as prednisone. These may be given to further reduce
symptoms. If you are using these types of drugs, I
would encourage you to have regular liver testing done.
I would also suggest you find alternatives to their
long-term use. You should do your own in-depth

Gee! i might have some good news today - a little anyway.
Remember yesterday when I was speaking of a super-bug? Well
there is one that keeps lingering in the background, the
black plague. It is the bug that killed millions in Europe
centuries ago. Yes, it is still hanging around and it kills
two or three hundred people a year around the world. The
potential for it to get loose is enormous.
Well, it truly looks like science has finally found the
answer to that problem. They have found out how it works and
almost by accident came across a solution to the insidious
nature of the bug. They now believe they are not far from
being able to vaccinate against it.
This bug is a real bad one folks. That science now has the
antidote is nothing short of miraculous and something for
which each one of us should be personally and deeply
thankful for.
The world is no longer a nice place. While science has been
working on this problem there are terrorists elsewhere in
the world working on ways to deliver such bugs to the
masses. So let us hope we will find answers to a bunch of
other questions like this one.
For example I am one who thinks the world is naive in its
selection and use of computers. I know the continual
argument over buying a Windows machine or buying an Apple.
But let's go beyond that. Let's consider them, for the
moment at least, as if they were equal. Presently Apple
machines do not get viruses and it is designed so it is very
hard for a virus to do any damage to the machines or the
system. Now, with terrorists funding banks and banks of
technicians to come up with computer viruses to throw at the
world of Windows wouldn't it be just prudent to buy an
Apple?
Consider the possibility of one real aggressive virus
shutting down the worlds financial computers for ten to
fifteen days. Do you want that to happen? It easily could
you know. Moreover when Microsoft puts its new Operating
System - Vista to the retail market there is the likelihood
of that kind of thing happening. Indeed the test versions
have been out in technicians hands for some time now and it
wouldn't surprise me the program is already in the hands of
terrorists.
The point here folks has nothing to do with our love of
Apple or Microsoft. It has only to do with what is prudent.
Some of you will say "Yeah, but then they will come up with
a virus for the Mac." My response to that is that it appears
like a defeatist attitude. Sure they will go to work on
building a virus for a Mac but we buy ourselves a big bunch
of time. By the way military forces around the world are
buying Macs for this very reason - security.
So we once again arrive at the place where we must decide
what we are going to do with our lives. Oh, we can go out
and buy a Mac but that isn't what I'm talking about. We
can't just arbitrarily go out yet and get a vaccination
against the black plague. That will be a while. But one
thing is sure - all these things still keep our heads, minds
and hearts busy and fearful. They are the things over which
we have no control an it is somewhat disconcerting. And it
should be. Yet how can we live our lives properly with a
paranoid attitude? How can we make right decisions when our
underlying attitude, one that grabs us everyday, is fearful,
at least in part?
The truth is we cannot. We must make the personal firm
decision to seek peace within our own lives. It is only from
this platform that sound decisions can be made concerning
your own life and the lives of your youngsters. Only from
the point of view of peace, of a heart that is still and
confident, of a mind that is clear and unafraid can come
sound decisions. It is vital to your well being.
Peace and prosperity can be yours right where you are. That
