How does a polygraph machine tell when someone is lying?
Polygraphs measure a person's pulse rate, blood pressure,
and respiration simultaneously and trace impulses for these
functions on moving graph paper. The idea behind polygraph
tests is that a person is unable to control respiration,
pulse, and blood pressure and that these functions are
linked to a person's emotional state. A trained examiner
asks the person being tested a series of control questions
(such as What is your name? Where do you live?), as well as
key questions related to the crime (such as Did you murder
your husband?). The examiner will check to see whether the
person's physical functions fluctuated from the control
questions (which shouldn't arouse strong emotion) to the
pivotal ones. If they did (say, pulse rate and blood
pressure went up during the tricky questions), then the
person is judged to be lying.

Iraq torture 'worse after Saddam'
Allegations of severe torture have regularly emerged from
Iraq Torture may be worse now in Iraq than under former
leader Saddam Hussein, the UN's chief anti-torture expert
says.
Manfred Nowak said the situation in Iraq was "out of
control", with abuses being committed by security forces,
militia groups and anti-US insurgents.
Bodies found in the Baghdad morgue "often bear signs of
severe torture", said the human rights office of the UN
Assistance Mission in Iraq in a report.
The wounds confirmed reports given by refugees from Iraq, Mr
Nowak said.
He told journalists at a briefing in Geneva that he had yet
to visit Iraq, but he was able to base his information on
autopsies and interviews with Iraqis in neighbouring Jordan.
"What most people tell you is that the situation as far as
torture is concerned now in Iraq is totally out of hand,"
the Austrian law professor said.
"The situation is so bad many people say it is worse than it
has been in the times of Saddam Hussein," he added.
Brutal methods
The UN report says detainees' bodies often show signs of
beating using electrical cables, wounds in heads and
genitals, broken legs and hands, electric and cigarette
burns.
Bodies found at the Baghdad mortuary "often bear signs of
severe torture including acid-induced injuries and burns
caused by chemical substances".
Many bodies have missing skin, broken bones, back, hands and
legs, missing eyes, missing teeth and wounds caused by power
drills or nails, the UN report says.
Victims come from prisons run by US-led multinational forces
as well as by the ministries of interior and defence and
private militias, the report said.
The most brutal torture methods were employed by private
militias, Mr Nowak told journalists.
The report also says the frequency of sectarian bloodletting
means bodies are often found which "bear signs indicating
that the victims have been brutally tortured before their
extra-judicial execution".
It concludes that torture threatens "the very fabric of the
country" as victims exact their own revenge and fuel further
violence.
Mr Nowak said he would like to visit Iraq in person, but the
current situation would not allow him to prepare an accurate
report, because it would not be safe to leave Baghdad's
heavily guarded Green Zone where the Iraqi government and US
leadership are situated.

What does an anaphylactic reaction “look like”? Here
are the signs and symptoms. As nurses we are taught to
pay attention to people from the time of an injection
to about 15 to 20 minutes later. But the reaction can
be slow in coming. Symptoms develop rapidly, often
within seconds or minutes, but sometimes, they take up
to four hours after the allergen has been introduced.
Then it’s hard to recall what had gone before.
Respiratory symptoms include difficulty breathing,
wheezing, abnormal (high-pitched) breathing sounds,
nasal congestion, and a cough. If you analyze those,
you will recognize they are the outcome of fluid in the
respiratory tract. And that area only wants air. So in
essence, you would be drowning.
Circulatory symptoms include confusion, slurred speech,
rapid or weak pulse, blueness of the skin (cyanosis),
including the lips or nail beds, fainting,
light-headedness, dizziness, anxiety, sensation of
feeling the heart beat (palpitations). Here we are
dealing with a lack of oxygen going to vital centers.
And when you can’t have an adequate amount of blood
with fresh oxygen (oxygenated) being exchanged for
blood carrying unwanted carbon dioxide (a waste
product), it will result in these symptoms.
Integumentary (skin) symptoms include hives,
generalized itching, skin redness. This is the
histamines at work. Lastly, gastrointestinal symptoms
include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain
or cramping.

Winning Is NOT Everything!
Good Day folks! My wife and I have just come through a most
pleasant couple days. We live at a lake and there are not
many people in our neighborhood. As a result, when the
school year begins we find we are the only ones left on our
beach.
A couple days ago some dear friends from the city we used to
live in gave us a call and we arranged for them to come out
and visit. We had a great time.
We sat around the kitchen table and talked. We ate and had
coffee. He and I play music so we spent time on the keyboard
and guitar. The ladies played cards. In the evening we
either played cards or dominoes. And I noticed something.
I noticed we didn't play to win. That is to say winning was
not the main thrust of our games. We found that being with
friends was more important than winning. We found that
sharing this time together was more important than winning.
We found that "socializing" was more important than winning.
We found that our enjoyment of togetherness was more
important than winning. And we had a terrific time.
The point I am getting to is that some, particularly the
super competitive, feel that winning is the only thing. It
is a trait found in a high percentage of people in North
America. And that causes trouble. It breaks up
relationships, friendships, companies, partnerships and even
business deals. Where it comes to international relations it
can and is proving to be deadly.
It is quite possible and highly preferable to have
relationships where everybody comes away feeling they have
both contributed and gained. That can be wholly healthy for
all. That can work with foreign relations as well as
personal relations.
So all you need do is follow the law, "As ye sow, so shall
ye reap." If you want trouble - go for the win at all costs. If you
want lasting, productive, fruitful, enjoyable, healthy
relationships where the other side wants to maintain the
relationship, then act like you want the same.
This kind of relationship comes from clear headed thinkers.
That means a person must first of all be a peaceful person
and want peaceful relationships. They must be willing to
permit give and take. They must be willing to permit others
to lead. They must be willing to enjoy each other.
Learn what relationships are and what they can be. Learn the
road to being a peaceful person.
Peace is a personal decision and can be yours
right where you are. That is what the story The Saga of
