TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

Who invented the lie detector and what comic book heroine
did he also create?

Are rabbits rodents?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Why can't polygraph test results be admitted into court?

The outcome of a lie detector test is dependant upon the
skill of the test giver, making them somewhat unreliable.
Moreover, not everyone believes they work. Some
psychologists aren't even convinced they work.

Is there really such a thing as truth serum?

Well, sort of. In the early 1920's, an American
anesthesiologist named T.S. House popularized a new
anesthetic called scopolamine by calling it "truth serum".
According to House, the anesthetic induced patients emerging
from unconsciousness to tell the truth, even if they didn't
wish to. Scopolamine became even more famous after it was
said to have caused a gang of men to confess to an Alabama
ax murder. The legendary ability of scopolamine to force
truth-telling has not been medically justified. The use of
later drugs, such as sodium amytal and sodium pentothal, as
truth serum is also controversial. The latter two drugs
depress higher brain functions, such as reasoning, and may
make a person more talkative and open. But, then, so does
alcohol. So, no, there really is no drug guaranteed to make
a person tell the truth. Only in the movies.

Tips And Tidbits

Tolerance: A Two-Way Street

By Charles Krauthammer of
The Washington Post

Religious fanatics, regardless of what name they give their
jealous god, invariably have one thing in common: no sense
of humor. Particularly about themselves. It's hard to
imagine Torquemada taking a joke well.

Today's Islamists seem to have not even a sense of irony.
They fail to see the richness of the following sequence. The
pope makes a reference to a 14th-century Byzantine emperor's
remark about Islam imposing itself by the sword, and to
protest this linking of Islam and violence:

· In the West Bank and Gaza, Muslims attack seven churches.

· In London, the ever-dependable radical Anjem Choudary
tells demonstrators at Westminster Cathedral that the pope
is now condemned to death.

· In Mogadishu, Somali religious leader Abubukar Hassan
Malin calls on Muslims to "hunt down" the pope. The pope not
being quite at hand, they do the next best thing: shoot
dead, execution-style, an Italian nun who worked in a
children's hospital.

"How dare you say Islam is a violent religion? I'll kill you
for it" is not exactly the best way to go about refuting the
charge. But of course, refuting is not the point here. The
point is intimidation.

First Salman Rushdie. Then the false Newsweek report about
Koran-flushing at Guantanamo Bay. Then the Danish cartoons.
And now a line from a scholarly disquisition on rationalism
and faith given in German at a German university by the
pope.

And the intimidation succeeds: politicians bowing and
scraping to the mob over the cartoons; Saturday's craven New
York Times editorial telling the pope to apologize; the
plague of self-censorship about anything remotely
controversial about Islam -- this in a culture in which a
half-naked pop star blithely stages a mock crucifixion as
the highlight of her latest concert tour.

In today's world, religious sensitivity is a one-way street.
The rules of the road are enforced by Islamic mobs and
abjectly followed by Western media, politicians and
religious leaders.

The fact is that all three monotheistic religions have in
their long histories wielded the sword. The Book of Joshua
is knee-deep in blood. The real Hanukkah story, so absurdly
twinned (by calendric accident) with the Christian festival
of peace, is about a savage insurgency and civil war.

Christianity more than matched that lurid history with the
Crusades, an ecumenical blood bath that began with the
slaughter of Jews in the Rhineland, a kind of preseason
warm-up to the featured massacres to come against the
Muslims, with the sacking of the capital of Byzantium (the
Fourth Crusade) thrown in for good measure.

And Islam, of course, spread with great speed from Arabia
across the Mediterranean and into Europe. It was not all
benign persuasion. After all, what were Islamic armies doing
at Poitiers in 732 and the gates of Vienna in 1683? Tourism?

However, the inconvenient truth is that after centuries of
religious wars, Christendom long ago gave it up. It is a
simple and undeniable fact that the violent purveyors of
monotheistic religion today are self-proclaimed warriors for
Islam who shout "God is great" as they slit the throats of
infidels -- such as those of the flight crews on Sept. 11,
2001 -- and are then celebrated as heroes and martyrs.

Just one month ago, two journalists were kidnapped in Gaza
and were released only after their forced conversion to
Islam. Where were the protests in the Islamic world at that
act -- rather than the charge -- of forced conversion?

Where is the protest over the constant stream of
vilification of Christianity and Judaism issuing from the
official newspapers, mosques and religious authorities of
Arab nations? When Sheik 'Atiyyah Saqr issues a fatwa
declaring Jews "apes and pigs"? When Sheik Abd al-Aziz
Fawzan al-Fawzan, professor of Islamic law, says on Saudi TV
that "someone who denies Allah, worships Christ, son of
Mary, and claims that God is one-third of a trinity. . . .
Don't you hate the faith of such a polytheist?"

Where are the demonstrations, where are the parliamentary
resolutions, where are the demands for retraction when the
Mufti Sheik Ali Gum'a incites readers of al-Ahram, the
Egyptian government daily, against "the true and hideous
face of the blood-suckers . . . who prepare [Passover]
matzos from human blood"?

The pope gives offense and the Mujaheddin al-Shura Council
in Iraq declares that it "will break up the cross, spill the
liquor and impose the 'jizya' [head] tax; then the only
thing acceptable is conversion or the sword." This to
protest the accusation that Islam might be spread by the
sword.

As I said. No sense of irony.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Anaphylaxis: A Medical Emergency
PART 6 of 11

Essentially, anaphylaxis can cause a dangerous drop in
blood pressure, and decrease blood flow in the body,
especially to the brain, heart, and lungs. Symptoms
occur within minutes to two hours after contact with
the allergy-causing substance, but in rare instances
may occur up to four hours later. Anaphylactic
reactions can be mild to life-threatening. Near the
end, I will mention another type of reaction that can
be mistaken for an anaphylactic reaction. It is called
a vasovagal reaction.

How does your body protect you? The immune system
normally responds to harmful substances such as
bacteria, viruses and toxins by producing symptoms such
as runny nose and congestion, post-nasal drip and sore
throat, and itchy ears and eyes. This is an
inflammatory effort to wash away the toxins that have
been created. An allergic reaction can produce the same
symptoms in response to substances that are generally
harmless, like dust, dander or pollen. The sensitive
immune system produces antibodies to these allergens,
which cause chemicals called histamines to be released
into the bloodstream. These often cause itching,
swelling of affected tissues, mucus production, hives,
rashes, and other symptoms. Symptoms vary in severity
from person to person, and from exposure to exposure.

What are common causes of anaphylaxis? What could
“give” you an anaphylactic reaction?

Many, many people are affected by foods. If you have
any allergies, get in the habit of reading all labels,
all the time. Prepare your meals from “scratch”. Strict
avoidance of the allergen is necessary to avoid a
severe reaction. Ask questions about ingredients and
preparation methods when eating out. The Food Allergy &
Anaphylaxis Network

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

-----------------------END DISCLAIMER

So what do you think about today's article?

My opinion is he is right. Where is the backlash within the
Muslim community? Why are they permitting this 10% to make
life hard on the rest of the 90%?

The entire world is calling for the Muslim community to
stand up and stop this death and destruction created by the
few within it. Failing to do so makes the entire community
complicit in the event. That's right. Failure to put a stop
to the activities makes you a part of the problem in any
situation, not just this one. That means all of us. We all
have to stop the confrontation.

Yet who has the greatest opportunity to reach the Muslim
world if not a Muslim? The clerics who insist on calling the
west infidels, who insist on instigating war with Israel,
and with the U.S. are largely those who have never cracked a
book. They seem to come out of the hills and are revered
because they say a few wise words. Yet, if these know not
the law "As ye sow, so shall ye reap.", and teach it, then
they are false prophets seeking power exclusively unto
themselves. They are not doing the work of their "God".

The only conclusion I can come to is that these people must
love to create death and destruction. They do so against all
known religions and emphatically against what anyone
considers to be "God". Those who stand by and let it happen
are complicit in the affair and must accept responsibility
therefor.

I speak this way because I know there are Muslims in North
America who likewise are emotionally ready to attack. They
don't want to see reason, negotiation, peaceful working
together as a way of life. They seem to want power and are
more than willing to attempt to have power by means of a
gun. This kind of ignorance has to be stopped. The only
result from that kind of thinking is pain, terror, death.
Is that what you really want? If so you have clearly been
shown how easy it is to get it.

If, however, you want peace - then it begins with you, your
children, your family, your community and it is you who must
begin. Bear in mind that real peace only begins with the
absence of war. It is something that must be learned and
comes from people who willingly do all they can to avoid
war. It comes from those who are peaceful at heart and who
promote peace wherever they are, who do not permit nor
participate in talks that advocate violence.

Peace and prosperity can be yours right where you are. That
is what the story The Saga of Pinehill is about, a blueprint
for you to follow. If you want peace and prosperity within
your own life then get the two books now in print. Read and

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Jeep: Why is a "jeep" called that?

The first quarter-ton reconnaissance cars delivered to the
Army had painted on their sides the letters "G. P" which
stood for "General Purpose". "G. P." when said quickly
became "jeep". the utterance of a character in the "Popeye"
comic strip of Elzie Crisler Segar. "Eugene the Jeep" who
confines himself to saying "Jeep, jeep, jeep" may have helped
popularize the word.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

There was an Irishman, an Englishman and Claudia Schiffer
sitting together in a carriage in a train going through
Tasmania.

Suddenly the train went through a tunnel and as it was an
old style train, there were no lights in the carriages and
it went completely dark.

Then there was this kissing noise and the sound of a really
loud slap.

When the train came out of the tunnel, Claudia Schiffer and
the Irishman were sitting as if nothing had happened and the
Englishman had his hand against his face as he had been
slapped there.

The Englishman was thinking: 'The Irish fella must have
kissed Claudia Schiffer and she missed him and slapped me
instead.'

Claudia Schiffer was thinking: 'The English fella must have
tried to kiss me and actually kissed the Irishman and got
slapped for it.'

And the Irishman was thinking: 'This is great. The next time
the train goes through a tunnel I'll make another kissing
noise and slap that English bastard again.
